Red Beans and Rice in the crockpot for tonight; smells great, just have to put the rice in the Zo rice cooker.

Thought about black-eyed peas but decided against it for today.

Nice- I love Richebourgs but I'm not sure I know that particular Gros.... We love Anne Gros (as opposed to Anne F Gros).

What's a Bryan Flannery steak?

Bryan Flannery is an online butcher based in CA with prime aged meat. When I opened this steak from the shrink wrap it had a very subtle cheesy smell of aged meat. Bryan Flannery

Having resolved to clear the overstocked pantry and freezer…Thanksgiving leftovers (fresh roasted sprouts) and Stove Top cornbread stuffing. Of course I made a huge amount of mushroom barley soup today, so no net gain in freezer space😆.

Not able to grab the dim sum take out we'd hankered for for several days, i.e., long lines, early closures, a kitchen wok of strip steak, broccoli, mushroom, onion.    Not like your Amah made, but probably better than mine might have.

On the first day of 2013, (note the bad luck number 13) I decided it was time to stop following moms New Year meal which always included black eyed peas for luck and served Shrimp cocktail instead.  The first thing the next day as I was taking out the trash, I fell on a patch of ice and broke every bone in my ankle.  They kept me on pain killers at the hospital for three days before the surgeon could get to me. The first thing i saw on facebook this morning was a note from them and a picture showing that very dinner of nine years ago. I've been reluctant to quit including those ingredient since then but because it is really hard to find decent ham hocks any more, and because Charlie is getting tired of plain old black eyed peas, I decided to find another way to use the traditional ingredients in my Mom's Southern New Year day dinner. I deleted ham hock and collard greens and substituted pork sausage and spinach in a soup. I used corn chips for corn bread and then made some corn bread any way. I made black eyed peas and cheese into dip for the corn chips instead of cooking them with the ham and collard greens. The rest of the stuff was just added to round out the meal a little more.  The shrimp is a recipe that got made because @Steve Irby and @Kim Shook recently endorsed it so I wanted to try it.  There was a pineapple and mango salsa  that I forgot to put on the table until after I took these pictures.  Charlie invited a couple friends over and we all had a good time.

@Norm MatthewsYour deviled eggs are always so pretty.

I, too, decided not to do the traditional BEPs with ham--but I CERTAINLY was NOT going to skip them.

Thank you Rancho Gordo for the SUPER LUCKY peas

Black eyed peas, Carolina gold rice, and roasted cabbage. (There was a bit of duck leg meat I threw on top of the plates before serving).

The night before, I had a ton of leftover giant rib eye (including bones). So...

The soupy party of Uzbek lagman; goes into bowls with cooked pasta. Many recipes exist; I make mine a little differently than this one to be sure, but it's a nice baseline. Some are made with lamb, and I'm sure goat has been used.
