These arrived yesterday ... they have pretty much replaced chipotles in my pepper larder. They're smokey, milder than the chipotles but still with ample heat, and have a smoother, more rounded flavor. The downside is that they are not always available and not many places carry them. But they are well worth seeking. They will be used in a chili I'm making after the weekend.

I'm a big fan of pasilla de Oaxaca but find them considerably more expensive than other chillies.  How are the prices of your source?

Thank you.   Wow, the last time I purchased them from Kalustyan's, they were $29.99 for 3 ounces (90g) for A grade (large) and they're usually expensive but have lots of hard to find things.

On their website, the current prices are:

https://foodsofnations.com/products/pasilla-de-oaxaca-dried-chiles-mild-hot-67012300136?_pos=2&_psq=oaxaca&_ss=e&_v=1.0

normal grade

https://foodsofnations.com/products/pasilla-de-oaxaca-extra-large-medium-hot-67012300133?_pos=3&_psq=oaxaca&_ss=e&_v=1.0

superior grade, extra large

FYI, pasilla chilies are different from pasilla-de-Oaxaca.  Regular pasillas don't have the characteristic heavy smokiness that the Oaxaca ones have and are much less expensive.

That's quite the well-traveled chorizo!

Well-travelled indeed but not the most well-travelled in my arsenal.

Many years ago I was given a bottle of Gleneagles mineral water on a British Airways flight from Hong Kong to London. It is a Scottish brand. It amused me that it had already travelled half way round the world and was about to travel back.

I didn’t drink it but took it with me. Then travelled back, first to HK again, then into mainland China. For no good reason, I have carried that bottle of water with me everywhere I have travelled for the last 30 years. It has been to the UK and back at least 7 times. It has been to Ireland, France, Italy, and Spain. It has been to almost every SE Asian country (Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and to Vietnam, etc). It has been to Japan twice and has travelled the length and breadth of China.

I cant think why, but it amuses me. I’m not in the least superstitious so, it’s not for ‘luck’ as most people I’ve told assume. Nor is it ‘emotional support’. I take my pet ostrich for that!

The bottle is looking a bit bashed now, but still intact.

I bought the Chico and the Grande from these folks this time, and am not satisfied. The peppers that I opened and tried, the chico, were dry and brittle, i.e., old. The first batch of these peppers that I bought was from World Spice, and they were beautiful, smooth, supple, and aromatic. They'll be my go-to when World Spice is restocked unless I find something comparable. There are a couple of other sources I'm looking at.

I bought a new fifth-wheel trailer recently, and hit the road in it late in January. Look what caught up to me in the mail!

What a nice surprise! Will you please share the recipe from the back of the card? I looked on their website and blog but it’s not there.

Now I'm in the mood for a cookie. Thankfully, there are none in the house.

My San Diego friends are inveterate declutterers, unlike me. They knew I was coming back to Yuma to a yard sale for an organization I belong to here, so they cast about for things to unload on me. Among the booty was a bunch of nut-meat (or crab meat?) pickers and some bottle corks from South Africa with hand-carved, beautifully smooth wood.

I wish I had a couple of those pickers! I used to have a set and apparently I got rid of them because I don't have them. Now I bugger up the tip of a small cheap knife since I don't have any proper pickers.

I bought a set of crab pickers just before Covid struck. The price of crabs went through the roof  and then some and never came back down again. So, I've never used them. Not even sure where they are now.

I definitely didn't buy all of these, but all of a sudden, I have a bunch of La Boite. Inherited, absconded with, whatever. I find it hard to use them. Stuff is expensive!

Restocked my favorite pasta:

I used to buy this at Buon Italia. Lately I've been getting Afeltra from Eataly, just because it's easier for me to get to on public transport. Will have to see if the free delivery applies to Brooklyn. Have you compared this to the Eataly brands, in price / quality?

Edited to add: I'm addicted to the Vesuvio shape.

@weinoo, spices/herbs/blends are the only thing I have more of than Rancho Gordo beans. Somehow these things breed in my pantries and have multiplied by the next time I open the door.

Spices and herbs! I know right. They somehow kept multiplying. Hehe.

I haven't compared to the Eataly brands, per se. But my favorite dried pastas are Setaro, Faella (which Gustiamo was first responsible for importing), and Senatore Cappelli.  I find that even if they get a little more cooking than they should, they remain al dente.  Don't get me wrong - I will use Ronzoni or Barilla - but for things like macaroni salad or mac and cheese.

At $12.95 per kilo, it's under $6/lb...I can live with that, at least for now!

I got a package in the mail from my mom yesterday.  She sent me these neat jar lids for fermenting:

I have cabbage that's been in the fridge forever so I'm going to attempt sauerkraut again.  Last time it got moldy.  Crossing my fingers for this batch to turn out.

Have you ever checked out either his shop or his books?  I am particularly fond of The Spice Companion (eG-friendly Amazon.com link).

Hi Mr. Weinstein sir. @weinoo

Great to bump into you here. All my spices and blends are laser-focused onto blends from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran. I have about 40+ cookbooks that I am still trying to cook through. Here in eGullet, I have started to share some of these masale blends I've made and have presented in the form of mise-en-place collage.

I consider myself a "masalchi" in training.

That's great. But all I asked is if you checked out his book (s) or his shops.
