No wonder that the Subway store here went out of business.

went out to breakfast on Sunday on the menu was a couple of vegetarian dishes.

One item in the list of ingredients caught my eye. "Vegetarian Butter"

huh?

Well its butter made from plant oils like coconut oil, olive oil, bran oil...........doesn't that make it margarine? (or as its commonly referred to processed industrial waste)

Be kind first.

Be nice.

(If you don't know the difference then you need to do some research)

I've been seeing this for quite a while when grocery shopping (Canada). In the dairy section there's products labelled butter, margarine and plant based butter. Plant based 'butter' is margarine but usually with fancier packaging and a higher price. Not for me.

Well, we get plant based everything now, so why not butter?  It's called marketing. Or lying.

Unlike margarine, plant-based butter does not include hydrogenated oils. At least that's my understanding. Please correct me if I'm mistaken. Also, plant-based butter is completely free of any animal products, while margarine may still contain trace amounts of dairy.

This is even funnier, because 'vegetarian butter' is just..butter! Butter has always been vegetarian (but not vegan).

Read the ingredients list of most of those products and you'll find 'modified palm oil and modified palm kernel oil'.

'Modified', from an organic chemistry perspective, means hydrogenated.
