The chili bean sauce he mentioned in his recipe is doubanjiang

Yes, but the brands mentioned are Cantonese, not Sichuan style doubanjiang. They are different.

Could you (or anyone) say if either or both would be considered traditional for ma po tofu?

My bachelor neighbor just bought a smoker with BBQ. He smoked beef short ribs today, a first try, and shared some with us. I am usually the one feeding him!
I said a small piece as I already had stuff out for supper - stuffed chicken wings from the freezer.
The ribs were pretty good for a first attempt. Cooked up jasmine rice and Shanghai Bok Choy.

Both. The magic word “pixian” indicates quality Sichuanese doubanjiang.

Ronnie went fishing at a lake for the first time this spring.  Came home with some bass and drum.  Shishito peppers, Mac and cheese and collard greens from the garden to go with.

I had just enough red weapons in the fridge to make Vivian Howard's Where's My Medal Grits and Chicken--I know, you'd think they would have gone bad, but they weren't.  Topped with Herbdacious and asparagus from the garden on the side.

Matt said he would make homemade corn tortillas for dinner last night. So when I got home from work,

I roasted a couple of chicken breasts and while they were roasting put an enchilada sauce on to simmer.

Dinner was Chicken Enchiladas with a side of black beans for Moe and I and Matt made himself vegetarian tacos.

The thermometer jumped from yesterday’s 17 oC to 28 oC today with bright sunshine. Therefore we swapped pizza night for an early BBQ ...

Pork collar, pork belly wrapped around skewers, turkey ...

Oh ... and for @kayb - I am a man of my word (kind of, at least): A Somontano rosé, carbonated a la Methode @rotuts, then rounded off with a dash of passion fruit syrup. Very smooth, very easy to drink - my wife got happily toasted after drinking hers like lemonade 😉

I have been to Montes winery and did a tour and tasting. Beautiful vineyard and cellar. Colchagua Valley is a wine-drinker's paradise. I was there one April staying 4 or 5 days just to chill and drink wine. No other tourists staying overnight, probably because it was the southern autumn (low season) and harvest was done in March. The 4 tourists I saw during winery visits and tastings came from the capital with their private guides-drivers. Came all the way from Santiago to this stunning valley just for a couple of hours and had to hurry back, wow.

Happy Mother’s Day 🥳

I just bought that exact same passion fruit syrup.

I was thinking about using in in a rum based drink with lime juice.

The syrup is excellent (actually, the brand produces a lot of nice varieties). Rum or Bourbon plus the syrup plus something herbal/bitter makes a good basic cocktail. The syrup itself has a bit of tartness - not overly sour, as in substituting lime if you want to go in that direction, but in a pleasant way.

Lima beans with sage, butter, toasted sesame, caramelized onion, nutmeg.

an attempt at a high hydration, slow baked, volkornbrot/pumpernickel. A bit too high hydration I think.

Tuna Sashimi for dinner tonight.

That is beautiful!  I almost wish I could bring myself to taste raw fish.

Mother’s Day meal, definitely the best we’ve had this season. Nice size, great price, and my husband seasoned them perfectly.
