The Ladies Who Lunch (Part 3)

Kim Shook

Recommended Posts

So a while back while I was waiting for a medical procedure to be done another patient who was waiting for the same procedure and I got into a discussion and somehow, I can't imagine how, the subject turned. to food. It just happens that this other patient is a server at a restaurant in Milton, Ontario called Pasqualino's.  He was prordly bragging about the gnocchi made in the restaurant. It is made by someone who normally works in construction but is brought in to make the gnocchi for the restaurant.  Knowing how much Kerry loves gnocchi when he offered me a business card I took it.

Today I knew that Kerry had business in Milton and that I would be unable to accompany her for various reasons. But I thought she might be able to grab some lunch there without me.

Instead she sent me the menu by text I ordered by text and she brought lunch to my house.  Let me tell you people it doesn't get any better than this!

Gnocchi for Kerry which she said were excellent with some very interesting bread.

IMG_1202.thumb.JPG.898539cf9173dffc42170d03e7f87728.JPG

A grilled chicken sandwich with a nice salad for me.

Not only do I have lunch, I have dinner too  as the sandwich was extremely generous.

Excuse my verbosity but I thought you'd enjoy this story.

Today we returned to Maro. When the server came to our table and asked what we would like I said, "A sweater!"   Man oh man it was cold in there. And when you are that cold it's hard to enjoy your lunch. But we soldiered on for a little while.

Kerry ordered tea and the server assumed it was for both of us!  Kerry was quite happy to drink 2 cups and then order tea again and get two more cups!   It is served with saffron sugar.  She had finished 2 cups before we thought take a photograph but the tea cups and the little holder of the saffron sugar are worth looking at anyway.

Kerry ordered the burrito which is completely unphotogenic.

But my plate surely made up for that.  This is Teta. Steamed dandelion topped with caramelized onion, Lebanese garlic potato, muhammara, cabbage and beets.

I like my cold beverages very cold too.  In fact, I take my beer out of a very cold fridge and put it into the freezer for 10 minutes then pour into an iced beer mug.

Kerry asked me where I would like to have lunch today and I told her I would love to return to Celli's Osteria in Burlington. I fancied their mushroom pizza  and I recalled that their calamari was not to be missed either.  So we drove to the restaurant, found a parking spot, paid for the parking and then Kerry said things did not seem quite as they should. She peered through the windows and there were no tables set,  no evidence of human  habitation.  The  notice on the front door told us why. They were closing their doors after 10 years. Further notices indicated  an application for zoning for erection of condominiums. Damn.

Plan B was to drive up and down Brant  Street to see if anything else called out to us.  And so we ended up again at August 8 (even though it was really August 29).

A selection of dim sum. The dish on the right was the most interesting treatment of calamari.  It was in a mild curry sauce and was cooked such that it still had some bite to it.

Mango pudding. We showed our ethnocentric bias when we sent it back  noting that it was dessert and should come after. :D:DxD   The server obliged and we felt safe in the arms of a tradition that if you don't eat your dinner you don't get dessert. xD

So these two ladies who lunch (@Kerry Beal and I),  found ourselves having to share breakfast today to accommodate an early shift for Kerry.

Since it is a holiday here, as it is most places, we were not sure what might be open. I turned to Siri for assistance and he suggested Mo's.

A nice touch were the carafes of tea and coffee!

Two recent lunches with two different lady friends:

Last week, after a morning of birding and photography on the Texas City Dike, my lady friend and I lunched at Taqueria La Hacienda in Texas City. I had been there before, with my sisters in June, and knew my friend would like it, especially the charro beans!

My friend had the Chicken Flautas and I had the Beef Tacos Al Carbon.

Today, another lady friend and I met at Malay Malay in League City, where my husband and I had dined for dinner last week.

The Roti Canai is an Indian style pancake served with a curry dipping sauce. The pancakes are crispy on the outside and layered and flaky on the inside. So good! The dipping sauce is their base for their Chicken and Potato Curry, without the Chicken.

I read upthread somewhere that this thread does not necessarily have to be ladies who lunch, so a modest contribution from me.  We had lunch today at a Korean place, which is a cafeteria type place in the basement of an office building.  It is run by a Korean husband and wife and the food is wonderful.  We go there from time to time, their specialty is Korean fried chicken which we have had a number of times but today I had the seafood pancake and John had the fire chicken with noodles.

Scooted across the border this am to visit with @patris and pick up my Spinzall.

We drove out to Lancaster, NY and had a lovely lunch at 99 Brick Oven Bar and Grill.

We dropped in at a great little bean to bar chocolate shop Dark Forest Chocolate and had a nice chat with the couple that own it - we tasted several of their chocolates and bought a few bars to bring home. We were particularly taken with their malted bar and their dark milk chocolate.

Strange...that's the first time in a VERY long time that I've seen an actual bottle of ketchup on a restaurant table...for centuries I've only seen the ubiquitous (how I HATE how that word is over used) plastic squeeze bottle.
