In Germany the big xmas celebration day is always 12/24 and so we had Beef Bourguignon (with a nice sauce made from salt pork, beef scraps, flour, bottle of red wine, gelatin, tomato paste, anchovy paste, onions, carrots, garlic head, dried porcini mushrooms, parsley and thyme sprigs and bay leaves cooked for 3.5 hours in the oven before strained) and finished with cremini mushrooms and pearl onions. Served with braised red cabbage (made with cloves, red wine vinegar and red currant jelly) and homemade spaetzle

We had ours yesterday. Growing up I never had turkey for holiday meals because nobody in my family especially cares for it, but in my GF's clan it's the inevitable centerpiece of *every* holiday meal. So turkey with roasted sweet potatoes and parsnips, steamed broccoli and broccolini, braised red cabbage, carrots, scalloped potatoes (my GF's special request rather than the usual mashed) and Brussels sprouts cooked low and slow with onion until everything was caramelized.

 

Oh, and dressing and copious quantities of gravy, of course.

 

Dessert was choice of cookies or an apple strudel I'd made of apples from our excursion to the U-pick a few months ago. On impulse I grabbed a raspberry from the fridge, plopped it on one end of the strudel, and told the grandkids "Look! It's 'Strudolph'!"

Well, since it was just two of us, ended up just doing a meze for dinner instead of the ribeye I bought (tomorrow). 
Halloumi, hummus, olives and bar nuts. With Champagne 🍾.

The Instant Pot gods smiled on me today.

 

Oxtails came out fall-off-bone-tender.  

 

Mi esposo made his mashed potatoes on the dry side so they'd soak up the sauce.

It was just Carlos and me for dinner so I made a very small tourtière. Despite the fact that I hate to make pie crust and it fights me every step of the way into the pie plate, it turned out nice and flaky and the pie was great. I used @Ann_T's recipe for the most part. Thank you, Ann.

I served it with mushroom gravy, avocado, and a simple baked tomato recipe from Julia Child that I have made for years.

@Tropicalsenioryou should be very proud of your pie. It even looks tender/flaky.  Is that tomato Julie’s “Provençal “ recipe…stuffed with breadcrumbs, Parmesan, olive oil and parsley then baked.  If so, great choice…that is also my go to recipe.

It sure is. I don't know how long ago she first showed it but that's how long I've been making it. For a quick easy side, it can't be beat.

Farfalle with roasted cauliflower (at high heat in the oven to get a nice golden/brown surface), walnuts, parmesan and a garlic sauce (made by roasting two garlic heads at high heat in the oven and mixing it afterwards with olive oil and lemon juice)

I am with you on the cauliflower high heat roast but I've always done whole garlic heads - low & slow. Perhaps a lingering notion of burnt bitter garlic. Did you wrap them in foil or just set on sheet pan?

We returned from a nice, almost two-week vacation trip to Florence and Paris, on the night before Christmas Eve. Yesterday, I spent the day cooking, as I was jonesing for some Florentine-ish food. But can two people really eat as two people in Florence might?

 

Here's an appetizer of beans on crostini, as served in Florence (yes, everything they say about the bread in Tuscany is true - it's devoid of pretty much everything, but the food is generally heavy on the salt to make up for its lack in said bread).

Served with good olive oil (a full bottle is placed on your table, along with a pepper grinder; add to your liking), it's basically enough for a light dinner. Of course it's followed by a primi, a secondi, cheese, dessert, and good luck getting back to your airbnb.

 

My version, with Rancho Gordo's Tarbais beans (and Jean-Georges's olive oil):

I whipped up (in 3 hours) a really tasty ragu, so our primi was...

Fusilli with said ragu. This is a 2 oz. portion. Significant Eater declined her secondi (well, I did too), which was a lovely roast chicken along with some roasted root veg - they won't go to waste.

@Ann_T Oh your cooking is just amazing.  The Christmas Eve halibut and crab and the prime rib and yorkies!  YUM.

Covid is still with me.  Cough didn't keep me up all night last night so there is improvement.  Soooooooo freaking tired.  Ronnie is better.  I have 2 covid tests left...he is supposed to be at an important meeting on Wednesday so I'm saving them for him to take tomorrow.  Hopefully he is negative.  Anyway, I have shoved myself into cooking a bit.  I mean, it's Christmas.  And I can nap most of the day lol.

 

My taste buds are pretty dull-can taste a bit, but anything spicy sounds good so Asian cabbage salad, Mac and cheese, spinach and hot hot hot wings.

My plans were to go to town last Wednesday and pick up a few things that I needed--a few gifts plus stuff from the store but Mr. Covid stopped that from happening.  So, I pivoted and ordered some shucked oysters.  We both really wanted an oyster/scallop/clam chowder type thing for Christmas Eve.  Would have been cheaper if I could have gone to the store but I'm thankful for being able to order online for sure!

Was supposed to have Ronnie's kids over for brunch on Christmas Eve day...I ordered some cookies-don't judge.  My plan was to supplement with some homemade but that didn't happen.  I was happy that we have these to munch on.  Made it feel more like Christmas.

I did rally and make homemade cinnamon rolls.  We've both been wanting these for a long time.  They didn't disappoint.

Christmas morning I took a shower (I know, I know, a stunning feat lol) and we delivered the few gifts that needed to be given.  Distanced, of course.  We left them on peoples porches.  After that I made a little brunch of sausage, cheese and jalapeño kolaches, scrambled eggs and mimosas

Then a loooooong nap happened.  Got up about 3.  Took the little prime rib that I thawed and salted a few days ago out of the fridge to warm up a bit.

Have to show the perspective.  Mom brought me this cast iron last time she was here.  Still perfectly seasoned. Used to be my grandparents.  The perfect size for us.
