Dinner 2018

I have two pints of whipping cream left over from Thanksgiving.  No one felt like making whipped cream for the pies and my MIL brought some canned stuff.  Anyway, there was a discussion elsewhere on eG about @andiesenji's  cream biscuits.  Decided to make them:

They were incredibly easy and very tasty, but I think that I undercooked them a bit – a couple of them tasted of flour.

In the midst of trying to use down the freezers.  Found a big chuck roast and made Trashy Pot Roast in the slow cooker:

With leftover Sour Cream/Cheddar potatoes and green beans:

A local market (Better Valu) had salami grinders on sale for $3.99 yesterday, and I put them on the menu for dinner. Not as good as homemade, but it filled the void. Deb is picking up KFC tonight, so I get two days off in a row!

Simmered hijiki seaweed with carrots, aburaage  and snow peas. More of the chicken leg ballotine from last evening.

This was my first time cooking with the seaweed and I couldn’t not share this photograph with you of how it looked when I poured it from the package into the bowl:

That is...striking. I can't decide whether it looks like some gorgeous sunflower sculpture or a pile of pollywogs wiggling frantically away from where they were dropped.

Cheat dinner since I was cleaning after a week of hosting Angie, our friend Mike's rescue dog.

Coupon bought Well Yes! tomato carrot bisque soup with dollar store buttery crackers, Miracle Whip and lacey swiss.  Lots of white pepper and some basil.  Not my favorite but a good dinner after a big chef's salad for lunch.

Nothing is better than frying in lard.

Nothing.  Do not quote me on this.

Your dinner photo gave me a craving so I made similar for dinner tonight, though my crappy smartphone pic doesn't do it justice. Not as nice looking as your ham, but it was still tasty! And I don't know why the potatoes look so strangely orange in the picture. Or why the mustard looks so menacing. :o:laugh:

Curried Sweet Potato and Leek Pie and Green Salad with Green Dressing,  both from Shaya

fullsizeoutput_389c.thumb.jpeg.68b23fbd760ad0b5ff063f2ac0df790b.jpeg

The "curry" in the pie comes from the Hawaij spice mixture, also in the book and I modified the pie to use a polenta crust instead of regular pastry.

The salad is amazingly green from a dressing that's almost entirely herbs - parsley, dill and cilantro - blanched and puréed with a little yogurt, avocado oil, vinegar, garlic

I "liked" this even if the "schnitzel" looks unbreaded.

That’s how DH likes it.  He lived in Germany for a couple of years.  Schnitzel with mushroom sauce “Jagerschnitzel” is usually not breaded.  I will call a thin pork cutlet just to get a like from you 😍.

yellow foot mushrooms were delicious.  Sometimes Whole Foods carries real wild mushrooms.

Seriously I am hungering for some mushrooms.  I wonder what amazon prime now will deliver from the local Whole Foods?

Cleaning the refrigerator, primordial meats and vegetables, at least I think that's what they were.  Nuked to oblivion.  Pretty sure there was turkey and what once was steak.  By nuked I mean super steamed in the CSO, I do not own a microwave.  No neutrinos were harmed in these experiments.

Sirloin steak, cooked SV then seared.  Served with cauliflower in butter (cooked ALV), celery and carrot sticks (since there's no lettuce back in the stores yet) and a glass of Lodi Zin.

I was measuring Cherenkov radiation in college, just not for culinary applications.  (Though I did churn ice cream in the same facility.)

Neither of us have finished our steaks in recent steak dinners, so when I spotted these two little Angus chuck eye steak beauties, I jumped right in. I selected two smaller potatoes for bakers and added a few sugar snaps, just in case we came up short. It was just about the perfect meal for the both of us!
