Also, as I often like to do when someone is aghast that I might spend $8 on a pound of imported pasta, factor in the cost per serving and compare that to what I pay in restaurants. Certainly, that $8/lb. doesn't seem all that bad.

I get this reaction sometimes to buying Rancho Gordo beans at $6-8/lb -- but we probably get ten servings out of each bag! And they're really good enough to eat with just olive oil and onion, unlike the $2 beans from the store.

For anyone still needing yeast, Supermarket Italy has SAF red and gold in stock, limit three pounds per variety.  I was not running out but I'll sleep better with an extra pound in the bedroom.

Would you generally recommend them as a shopping source? I have been curious but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

My CSA transitioned from “pantry share” to “summer share” this week. Here is this week’s box: curly kale, strawberries, baby bok choy, sweet potatoes, garlic chives, radishes, Napa cabbage, meculin mix, chicory, and scallions

Yes, I recommend Supermarket Italy.  Worst I can say I buy more than I should in order to get the discount.

For the benefit of any Canadian peeps, when I was in Sobeys last night they'd clearly gone outside their normal channels to fill up the flour section....most of it was packed with bags of 00 flour (sorry, I don't remember the brand).

If anyone's been meaning to grab some, it might be a good time to do so.

Sooo jealous of the rhubarb! That is one thing I have tried to get on three different orders, and at the Union Square market, but to no avail. Might have to splurge on a delivery from BPM.

Our summer CSA pickups started this as well -- we are doing a market style CSA out in Concord. Very heavy on leafy things, of course; I grabbed mizuna, bok choy, arugula, and Yukina savoy, which is spinach-adjacent; they also had lettuces. Also grabbed a bag of baby kale by accident — figured if I touched it, I had to take it, under the circumstances!

But they had green garlic (one of my faves!), hakurei turnips, and the cutest baby daikons, which I loaded up on for some easy pickling. U-Pick was strawberries and sugar snap peas.

I was doing a little rearranging of closet space in order to make more room in the apartment for current needs, moving stuff downstairs to my storage cage, when I came across a box that I'd put there years ago.

In said box, a set of 3 wooden bowls ( yeah, I know this is only two of them), might've been my grandmother's. I oiled them last night...they're gorgeous and have a million chop marks from making, no doubt, chopped liver, egg salad and other weird chopped things. And today for lunch, I made endive alla Romana for the 2 of us. Perfect size, and well - just perfect.

Oh it's down there in the with the 3rd bowl, and they're coming up after my next trip down.

But - it's not called a mezzaluna - it's called a hockmesser. Looks like this...

I grudgingly went back down to my storage locker this morning, to bring some stuff down and to find these...

It needs some TLC, which it will get this afternoon, and then it will look like the 2 on the right.

Visiting my son and DIL in Metuchen NJ.  H Mart had beautiful sushi grade fish (anchovies are from Whole Foods).

Those H Marts are just great - can't wait till I can go to one again.

I was excited to see an HMart open near my new apt (we get most of fish and shopping at the one in KTown), but it was really disappointing when we were there a few months ago. Almost no fish selection and the veggie section is a lot smaller. Seems like they're focusing on snacks and packaged stuff...

Our first Hmart just opened last week!   My first reconnoiter I bought a small to-go sashimi tuna, tobiko and ikura.  Some Japanese beer left with me.  It was all very good to my tastes.  Since it was a soft opening, stocking was still in progress and I believe they were inundated the first couple days.   The food court has a Parisian named bakery, lunch plates, noodles and chicken.  I was hoping to snag some fried chicken but I was there too early.   I'll be back.

Mine is pretty good. The fishmongers are nice to work with. They actually notice me patiently waiting and my broken Spanish helps connect. No weekend sample ,ladies though as opposed to 99Ranch or my smaller Korean market. May be a wait till all opens up again.

That Parisian name bakery is actually a Korean chain.
