As whether was finally getting colder, we got a sort of heatwave (at least it's still much better than the summer weather).

Soba. Walnut dipping sauce (walnut, miso, vinegar, a touch of sugar). Sesame paste dipping sauce (with soy sauce, miso, mirin). Reduced soy dipping sauce (soy sauce, miso, vinegar, mirin). Scallions. Wassabi (we needed much more than shown in the picture).

It's a nice light make-ahead meal.

This morning, I continued my pizza efforts with this Pizzetta Bianca from Polpo

IMG_9268.thumb.jpg.08be5ede6a7d381753ea45489e0c0c7b.jpg

I thought the pizzette would go well with the Harissa and Manchego Omelette from Ottolenghi's new book, Simple but I ate most of it while I caramelized the onions for the omelet.

This is a 2 egg version (the recipe calls for 3 eggs/serving), cooked in a 6 1/2 inch cast iron skillet.

I like the flavors of the harissa, caramelized onion, cheese and cilantro but can't help thinking that I might prefer this as a conventional omelet or maybe turned into a frittata with potatoes.

Egg salad on little toasts

IMG_9287.thumb.jpg.e5aa61f3e565fb8f0ee71f3d082bd375.jpg

This particular loaf of bread had big holes throughout so I used a judicious layer of speck so the egg salad didn't fall through. Very successful and tasty, too!

Our usual breakfast includes a form of caffeinated beverage, and a form of bread.

Today it's: Triple-shot Ruta Maya medium roast 10-oz latte for my wife, and a triple-shot Ethiopia Werka light roast 5oz Cappuccino pour moi (across the table).

For the bread: freshly baked CSO demi-baguettes, with salted butter and Bonne Maman raspberry jam.

I should have taken a picture. A slice of King Arthur multi-grain toast, spread with peanut butter, topped with a sliced banana. If it's good enough for Elvis, it's good enough for me. Although I stop short of grilling mine, as one would grill a grilled cheese.

When I was about 7 years old living in Colorado, after a long morning of running around the side of a mountain playing with my friend, his mom made us grilled PBJ sandwiches.  She used the grilled cheese maker--you know what I'm talking about.  Kind of looked like a small panini maker except for no grooves inside.  Black with hunter orange accents and folded like a triangle I think?  Anyway, I had never fathomed such a wonderful delicacy existed.  When I bit into that warm, creamy, sweet sandwich, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.  Mom says I talked about it for weeks.  Must have been memorable since I'm 44 now and still talking about it lol.

I skipped the bread and put a blob of peanut butter directly on a banana this morning. It’s a classic.

Beans, fried egg, ham.  Parsley is from the neighbor’s garden.  It is amazing how intensely flavored fresh parsley can be.

Leftover ham and cheese quiche and home fries with onions. The fresh salsa was intended to go with the home fries, but I quickly discovered it went swimmingly with the quiche as well.
