had somde sort of chemical flavour

 

just a hint .  I don't associate that flavor w english muffins.

 

I believe there are two types of Brie - style cheeses ;

 

one ages and ' runs ' :  you can tell this type if they sell them in slices :

 

the slices ' bulge '

 

the other type is designed not to run at all , for some reason.

 

I dont recall what makes the cheese non-runny , but its made that way

 

' on purpose ' .  why ? I have no idea.

 

Tj's has both :  if the slice has a sharp cut wrapped in the chiler

 

its likely not to run nor age too much.

 

the more bulge , the more flavor , esp if you continue to age it at hom

 

unwrapped , but loosely covered , @ room temp.

 

my favorite cheese.

I think with both Aldi and TJ's, all the bakery stuff is contracted locally... I know where the Philly area TJs gets its baked stuff from... Go to the Le Bus bakery store in KofP and lots of familiar TJ stuff is there.  Aldi must do the same... the logistics for distributing baked goods on a more than regional basis just won't work.  So comparing baked goods from either of these places is a fool's errand unless you're shopping in the same region.

A lot of "store bakeries" buy frozen par-baked goods and just finish them.

But neither TJ nor Aldi has an in store bakery... they both have a rack of shelves that baked goods in plastic bags reside upon.

this is true.

 

however , when done well , a +++

 

LaBrea bakery , in LA  started seeing frozen french bread

 

it had standards on which store could carry it.

 

it was outstanding when you got it fresh

 

even in NewEngland , where one Stop&shop used to sell it

 

one that I knew of.  it was about 30 minutes away

 

but I used to go there from time to time just for that bread.

 

TJ's gets frozen bread ( sourdough ) from PigsThatFly

 

a NH bakery that makes superb sourdough ( toast shape ) bread

 

its put out from frozen on the racks at night

 

the night before .  freshest is at the back , and the bread ' trays' pull out

 

Aldi had no bread of any special significance at all.

I tried the Aldi  Chicken and Herb tortellini last night.

 

I simmered 1/2 of it in my medium AllClad saucier , A method Ive been using for a while 

 

in chicken stock.

 

w smaller pasta shapes :

 

 

when the T were cooked , off the head I added two beaten eggs , and some chopped Tj's

 

Parmesan-is.  of note on the TJ's cheese ;  I froze several wedges , Vac'd  first

 

when thawed , they were more crumbly than when fresh.

 

not a bad feature .  then added some finely sliced green on ion  tops.

 

a sort of Sracciatella style prep

 

it was very very tasty and a keeper.

 

this Aldi version is identical , to my tastes , as the Brand Name

 

 

its 7.49 or more at RocheBro , and the Aldi is around  $ 4 for the same amount.

Ive noticed

 

when Ive blitz'd Aldi

 

they have Pizza's . im guessing 

 

in their refrigerator spaces

 

these are the same that Walmart carries

 

however , I was moving so fast

 

I did not notice if they have 12 " Brown Box Pizza's

 

I could see they have large

 

but Id try a 12 " as that fits in the Bevville

went to Aldi this Am

 

senior hours

 

mostly for more bird seed.

 

but they did not have any more 20 lbs bag

 

no problem ,I ordered 2 x 40 lbs from walmart

 

Im guessing part of the Aldi ' frugal ' business model

 

is they keep very little stock reserves.  thus when the pallet of 20 lbs 

 

bird seed was gone , it was replaced by something else.

 

i think the birds like the Pennington better

 

they did have two chocolates they were out of before :

 

mint dark , and orange dark.

 

they also had the bratwursts I like.

 

so not a bad trip.   and no one else in the store until I left.

I think the quality of individual Aldi's varies wildly.  I belong to an Aldi FB group and the things that people find in their local Aldi regularly astound me.  Our stores are good, basic small grocery stores.  They actually remind me of a local chain that I grew up with (Magruder's in the Washington DC area, if anyone is familiar with them) - small personal, but complete as far as products go.  You could do all your shopping there, but whether you would or not would depend on your ability to travel.

I get the supermarket circulars in the US mail , either Thursday or Friday.

 

Aldi's circular ads start Monday - Sunday.

 

however , the meat sales , including fish , start on Wednesday

 

and all are " while supplies last "

 

unusual .  Are they trying to get me in the store Monday , for 49 cent mangos

 

and back again on Wednesday ?

My Aldi weekly ads have prices good from Wed thru Tues. 

Sometimes, but not always, there are limited-time specials that also start on Wed, along with the rest of the circular.  This week, they had flap steak on special for 2 days only, Wed & Thurs.

I had asked an employee about some non-food items that went on sale (according to their ad circular) on Wednesday (which were sold out when I dropped by Aldi's after work). She said they're limited item sales that when they run out, they run out. She didn't say it outright but the implication from her was that they were intended to get people into the store on Wednesday's and they never got a lot of the items. She said there was usually a line at the door waiting for them to open on Wednesday' mornings and those limited items sell out first thing in the morning.

Some store call them "loss leaders". They work, though, getting people into the stores.

Ours are also Weds-Tues. Often they don't even get some of the items in the circular. They have some distribution issues in this area. The odd part to me is that while my nearest store may not get something, I can usually get it at another store that is about 10 miles away. I keep wondering if it depends on what they think will sell at each location or if the store managers have something to do with it.

compartment .  can't say if it's the same for you.

 

Id love to like Ham a bit more ....

 

and get a spiral boneless 

 

for summer sandwiches.

I now realize that spiral boneless

 

even though the initial cost

 

( even on sale )   it higher

 

then end result on the plate

 

or in the sandwich 

 

is less expensive.

As much as I worship at the Aldi altar, the aisle of shame, for me, is like a dollar store with extraordinarily bad taste- and, much like a dollar store, for the most part, you're not really getting any good deals. You're just paying a dollar for stuff that, for the most part, isn't worth a dollar. While I'm sure that dollar stores have rabid FB groups, it doesn't necessarily make them special.  When I was a child, Woolworths would have decent candy, but, they'd have aisle after aisle of basically garbage that almost no one would buy. I can celebrate a fairly good turkey-free kielbasa that's about $3/lb, but I'm not celebrating the dollar store.  Don't get me wrong, I'll shop at the dollar store, but, I'm not going to celebrate it.
