Actually they have live chat as well - I used that when I realized they had charged me shipping on 2 out of the 3 that were coming. It was a very efficient way to communicate with them - no french required!

I'll be willing to bet it all comes down to cost - probably cheaper to ship without the box so they save a few shekels per book. It's all about the margins.

Not when they have to process all the returns and have damaged copies on hand.

Kerry, it came in the MC@H "sleeve" that the books fit into but there was no other wrapping i.e. no Amazon box to protect the whole thing. Just the shrink wrap whereas it sounds like yours was shipped in a proper Amazon box.

@ElsieD, I'm very sorry to hear that. We're investigating as to why your book was shipped without any protective packaging. We'll reply on this thread when we have answers from Amazon, but we'll fight to ensure that you receive a new, undamaged copy.

EDIT: Well, I don't suppose it matters as Amazon.ca is going to send a replacement. I just hope they don't repeat their mistake.

Amazon re-sent another shrink-wrap-only package to me. What the hell are they thinking? They are losing money on their sheer stupidity here.

this isnt the minimum wage earners screwing up: its their BigBucks supervisors not bothering to do their job and train their staff. Unless they were sent shrink-wrap only books, the time it takes someone to open the box up and toss it has to be worth something.

SeattleFoodGeek who is with MC commented in an earlier post that they are looking into the Amazon issue. He has promised to provide an update when he has an answer.

that seems really strange. And wasn't it mentioned somewhere upthread that there is supposed to be a factory packaging/box? Maybe they received a shipment that was packed wrong and if their system indicates to not add extra packaging I could see why they just slap a sticker on. Still strange.

Easy to exchange as mentioned above, I'm a book nerd and don't accept books with any damage, returned many many books for exchange. Sometimes they throw heavy art/photo books in a box with a handful of big bubble plastic, hoping for the best. Doesn't always work.

But in this case, I'd also get in touch via the contact link and send them a direct e-mail, let them know that there's definitely something wrong. They appreciate the feedback and will forward it - or so they say at least. I doubt A wants a bunch of these returned, though I don't know what they actually do with returned books. They can't sell them as new if they're damaged, don't know if they have insurance and shred them or sell them to used book stores or what.

I guess when you ask for a replacement, get in touch as well and ask them to pack it as a gift!

According to the CSR I just talked to, that is the way the item is supposed to be shipped: in its "original packaging". So somebody thought that it would be OK to ship these as-is, OR they did not get any of the custom MCaH shipping boxes and decided to fulfill the orders anyway. IMO anyway.

So what I did was re-ordered it and selected the gift option so that it comes inside a box. Now I have two crappy copies to return separately...

I'm assuming Howard re-ordered the third copy and selected the gift box this time.

Mine should be delivered today apparently via DHL. We'll see what I get when I'm home this evening.

I received my copy today, which I had ordered from Amazon US. It arrived in the MCaH cardboard box, with no packaging added from Amazon, and was in pristine condition.

I wonder if all the copies that were shipped in sleeves only came from the same fulfillment center? I'm not sure how many there are in Canada, but that might explain why there has been packaging ranging from sleeve-only to everything-inside-an-Amazon-box.

For reference here's a link back to the post up-topic showing what I think the packaging should look like. I could see amazon.ca skipping the outer box, but that inner box is MC-branded, you should definitely be getting that.

Mine is DHL and just cleared customs. I'm hoping it's in an actual DHL box.

Neither, it was sent through Canada Post. I'm in Canada and ordered from Amazon.ca, as far as I know they ship through Canada Post as a normal shipping option.

Really hoping that my new copy will either be boxed up or undamaged, estimate on when it will be here is next Monday or so.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was that after I received my crappy replacement copy (2nd one), I requested a refund of that one, and then ordered another one using the gift option. This ensures it gets a box. We'll see how it looks like when it comes in...

I did "clean up" most of the sruff marks but one of the corners is actually kind of broken. Sure the books themselves are in mint condition and the box did its job of protecting them, but I think I'll be contacting Amazon for a brand new one like Judy from MC recommended. I paid for a new set and I expect a new set! In the meantime I can keep flipping through the one I have and so far it looks like a fantastic addition to the set. I have to try that peanut sauce...

The UK Amazon has the same problems, they also ship them without a shipping carton. Actually received mine today in good condition but still.

For a book of $100+ dollars it's kinda stupid from amazon.
