Shit. I'm cleaning out an unfinished room in the house. We have purchased the framing and insulation, so it's time to make this room a room.

So, in the process, I determined that I was getting rid of everything in there, since we haven't looked at any of it in almost 10 months.

But, as a precaution, I did open the lids of all of the boxes. 26 boxes ready for the landfill. One box of dress up clothes (including my wedding dress) destined for my cousin's little girls.

One box was cookbooks saved by my dad from his mother's house, augmented by my mother and sister. :wub::wub:

Add 26 for me that I didn't even know I had, including a dog-eared copy of "Cutting Up In The Kitchen" and a pristine copy of Florence Lin's noodle and dumpling book. And, what appears to be every Farm Journal Cookbook ever published. I now have two copies of most of the latter. You can't go wrong with those FJ pickle/canning or freezing books.

I was bored at work last week and found my way over to Overstock. Today I came home to Patricia Wells' Trattoria and the infamous Zuni Cafe (which I got for 40% off!!!!!!). The latter was a total eg peer envy purchase after hearing about snowangel's delight with the recipes.

Add two more for me. The Gourmet Cookbook (60+ years and 1,000+ recipes chosen from the publication with notes) came in the mail today from goodcook.com. Great prices there. This was not the book I thought I ordered, but that was strictly my mistake. After flipping through it's staying anyway! :rolleyes:

Also the Edible Mexican Garden Cookbook from a eg member in the cookbook swap. Beautiful oversize book -- and the recipes look delicious too. Ideal accompaniment for my garden, and the other book I received, but it's a kitchen gardening advice/almanac compilation not cookbook. The price -- free -- was perfect on that one! :raz::biggrin:

However, temptation has again crossed my path, this time in the form of a "please come back" package from The Good Cook, and I don't know how long I can hold out. Four books for a dollar, buy another at the regular price, and that's it. Hey, like they say, I can quit any time I want.

Um, this is embarrassing, but could you subtract these six from the total?

I had a $100 gift card to B&N and went nuts and spent a little under $200 on the listed cookbooks. Got home and had buyer's remorse, especially when I checked Amazon and realized I could have bought the same books for $120 (with super saving free shipping). I returned them all to B&N and although the books are now in my Amazon shopping cart, I'm resisting pulling the trigger for now.

I'll save my gift card for when Chef John Folse's Encyclopedia of Cajun and Creole Cuisine comes in.

Despite the lack of space to expand my collection, I've added 24 new titles. There are about 40 more that I want and then I'll be out of room. What will I do for the rest of my life? Most of the culling has already been done. I hope this is the worst problem I ever have. The new ones include:

gaaaahhh!! have another six to confess to - how did that happen?!? Of course I am secretly very pleased with all my purchases but felt it was good form to at least pretend that I am appalled at my lack of self discipline:

Harold McGee - on Food and Cooking. Well, couldn't not have it really could I? The only thing is, I tend to read my cookbooks in bed - but I fear falling asleep in the small hours of the morning, only to wake - gasping for breath as the weight of the book crushes the air from my lungs! :laugh:

Tessa Kiros - Falling Cloudberries - had resisted for a long time but it is in fact a lovely lovely book. It's basically a collection of family recipes, but given the author's exotic and well travelled roots (born in London to a Finnish mother and a Greek-Cypriot father. Spent much of childhood in South Africa before travels through Asia and Europe and cooking in London, Sydney, Athens and Mexico. She then married an Italian and now lives in Tuscany!) - it's a pretty big spread.

Then - some bargains in the recent sales - such as

Chantal Coady (of Rococco) - chocolate - for bargain price of £3.50. That's just under $7 at current exchange rates, but under normal rates of £1=$1.5 - taht would be $5!!

Usula Ferrigno - Bringing Italy Home - only £5

Henrietta Green et al - fast food for friends - £3

Nick Nairn - 100 salmon recipes - £5 or so?

The last two were purchased from a remainders store in York - and so it's amazing I only left with two books!!

All in all - not a bad haul. Need to start doing some more cooking don't I?!?

I have been seriously remiss in not tallying the count this week. Lord, I'm jealous.

(Pweaver, I counted: 55. Alex, just give up already -- at least it's legal. Susan, what a wonderful discovery.)

77,709. Just get your heads around that figure! And I know it's probably only about a quarter of what the Society really owns.

I forgot to respond to reject my Good Cook club book-of-the-month, so now I have the new Gourmet (of the infamous yellow type). I can't believe how much I like this cookbook. So far I've made vanilla ice cream, ricotta hotcakes--both great.

Just have to add here how often lately I've used the new Jacques Pepin Fast Food My Way (already included in my previous count). That book has helped me get dinner on the table at the last minute about 5 times already. And everything's been something I will make again (!).

After the holidays I reported that the copy of Bouchon I received was only a stand-in until TFL arrived.

Well, Blovie got me a new copy of Bouchon. It showed up yesterday. As I stated back then, I knew I would get it eventually.
