@Kim Shook, I am inspired by your 'tater and have resolved to make extra baked potatoes and yams next time I am cooking them. I think some topped potatoes will be in future lunch plans.

Lunch in north Germany. I mean I'm here in a small rural town in northern Germany at the moment. The town is known for several things: smoked eel (and ham), plant nurseries, and spa.

There are many regional Mettwurst in Germany and I like them all.

Chewy rye bread. Northern Germany, the Baltic countries and Scandinavia do all things rye so well.

Yesterday was Ascension and most of the country was shut down, also in Bad Zwischenahn. The tourist shops were open but only the main tourist drag. The vast majority of tourists in this town are elderly people who come for the spa and the lake. Very few international tourists come here. I had a beer at the town's most famous eel smoker where I also picked up a couple of things for lunch today.

It's a restaurant and shop in one selling their own smoked fish.

I have never seen so many smoked eels in one place.

I bought one of these. The smallest one, about 16 euros.

They also sell local Schnapps. Smoked eel and Schnapp go hand in hand here. Drinking rhymes in local dialect printed on the label.

Indeed.   Also, he's such a lovely man.    The kindest and gentlest.   (Except that knowing our regular orders in advance, he greets us and says "An extra spicy turkey dog for Madame, and a Polish, no spice, for my brother, the wimp." guffaws at his own humor and gets to work.)

This is from America's Test Kitchen recipe Super tasty Red Curry + Coconut Milk + Shrimp + Veg / Pineapple + Peanuts + Bulgarian Carrot..   It has the right amount of sugar (some brown sugar) and fat (Coconut fat) to be REALLY GOOD!

We made a  lot more than is pictured here, there's now a note to make more rice to go with this recipe!

I wrote on the dinner thread about going down to NC for a good, but sad visit to see my grandmother.  She is in hospice, so it is likely to be the last time to see her.  I also made all my old rounds – went by the house and took pictures, drove all over the place, went by her church.  And I ate at our two favorite spots – the BBQ place that my mom and I both grew up going to on visits with my grandparents and I had lunch at the Sanitary Café.  I’ve written about this place before.  It is just an ordinary southern meat and threes café.  But the food is made with care and reminds me of how my grandmother used to cook.  She loved this place and in recent years when she didn’t want to go out to eat any more, she would send me there to bring back her favorites.

Pintos, green beans, salmon cakes and creamed corn.  Everything was delicious.  The green beans are canned, but I’m almost positive that they are home-canned.  The texture is just perfect – a little firmness left.  Commercially canned beans are a little mushy when cooked long enough to get all the flavor through them.  Nowadays when I make salmon cakes, I do it from this recipe that @suzilightning sent me.  These were certainly from canned salmon, but that’s what I grew up with, so that’s fine with me.  Their wonderful squiggly hush puppies:

@Kim Shook. I agree with @Margaret Pilgrim.  That is the best photo I have seen of a baked potato.

I had some Gruyere cheese leftover from last week when  I made the French Onion soup so I used it to make

Fondue for Moe and I to share.    Served with fresh baguette baked this morning.

Cheese and noodle soup, and an oatmeal-apple colada drink, then...

A beef cutlet in green marinade, with golden lentil and pork belly gravy, rice, a fried plantain, and quick lime-pickled tomato.

This little restaurant, which has six communal tables that seat a total of about 15 people, is properly called "El Rincón del Buffalo" but absolutely nobody who eats there with any frequency calls it that. It's run by an incredibly sweet little old lady who remembers every regular by name and calls anyone she doesn't know yet "neighbour." All of her regulars call her Grandma, and by extension, the restaurant is actually called "Grandma's Place."

Simple lunches. Regional ham and farmer-style brawn.

Last half of the exquisite smoked eel.

Honey with sea buckthorn. Ham is sea air-dried from an island nearby. Cheese is from south of Germany. Northern cheeses from around here are mostly like the Dutch stuff which I scoff at.

"Kutterbrot" is a typical north German light meal. "Kutter" is a type of small fishing boat.

Every day after many hours of walking round the island I had some pastry and beer. No "Kaffee und kuchen" for me.

L9yWSlL.jpg

They ran out of poppy seed coils/snails so I got "French Kuchen". Cinnamon ruins everything. (Beer is oatmeal stout)

sARFAAx.jpg

If you put poppy seeds in something I dislike, such as cakes and pastry, I'd probably eat it. I had to scrape off the crumbly bits on top.

CksLnt9.jpg

3 different kinds of poppy seed filled cakes. Beer is imperial tiramisu stout I brought from home.

Simple Black Forest ham and Finlandia lacey swiss on toasted(but not too dark) swirled rye with the last of Sir Kensington mustard and some Miracle Whip ... and some Mr. Ron's coleslaw between the meat and cheese.  Could eat only half of the sandwich, though.

I have (over my 65 years) decided what taste I like so I do tend to eat specific things....

Pork tamale from Laney Flea Market, Oakland.     Doused with fiery red salsa, mild green salsa, Salvadorian crema.    $2.50

Add $2.00 for an horchata.     This really should be under Sunday breakfasts.
