From Schlesinger Library .

Cambridge, Mass.--The Schlesinger Library of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University is acquiring the Elizabeth David papers. The foremost British food writer of her day and author of nine definitive books, David (1913-1992) famously helped reawaken the postwar British palate while educating, through authentic recipes and compelling investigation, a generation of cooks about food and its joys. The collection of David's correspondence, diaries, travel journals, handwritten recipe files and photographs--which is coming from Jill Norman, the literary trustee of the David estate and David's publisher, editor and close personal friend--is expected to be available later in the year.

The Schlesinger Library is renowned worldwide for its holdings of published sources that document the range of issues, organizations and activities--from social reform movements through culinary history--in which women have been central. The Elizabeth David papers will add to the library's unparalleled culinary collections, which currently include the Julia Child papers, the MFK Fisher papers and over 16,000 cookbooks.

Gee, you have inspired me. I thought I had too many cookbooks and now I see that 'it is only the beginning' I will continue to buy, not recipe books but cookbooks. I read them like novels.

Two more for me. I finally bought David Thompson's Thai Food and the cookbook put together by my daughter's preschool - I hope that one counts. It's a little thin, but the Thai book more than makes up for it.

I bought 6 this week, but gave them all to Mamster and Nightscotsman. Who gets the credit? Many, many new titles coming out in time for Mothers' Day. I hope to use some restraint. Or not.

Well, Strand Books was in between the liquor store and the grocery where I had to get milk, so . . . :blush: Uh oh, two more.

Question: Marguerite Patten was the best selling cookbook author in the UK in the late 1960s? Oh dear!!!!!!! So much in Savoury Cooking is awful! But at least it was cheap. :biggrin: So was the Time-Life Cooking of the British Isles.

A week ago tonight, while other Seattlites were already feasting in Vancouver, I was at the Friends of the Library sale. What a goldmine. I got 48 cookbooks ranging from like new in print books at 20% of the cover price to a 1961 Betty Crocker for $4. I had the best of both worlds, getting to Vancouver in plenty of time for some spectacular food. Laurie, who was with me, found a hardcover edition of Fancy Pantry for $1. Does anyone else attend their local sale? What have you found? Suzanne, when i first started collecting, I lived in the white apartment building across 12th St. from The Strand. I still have 100's of the cookbooks I bought there.

Add one more for me! Picked up a new Kimchi book yesterday! :biggrin:

I have spent 9 of my 33 years working in libraries (4 as a reference librarian at a University), I organize by Library of Congress # or as close as I can get with my Japanese language cookbooks.

My cookbooks have finally surpassed my anthro/arch books and are probably rivaling my history books at the moment. my close to 1,000 books are all in Library of Congrees order, go ahead call me anal, but I like order! :biggrin:
