Cookbooks – How Many Do You Own? (Part 3)

Recommended Posts

Nah, pdf format doesn't count for the purposes of this thread, nor do our old 3 X5  cards and printouts from the net.  But they sure count in the kitchen, and I'd love to spend about a year going through everyones stash of recipes!

But, I'm assuming that if one put these into a home-made cookbook, that book would count...yes?

Susan, I hate to get all legalistc here  , but unless your cookbook has been bound , published, or avaiable at, say, Amazon, the answer is a regretful ... no. I'd boost my own count here if I could include all my binders and homemade books, but that would be inserting the thin edge of the wedge that leads to the slippery slope!

Ok. Add 3 more for me:

Jacques Pepin's The Art of Cooking volume I & II

The Ossoli Club Cook Book [no copyright date, but an ad inside dates it to 1911].

The Ossoli Club Cook Book is in decent shape for it's age and is full of interesting turn of the century recipes.

As far as Jacques is concerned, he is second only, in my book, to Julia Child in his area of expertise.

Add two more for me:

The Cuisines of Asia: Nine Great Oriental Cuisines by Technique by Jennifer Brennan

The Liberal Table, which is a cookbook of recipes collected by Midland County Texas Democrats (not a large group, according to the friend who sent it to me), their families, and friends.

Dear Food: I hate myself for loving you.

Shhh! I'm trying to keep it from The Dane, but I just couldn't resist Harold McGee's new book and picked it up today.

I have about 200.

I don't really have a favorite, I just have different phases. The Marcella - Italian phase.. the Claudia Roden - Middle Eastern phase.. etc.

At the moment I am in dough & pastry phase so I search through all my cookbooks looking for breads, cookies, pastry and pies!

There have been a few cookbook/recipe threads happening recently.  I simply want to know, as a strictly academic exercise, how many cookbooks the greater eGullet commumity owns.  End to end, would they circle the world?

C'mon, take a few minutes or half an hour.  Post the totals here.  And it ain't some friggin' contest!  Many great cooks have few books, and many non-cooks own lots.

Food magazines don't count.

I'll keep a running total.  Awbrig, don't forget to count the Nancy Silverton book we borrowed.

It's relaxing.  Glass of wine in hand, go out there and count.

I'll post my count later in the week. Back in '99, we were hit by a tornado (followed by several inches of rain that lasted for 2 days), and by the time I could get to my books, they were all waterlogged and beginning to mold and mildew. So I cataloged them as I put them in the dumpster, which was about the most painful thing I have done in my entire life. I don't remember how many I had, but I felt like I was throwing my entire life history away. Every book (including some that were not cookbooks) had been purchased for a specific reason, in pursuit of a particular skill, interest, or answer to a question.

JUST FOR YOU, I'll open up that Excel file again and count. And then I'll count the current number and report in.

Latest arrival: Les Halles

On order: Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah Madison. This one's looking dicey. It's from an auction I won on Ebay, but in the month that's passed, the Post Office has not managed to deliver two separate money orders sent to the seller (who unfortunately does not take PayPal). But that's not only another thread, it's a whole 'nother list. Hopefully, soon, I'll be able to add this to my count. But I'm not holding my breath.

6 more for me!!!

I attended the annual Goddard-Riverside Community Center Book Sale and picked up 4 cookbooks and 2 memoirs. All books are discounted at 50% or greater and the money goes to charity. My latest additions are:

A Return to Cooking - Eric Ripert w/Michael Ruhlman

A Blessing of Bread - Maggie Glezer

Flavor - Rocco DiSpirito (yeah, I know it's Rocco, but I've heard good things about the book)

Seduction of Rice - Alford and Duguid

The other two are:

Between Bites - James Villas (for $1!!!)

Love by the Glass - Gaiter and Brecher (the wine columnists for the WSJ. I adore their column)

Blovie, were you there today?!? I was...and it's funny, as I was looking through the tables of cookbooks, I thought of muttering eGullet under my breath to see if anyone else was there!

Pretty impressive selection and great prices, but I did enough damage at the other tables, so I restrained myself over in that section.

I got there at around 3 this afternoon. Those 6 were the extent of my damage -- $82 plus one of their great canvas sacks (which are great for marketing).

only 39. I have many waiting to be bought on my amazon wishlist. I envy the 100+ collections some of you have. Sadly, I don't think my tiny apartment will hold much more. I've already started setting aside volumes that need to be put into storage.

Maybe I'll have to rotate my cookbooks in and out of the storage unit by season, like I do my clothes.

I have to add another 10 to my collection. The biggest score was the Escoffier Cookbook, first American Edition for about a dollar at a high school booksale this weekend. It's in mint condition and looks like it was never even opened. I audibly gasped trying to hide my shock and glee as I was paying for it. Hehehe. Still very excited.

I'm only adding one today. Breath of the Wok. This is a beautiful work, and will reside on my nightstand for quite some time (with trips to the kitchen).

I just love cookbooks that are more than recipes; the ones with lots of talk.

Hello, all. We are now semi-settled in our new apartment, but 40 boxes of cookbooks are in storage. The beautiful shelves I had built for them don't fit here, so I have to make some difficult decisions. We are putting bookcases on all available walls. Maggie, I hope your calculator won't blow up at the thought of subtracting from the total. I will make sure they go to good homes. Of course, I'm leaving a little space for new purchases. Snowangel, I went to the Slow Foods event for Grace Young here in Seattle. She is as lovely as her book. I also got The les Halles book, of course. So, add one before you start docking me.

I know for a fact (children can't keep secrets) that les Halles is my my Xmas stocking. Plus three others (the "I want" list is on the fridge, so it's no secret). I can't wait! I can only renew les Halles once more from the library!

Ironically, Grace Young was on Sara Moulton today as I was eGulleting. I can only assume she is as gracious and elegant in person as she is on TV.

Add two copies (mine and Busboy's) of Bourdain's Les Halles book to the list :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Jumping in here very late on this thread.

Total count right now is 24.

I also lost quite a few (19) when a storm hit, peeling off part of the roof of my storge bldg on the property while I was out of state in grad school. Did not even know the damage had occured for weeks. By then the cookbooks at that end and many others as well were pulp. I still go to the shelf thinking one will be there.

Most recent additions are:

Bread Baker's Apprentice by Peter Reinhart

All About Braising by Molly Stevens

Emeril's Potluck (smirk away, but there's some good stuff in this :raz:)

City Tavern Baking and Dessert Cookbook by Walter Staub (at Philadelphia's historic City Tavern -- over 200 years of recipes and history, one of those chatty cookbooks; interesting to see recipes from Thomas Jefferson and cronies as well as what Staub is doing now)

Slow Cooker Cookbook by Natalie Haughton (it was a freebie, but might prove worth the shelf space )

The Cooking of South-West France by Paula Wolfert (love this one and awaiting the new edition spring of 2006!)

On order:

Cotton Country Collection by the ladies of Monroe LA

Great recommendation for this from Mayhaw Man and I ordered it for the turkey roasting method he was describing, among other good foods. It will, of course, arrive the day after Thanksgiving.

He he he

Add two copies (mine and Busboy's) of Bourdain's Les Halles book to the list

And do you get extra points for a personal signing?:raz:

Practice. Do it over. Get it right.

Mostly, I want people to be as happy eating my food as I am cooking it.
