Deer are beautiful animals though, don't you think?. People have disrupted their natural areas and their natural predators. The deer here can drive us nuts but I can see how they follow the same routes they probably have for hundreds if not thousands of years. It's the cougars who stay away from urban areas (and woe to them if they don't) and the deer now take their chances with automobiles rather than natural predators or hunters. 

 

We had a young buck in our backyard tonight and he just looked hot and tired and was enjoying the shade and we didn't have the heart to chase him off. Even though some fecker ate our hydrangeas last week, ahem.

Deer are beautiful animals and it is fantastic seeing them in the wild. 

 

Sadly us humans believe they are 'vermin' as WE encroach on THEIR territory, yet when they simply try to survive, they are negatively labeled...

 

'Tis an overcast day in Ontario - wonder what it's like up in the Northern parts....heard rain in the forecast - will be great for the gardens (and my dead lawn!)

 I am awake and in my room drinking coffee waiting for the rest of the house to wake up but I looked out across the marina and it was gray, drizzly and misty.  I don’t mind much as we are heading to Sudbury today and I am always excited at an opportunity to wander through HomeSense.  I have saved a few pennies to splurge in there.

Here in New Brunswick, a deer actually got into the provincial legislature building in Fredericton a few years back and caused quite a commotion.

 

In my neighbourhood they seem rather partial to hostas. In a month or so (presumably as other foods become coarser in the late-summer heat) the hostas up and down my street will all have a perfect crew cut, thanks to the deer. Small herds routinely cross the schoolyard opposite my house in the early evening, then look both ways (I kid you not) before crossing the street and continuing down the hill. One morning as my GF's daughter was sitting on the front steps having a coffee and a cigarette, a yearling actually walked right up to her and sniffed at her coffee to see if it was anything interesting. She was pretty freaked out.

 

My favorite deer moment came about six years ago, when I lived in the pretty little resort town of St. Andrews. It was December, and I watched in some amusement as a small herd of deer wandered the streets rubbernecking at the Christmas decorations, for all the world like the busloads of tourists we'd get in summer.

Just as there is no proper tonic water to be found in Little Current -  buttermilk was nowhere to be found. Fortunately I happened to have some culture here and was able to make my own.

That buttermilk looks to me like yogurt. The stuff I buy is never thick like that, so I'm wondering if that's just the top layer and underneath it's thinner?

 

Also, what the hell are those white apples in your first photo?

It's thick but not as thick as yogurt - stirring it seems to thin it out.

Wild blueberry season has started early and Sudbury has a good crop (had some at the farmers market from there last week).  Keep an eye out!

 It is a slow, slow drive into Sudbury. 

 

 

We are following behind a truck that is watering the highway. This is a 2 Lane Highway. Do you think if he waters it frequently enough it will become a 4 - lane highway?

Yes for the dust. There’s a lot of construction going on so a lot of dust is being kicked up so they lay down some water to try and control it.

Odd.  Unless the vendor was blowing smoke.  Though that was 2 weeks ago, maybe the recent dry spell has hit the patches.

 We are just back from Sudbury. Kerry is rustling up a cocktail in the kitchen and I am trying to replace my fluids with a coffee and a tonic water both at the same time.  

 

 

This is why they water the road. It got so much worse than this. We felt like we were driving through a white out in the middle of winter before we cleared this area and its dust. 

 

 When we have caught our breath we will post more photos of our day’s adventures.

We started at STOP, the restaurant supply store in Sudbury,  then we hit a bunch of thrift stores before heading over to Home Sense and finishing up at Costco. For the first time that I recall we did not visit a single liquor store in Sudbury.  Kerry said to add that it just about killed us.

Before we headed home we had dinner at My Thai Palace on Notre Dame Ave. 

 

 

 Crispy calamari. Kerry remarked how straight they were but the server didn’t seem to find that at all amusing. She apparently had very little knowledge of squid.  However they were tender and tasty.  

 

 

 Basil noodles with beef.

 

 

 Penang curry with chicken. 

 

 

 Thai sticky rice.
