Another lunch, same eaters.

The venue is the Black Hill Hotel, where the new owners were rapt in Mums stories of the pub from eighty years ago (she wasn't an underage drinker, rather friends with the publicans daughter).

The meal was beer battered flathead for me, salmon for mama.

The best meal I've had in Ballarat for a looong time.

My honorary lady is a friend called Marc. The venue is in Victoria St Richmond (little Saigon) in Melbourne.

They only do pho. We both chickened out and had the shredded chicken, minus the giblets, liver and hearts.

I lied, they do spring rolls as well.

Today Kerry Beal and I found ourselves taking care of errands all too close to our very favourite Ramen house, Kenzo in Mississauga.

image.jpeg.bd719cad74527d5f7538f0d1e644fa82.jpeg

We shared some delicious takoyaki.

Kerry stuck with her favourite King Shoyu Ramen.

And I had the Black Tonkotsu Ramen.

We had brunch on Mother’s Day at Spoonbread Bistro in Richmond.  1st Course:

DSCN6963.JPG.8df2eef8c57ad25f9e1b82257bb3ef64.JPG

This was mine – Short Rib Bruschetta w/ poached egg and Mornay sauce topped with tomato fondue on a baguette.  This was remarkable.  Incredibly tender – the sauce was perfect and those bits of parsley were FRIED!  The egg was perfect for me:

DSCN6965.thumb.JPG.c86ac399b9036c2e98b0e3ef01ebc51a.JPG

I was sad to see it gone:

DSCN6967.thumb.JPG.4508267e60634e136dd366c7bc08553a.JPG

:P

Mr. Kim had the Flash Grilled Sea Scallop with Lobster Avocado Mousse and Tomato Vinaigrette:

DSCN6964.JPG.488a5da57fa62fecb7f6b415f7556141.JPG

Very good.  But the best dish on the table all afternoon was what my mother and  Jessica had:

DSCN6966.JPG.d6847d8783fdff975bf733f9f074889c.JPG

Crab Cake Napoleon w/ Fried Green Tomatoes and Lobster Hollandaise.  The crabcakes were amazingly sweet.  No bread filler at ALL – they only use scallop mousse to hold it together.  And the tomatoes were the best I’ve ever had.

My main course:

DSCN6968.JPG.f62d2da8b68027e5c015e06b41b4d7c7.JPG

Scallop, Leek and Bacon Deep Dish Quiche with Potatoes Anna.  Very good – but unfortunately not served hot.  The entire plate was just below room temperature.  I didn’t send it back because I was full and after a couple of bites I was ready to have it packed up anyway.  I did let the server know, though.

Momma had the Steak and Crab – marinated and seared beef tenderloin topped with blue Lump Crab sauce in Port Demi Glace and Meyers Lemon Hollandaise with Potatoes and Brussels sprouts:

DSCN6969.JPG.d94efda05530d220bd06bdec470062c0.JPG

Fabulous.  The potatoes look so ordinary, but they were so flavorful – a really deep, full potato-y taste.

Jessica had the Chicken Waffle with country fried chicken, Belgian waffle, fried egg, Applewood smoked bacon and topped with country style sausage gravy:

DSCN6970.JPG.800dc186d3e358a03dd3465b0f749c2a.JPG

Really good (especially that chicken), but enormous.

Mr. Kim got the Mimosa Sea Bass seared in Orange Zest and Champagne with the same great potatoes as Momma got and asparagus:

DSCN6971.JPG.66a60b2293a4d3649fcc1754acfe48ee.JPG

Wonderful fish – and the sauce was fantastic.

I only got a picture of one dessert – we got 3 of them packed up to take home – a lemon chess pie w/ pecan brittle and lemon zest cream, a bourbon bread pudding and for Momma, the “chocolate destruction”.  Jessica ordered the same thing and very nicely shared a few bites with us:

DSCN6972.JPG.e262721e794a3017f66c87905a53c715.JPG

Chocolate cake with coconut walnuts and white chocolate topped with a 7 layer cookie, salted caramel and butterscotch.

Saturday lunch at Carytown Burger & Fries:

This Sunday after church we had brunch at the Bosna Market & Deli. This business has a special place in my heart, not just for the wonderful things they sell in the market and the good food they serve, but for the sign on the door that reads: "Attention! If you are hungry and don’t have money, we will give you free lunch and you can pay us back whenever you can, if you want. We believe that in the 21st century no one should be hungry!” Mr. Kim had the meat burek and I had the gyro:

Today Kerry took me out for a birthday lunch.   I chose the restaurant:  Miso Sushi & Tapas  on the Lakeshore in Oakville.

We shared a variety of dishes.  Kerry drank green tea and I had some hot sake.  They had a sake list the likes of which I have never seen in my life and their bar seemed pretty well stocked too.

image.jpeg.c01f9b179832b5a1cf8482b8b93b24bf.jpeg

Miso Calamari.  Whole squid half deep fried, half grilled.

image.jpeg.df90c9f07c6c48eb8680896ea568d718.jpeg

Mushroom butter Yaki:  an assortment of mushrooms sautéed in butter.

image.jpeg.564ea272658179a72ea73a9f0482b34c.jpeg

Pork Rib Kakuni: slow braised  (24 hour)  pork rib with a kick of spicy Japanese mustard.

image.jpeg.9503098fd10e630a3579c92d1afcdd80.jpeg

Yam Tempura:  deep fried sweet potato tempura roll.

image.jpeg.ce6e798f0e60e8d5cf57560add88eecf.jpeg

Double Shrimp Rock Roll:. Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, with "rock" sauce topped with Shrimp Rock. (normally has crab in it but we asked them to leave it out).

Happy Birthday.  That looks so amazing that I might be tempted to add another year to my already advanced age just to celebrate an extra birthday with that meal.

Today Kerry had business to take care of in Toronto so we dropped into a favourite eatery for lunch.  Pho Phuong on Dundas Street serves bahn xeo (savoury fried pancake), a favourite of both of us. As  is our wont these days, we shared a slection of appetizers.

Today Kerry and I headed out to Brampton to take care of some business and on our way back we decided to have lunch at Bamiyan.  This is an Afghani kabob cafe and I was sure I had posted about it before. A search however brings up nothing.

I had the lamb chop dinner.

The lamb was delicious but the bread was quite disappointing.

It appeared to have a pizza type crust - not the soft nature a naan should be!
