I don’t usually comment so much on the restaurants we visit as I’ve said from the beginning we are not reviewing them. But really this one was off the mark in terms of price versus quality and I couldn’t stay quiet.

I quite enjoy, dare I say even prefer the bonus commentary!  (and I would venture to say that I am not alone in that!! 😊)

As a longtime retailer turned chef, there are few things in this world that irritate me more than poor, negligent customer service. In retail stores, after being ignored at the cash for a while by gossipping staffers, I've been known to call out in a loud voice (and bear in mind, I sold hearing aid batteries for years):

"I'LL JUST RING THIS IN FOR MYSELF THEN, SHALL I?"

After two weeks of somewhat unsatisfactory lunches we find ourselves in the vicinity of a place that we knew we could trust, Lemongrass.

Ginger tea for Kerry and a glass of Pinot Grigio for me.

I was trying to hide behind my wrap and hold it up as a backdrop for the photograph. Apparently I was just too slow.

There was no calamari on the menu but both of us exclaimed at the beauty of these salad rolls.

For Kerry crispy duck with peanut sauce.

For me crispy chicken breast with Thai curry sauce.

We each sampled the other’s entrée.

No loud music. Swift and pleasant service. Tasty food. Sometimes you win!

Best lunch I can remember in forever. Well almost forever.

@Kerry Beal And I found ourselves in Milton today to take care of an errand. We took the opportunity to return to The Grand Chalet also apparently known as Tony Spiducci’s.

I had a glass of a very nice Merlot. Kerry (the DD) stuck with water as usual.

The antipasto platter. Delicious.  Out of camera range was a basket of fresh bread and a saucer of oil and balsamic for dipping.

The lamb spiducci combination platter which we shared.

An additional 10 spiducci also shared.

a decent antipasto plate

is a gift from the gods.

Our local place does it very well. Some home made charcuterie, some savory accoutrements and pickled stuff,  cheese.

We are blessed

Yesterday Kerry and I returned to a favourite place, Salad Thai.

We both opted for just water to drink this time.  No photographs. You’d recognize it anywhere.

 We shared the following:

Crispy calamari. This was just incredibly tender.

 A very satisfactory lunch.

Those plates look very good!  Good photos.

Kerry operates the iPhone camera. I know you were discussing the food but I love the blue pattern plates.  They remind me very much of Royal Copenhagen tableware.

I am lunching with a bunch of ladies this week, but yesterday's experience was just ridiculous.  The woman I was going with wanted Indian or a local deli/grill.  I figured we could go to my favorite Indian restaurant.  We get there - CLOSED ON MONDAYS!  What!?!  Luckily, she knew of another place close by (there are A LOT of Indian restaurants in the area), so we headed there.  Ordered an appetizer of pakoras.  Nibbled on those while sipping on complementary ginger and lemon tea and BOOM - power goes out.  REALLY?!?  Waited a few minutes to see if it would come back, but there is construction nearby and it was the whole area down to the traffic lights.  Third time's the charm???  We ended up at the deli/grill for a tasty lunch and laughed at our misfortune.  Accidentally took a 1.5 hour lunch :D  But we had to eat!!  The universe just did not want us to get any Indian food for lunch, apparently.

An errand found @Kerry Beal and I in Markham yesterday.   This is pretty close to the hub of Asian culture outside of Toronto proper.  I had a place that I was hoping to visit but had not expected the chance to come up quite so soon.  Donburi offers some options that one doesn’t usually find in most of the Japanese restaurants we have visited.

Tea as usual for Kerry  and warm sake for me.  A misunderstanding explains the two ochoko (cups).

We were each given a bowl of miso soup.

 We shared four  skewers:

Beef gyuu donburi For me. I opted for an onsen egg.  Clearly the egg is fried!

(As an aside I was pleased to learn that my own rendition of beef gyudon  was pretty close to this.)

Today was treat.... my oldest daughter and I went out to lunch while I was waiting for my car to get repaired. We headed to La Cantina in Hancock- just over the lift bridge from Houghton.  I hadn't been there since new owners took over, and oh my, what I've been missing!!!!

She had a rather magnificent ribeye steak, with rice, guac, lettuce, tomatoes, etc...and tortillas. Made little burrito-like things out of it.

I had a house speciality consisting of 4 different types of burritos- chicken, steak, ground beef, and I forgot the fourth one. No way could I finish it. I will be returning there very soon!  Stunning amount of food for the price. Excellent service from a jovial waiter too. Loved it.

The frost was definitely on the pumpkin this morning so it was time to return to our favourite cool weather restaurant, The Bombay Grill.

Im Sooooo jealous of the LL's lunch spots.

Sooooooooooooooo Jealous

I might have to take a large swig

directly out of the bottle of my new , but level-declining

fancy pants Whisky.

granted the LL's some times his a miss ..............

but on the other hand ..................

well to be honest , I can't imagine a better pair to

enjoy such delights.

But  ....

as far as I can tell

they do not have this beer in the GTA :

image-20120720020035.png.jpeg.3f06a3fd1790ca44d8f539c9583f9cdd.jpeg

see ?

of course this might not be the Indian Beer I remember

which I had at many Indian Joints in the GBT

thats the Greater Boston Area

but more or less Boston and Cambridge

if its the one I remember form Kabab & Curry  on Mass Ave

it has some nice fruity notes.

but Im pleased

more or less

that the LL's do so well

I do remember on the beer above some Hints of Apricots

as i grew up on a small Apricot Orchard

in LosAltos CA    ~ 2 acres

maybe that had something to do with it

  • 2 weeks later...

Lunch today was dictated by where we were and the current stage of @Kerry Beal‘s jet lag program. Nandos won.

We shared a chicken with a mango-lime sauce.

And an order of “chippers”.
