Pork Egg Rolls with Mae Ploy Sweet Chilli Sauce

Thse egg rolls look plump and nicely fried. With that sauce I always feel the need to add a touch of vinegar. You?

@BonVivant - I don't know whether to thank you or curse you for those fabulous bread pictures! 😁

Tried a new place for lunch on Sunday - Bocata Arepa Bar.  Jessica had a carne asada arepa with cheese, and coleslaw:

And a cheese Capacha:

IMG_2753.jpg.c197e61af02888d1a0d1a438ce732aaf.jpg

A corn cake stuffed with and topped with 2 kinds of cheese.

Mr. Kim had the Pepito – a sub with steak, avocado, tomatoes, guasacaca cheese, something called Pink Sauce (ketchup and mayo), potato sticks and ham:

IMG_2754.jpg.5be7db05aea41a67c54b60da6f9d1e7e.jpg

It was a monster – that’s a very large dinner plate.

I had a shredded beef empanada and a chicken and cheese arepa:

IMG_2759.jpg.eb0cc8a3bd1b64ff596ea0cd67d67cf7.jpg

We shared a very large order of fries:

IMG_2755.jpg.62351cb93ba9edfb5c00cb03f730df01.jpg

Sauces – hot sauce and garlic sauce and one single packet of ketchup 😂:

IMG_2752.jpg.16a060e267808d06eed404f0635804ba.jpg

It was fine – we had plenty of ketchup at home, but we had to laugh.

For dessert the three of us shared a slice of tres leches:

IMG_2761.jpg.bb7633c266730f32a8ff90c4599e4452.jpg

Everything was so fresh tasting and delicious. Even better than the place that Mr. Kim and I ate at on Saturday and it is just around the corner from us instead of 20 minutes away across the river.

And an actual home made lunch from today:

Aldi Pane Torano bread, toasted with Dukes and tomatoes.

Oh, that looks so good!  I am waiting impatiently for my CSA to start having slicing tomatoes; so far it's just cherry/grape.  Sliced tomatoes on toast (the local sourdough bakery does a spinach and onion that is perfect for this) with mayo is a standard summer lunch/dinner/snack for me.

@Kim Shook  It all looks wonderful. I am no sweets fan but am now lusting after the Tres Leches and a cup of strong coffee

The great thing about REAL Tres Leches is that it isn't overly sweet.  The whipped cream on top was barely sweetened at all.

Ye that is what appeals to me about some Asian and sweets - just sweet enough  I realize we were discussing a Latin sweet.

Take away lunch from a restaurant that specializes in making their own tofu and soy products.

Karaage.

A sort of mala / mapo dofu, where they used soft tofu cubes along with scrambled pan fried firm tofu and tiny zucchini cubes. With Japanese style rice. Not ma nor la (luckily, we ere eating at home, where chili oil is available). It was quite tasty, with decent use of bean paste and armoatics. Both types of tofu where really nice.

Ramen with vegetables tofu, and abura-age. Broth made of miso, fresh soy milk and sesame oil. Interesting, as I never had soy milk used as a soup/sauce base.

The food was quite nice, if a bit light on the seasoning. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with some chili oil, salt and MSG. The tofu very good, which is sadly rare in Israeli restaurants. Enough leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

For me the major perk of working in my home office - the canteen is excellent. And seems to have everyday exactly what I want 😉 ...

my canteen was serving junk food for lunch today. Had some peanut butter filled pretzels and a couple of spoons of Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby ice cream. Just not in the mood for real food.

Still catching up with posting.

More of the noodle salad that I made the evening before, this time I changed up the vegetables a bit - charring the peppers and chilies (like when making a salsa), adding tomatoes, more mint and crisp fried peas (bought).

Cold rice noodles with peanut sauce (includes soy sauce, garlic, lime zest and juice, fish sauce, dark sugar), sweet peppers, chilies, cucumbers, tomatoes, spring onions, basil, mint, peanuts, soft boiled eggs.

I love those peas as a snack, especially the wasabi ones. Never thought to use them as a crunch factor in a dish. Thanks for the inspiration.

They are awesome in cabbage based salads.

I also used the wasabi ones along with pickled ginger in a slaw of kohlrabi and raddish.

I could swear I’d posted some of this a day or so ago.  I specifically remember typing a message to that his spaghetti and meat sauce lunch looked so good that Mr. Kim looked at it and announced that he was making his meat sauce and that happened for dinner today. (I have no idea why these lines are underlined and can't do manage to stop it).

On Friday, my lunch was a leftover crab cake, cold from the fridge, slapped on a bun, and slathered with my Old Bay cocktail sauce:

IMG_2811.thumb.jpg.47bcd3e1920dbbf8ea803ff73f54b910.jpg

Delicious!

Monday was lunch in the car from our favorite hot dog joint.  Nice snappy, charred dog with kraut and mustard:(This one, too):

IMG_2826.thumb.jpg.73289a6abb57059d4167c8abcb449c9b.jpg

Carolina dog with mustard, chili, and slaw:

IMG_2827.thumb.jpg.cca08a980ff479908dcb9b9be036ab47.jpg

On a whim, I bought one of those electric toastie makers at Lidl.  Did a recommended trial first run with just bread slices:

IMG_2839.thumb.jpg.774e184b1037d69ec70e8f3f862276f0.jpg

Not too sure about this.  It took twice as long as the recommended cook time to get them that toasty looking and they seemed awfully hard when I got them out.  We’ll see.

Yesterday we picked up lunch from a local place that has been getting national attention - ZZQ, and which we had never tried before:

IMG_2848.jpg.abd3ccb20dbc0c51f922639f5e0a7c92.jpg

We got the pulled pork and the brisket and made sandwiches with them when we got home.  The pulled pork and sauce:

IMG_2852.jpg.36f2f22ec77a98ff4f9b78066a5b7ce5.jpg

So good.  Really tender and not the slightest bit mushy.  The brisket packet:

IMG_2850.jpg.168de044d685299a84f07dc6048510a0.jpg

The brisket:

IMG_2853.jpg.994a1cef178cd21c192e84596bb6e52f.jpg

It was, without a doubt, the best brisket that either of us has ever tasted.  We brought all of it home and made this weird looking sandwich with the brisket:

IMG_2854.jpg.ad49245e81e577951a39c38614e70880.jpg

And this more normal looking one with the pork:

IMG_2855.jpg.ab45e183fb22d06b07168cebff7e6732.jpg

The meal was one of those where you keep telling each other how good it is.

@Kim Shook I’d get rid of the “toastie” maker in favor of a panini press. You can make great grilled sandwiches and you can also grill hotdogs and burgers on it in a pinch.

  That brisket looks like heaven.

I do have a panini press and I love it.  This was just a little cheap ($14?) gadget that I thought might be fun.  I'll get back to you on that. 😉

Lunch today ( @Shelby, you'll appreciate this😁😞

Couldn't make up my mind on the bread, so I did both.
