Lunch from a few days ago, mixed grilled vegetables. Served with tahini sauce and a couple of simple salads.

Purple potato salad made with lots of pickles, parsley and green onions from my garden, mayo.  Paired with iced green tea.

Jerusalem Artichoke Soup with Hazelnut & Spinach Pesto from Ottolenghi's NOPI.

Nothing difficult here although peeling those knobby sunchokes is rather tedious. The header notes mention an alternate garnish of pickled mushrooms.  I'd like to try that sometime but the bright green pesto is better for spring and we are having June gloom weather here so a warm soup was very appropriate.

Came in from church with nothing cooked, no lunch/dinner plans, and hungry enough to eat the house. Briefly contemplated stopping by somewhere to pick up something, decided that was ridiculous as I had two refrigerators and a pantry full of leftovers and to-be-prepared food. 

 

Came home and fixed myself a salad luncheon; cucumber salad, jail slaw, broccoli-cauliflower salad, and cottage cheese with peaches. Had the added advantage of clearing the leftover cucumbers and peaches from the fridge.

Was still ready to eat the house after that, so I snacked on some blackberry cobbler with ice cream (last of that), some Sugar Babies, and some Cheez-Its. I think I'm full, for the moment, though popcorn is sounding good.

Yesterday, on the move somewhere in southern Guangxi, China, we hit a part of the road lined with food carts, so stopped. As you do.

 

Turned out that we were outside a university campus and these folk were 99% catering to the students. Cheap and cheerful fodder. Here are just a few of the offerings:

凉粉 (Bean Jelly)                   
豆腐花 (Tofu Dessert)              
清补凉                        
凉拌粉 (Cold Dressed  Noodles)    
绿豆粥 (Mung Bean Porridge)
海带绿豆粥 (Seaweed and Mung Bean Porridge)
红豆黑米粥 (Adzuki bean and Black Rice Porridge)
香芋椰西米露 (Taro, Coconut Juice and Sago Drink)

Similar fare. Cold noodle dishes and a couple of porridges. He also suggests he can rustle you up some fried noodles (wheat or rice noodles) or fried rice.

More noodles and Fried Rice. He also offers fried potatoes. A few people were offering their versions of "French fries". None of them knew how to make fries. They looked awful and one guy was busy pouring cold oil over his selection which were 'cooking' on a hotplate.

Stir-fry central. Choose your ingredients and they'll fry 'em up. Pay by by number of ingredients chosen, I think.

His sign reads "Zhanjiang Oysters", Zhanjiang being a port city in the south-west of Guangdong. He is grilling and selling oysters. I never eat oysters from Zhanjiang. I've seen the water. And I never buy oysters from places like this. Anyway, I like my oysters au naturel. On the side of his cart he was also advertising Green Lip Mussels which might have tempted me, but he didn't have any.

 

There were also a few fruit stalls where we bought some stuff, but we passed on lunch. About a mile down the road, we found a small restaurant (with walls and a roof) where I had an excellent bowl of 火腿炒面 or 'ham fried noodles'. The ham was actually sausage, but a reasonably good one. I was happy and so was my mouth.

Chef salad with an experimental  lemon juice, prosecco vinegar, garlic, tarragon and caper vinaigrette dressing. Has promise, but needs a little more work.

Check out my high-end set-up: silver paper covered cardboard and clamps to hold it straight. The other side is an old binder. Or anything that can stand straight up, really.

My flash diffuser is a plastic cup... I positioned the camera like this so you could see everything (the reflectors and the food being shot).

For some reason, I wanted a tuna salad sandwich today. I have been trying various canned tuna lately. After having some great canned tuna in Italy, I have moved into the camp, that believes tuna packed in spring water is not a good idea.

Homemade burger with fried onions and bacon bits.  The bun was also home made  Top and side view.  It was delicious.  1000% better than the burger I had at the local pub last week.  Haven't had burgers in about a year!

I agree with you! And wanted to mention that Costco (are you a member?) here in Canada carries some really nice tuna in oil, which is a product of Italy and not just "Italian-style" as the Bumble Bee product states. I wish I could remember the brand name. If I have a chance to go there in the next couple of days, i will take a look. Not sure if the US stores would carry the same brand, of course. But it was sold as a package of four small tins. And it was really good!

I was making myself some sausage meat as a stuffing for vegetables when I was overcome by a sudden urge to chow down on some mini sausage rolls, so I took off my sausage hat, put on my pastry hat and away I went.

Peppered turkey and provolone.  I never used to like deli turkey until I tasted this one, from Food Lion, oddly enough!

 

I know! Food Lion is a low end grocer down here, and I shop there for the low prices, which even beat out WalMart (yuck) on market basket comparisons. They have a few things that are better than anything else I can find in town. The one that pops to mind are the petite frozen peas. They also carry regular peas like everyone else in town. I'm spoiled to the petite ones only they carry.

 

Nice looking turkey sandwich. Is the brand "Taste of Inspirations"? I love that brand of roast beef better than Boarhead, but haven't tried the peppered turkey.

Salad of leftover salmon from last night's dinner, chilled kale sautéed with onions (originally intended for inclusion in a frittata but something was very wrong with the eggs I picked up at the farmers market yesterday), and almonds for crunch
