Hey Rachel, are you just bringing name tags, or printing them too?  I think that would great so everyone's names would be bold and clear.  Maybe with real name and screen name?  How bout it?

I wasn't planning on pre-printing them because there are so many people coming who are guests of members, so I don't know their names. For that matter, I don't know the names of most of the members either. Instead of leaving the labels & markers out for people, should I set up a table by the entrance and write them all out myself? That way at least they'll be uniform and legible (such as my handwriting is). Hmm, I can put the collection box for Fink on the same table.

sadly, cannot afford to rent a car this weekend, public transportation not practical due to hours and don't know anyone to ask for a ride.  I hope that you guys have a great time and will post extensively afterwards--with as many indecent closeups of food as possible!!!!!  you must, really.

If you still want to go, just post the town where you live -- maybe someone else is coming from the same area and will offer you a ride. Don't worry, Jason will be there shooting as much food porn as possible.

i won't be bringing any sarcone's bread. been told that bread is already readily available.

Who else is bringing bread? The only other bread on the list is cornbread. Bobolink has some interesting bread for sale at their market area (located down the hill from where we will be), but it is not the kind of plain white rolls that would be good for BBQ as far as I know.

We'll be baking a couple of foil pans on Saturday afternoon.  Will only need to be reheated slightly since by the time it arrives it will probably have warmed to ambient temperature.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY.

Unless you mean that you'll be baking on Saturday for Sunday's party. Don't want anyone to show up a day early! (Unless you're planning to help milk the cows.) Moussaka sounds just as good to me as pastitzio. But isn't there potatoes in moussaka? (Since you're making it for Atkins reasons.)

however, if people want to grab that package of cups or plates from their garage before heading out, we can absolutely ensure that we'll be OK.

Yes, this is a great opportunity for everyone to get rid of that bag of miscellaneous party goods left over from various events taking place at your house over the last ten years.

i see that egullet will be offline this weekend for the upgrade.  that means that we need all our ducks in a row by friday i'd guess.

I doubt it will be down all weekend. But it is a good idea to have all questions answered anyway. JIC, people can email me with last minute questions (but not for directions, go to www.cowsoutside.com (Bobolink's website) for that), since my email address is so easy to remember: rachel@egullet.com

Or sheep, for those who don't eat duck.

Tommy, where did you see that?  I can't find the announcement; but then you're a systems person and I'm just a user.  In any case, it should be writ large so that everyone knows, don'tcha think?

It's on the right side of the Daily Gullet, in black text.

Oh. Thanks. Guess that shows that I don't check TDG carefully enough. Oops. But then there are a lot of members who NEVER do, so I still suggest that it be pinned in Site Talk or Announcements, or both.

Rachel:

We're baking Saturday for Sunday. Gary has a spare refrigerator in his garage to keep the pans until Sunday. He'll be bringing them with him

I've seen versions of Moussaka with and without potatoes. Potatoes are a better carb than pasta, unless you're doing whole wheat pasta. I'll check into that.

72 confirmed attendees. Have not rec'd confirmation from Fat Guy and Ellen, hillbill, Jonathan Sibley, Lisa 1349. Lisa had signed up for PA Beer for the potluck, and the others didn't claim a dish..so their absence will not leave a hole in our buffet table...but I certainly hope they can make it anyway!

OK, I've bought the ingredients for the banana pudding (gotta give the bananas a couple of days to ripen).

So no one else make it, you hear!

:laugh:i82.jpg:laugh:

Serious question though, since I've never actually made banana pudding before. Are the cookies supposed to get all soft? Because I could make it all up on Saturday, or I could bring the components with me and assemble it there on Sunday. In either case, I am not doing the baked meringue topping as I don't think it will travel well. Instead, I got a huge clear plastic bowl at a restaurant supply house so you can see the layers.

While there I also got 20 small aluminum takeout trays & lids, if people want to take home leftovers (it still might be a good idea to throw a few of your own plastic containers in your car, JIC. I also got 10 plastic serving spoons, but it also might be a good idea for everyone to bring their own, JIC again.

Ellen and I are coming, that's two people, though only one who will be involved in pork in any way.

We can take on some of the dry goods burden if somebody gives us a shopping list. Any item available at Costco is fair game, as we will be there tomorrow (Friday) AM. Otherwise, I will coordinate with Rachel to plug last-minute gaps.

fg, i'm going to BJ's Madhouse tomorrow morn (friday). i figured i'll get everything. but now i'm thinking that i don't know what everything is.

perhaps a list is in order:

plastic utensils: knives/forks/spoons.

do we need big plastic serving spoons??

plates

cups (i'm planning on the regular old 16 oz or so red plastic cups. do we need any other kind?) if wine is making an appearance, i'd much prefer to get some small clear cocktail type cups as well. i suppose i will just in case unless someone is bringing wine.

napkins

paper towels

garbage bags

we'll need a corkscrew/bottle opener. or several. i'm assuming some might bring some? i have a bottle opener tied to my cooler as all no-nonsense hardcore alkies do, but no corkscrew.

i realize some are bringing tables. my concern is that there will be a *lot* of dishes, which take up a lot of tables. i can't bring my 6 ft banquet tables, as i don't feel comfortable driving with them. but i have a crappy 3x3 plastic table i'll bring. perhaps 2 if i can dig them up.

i'm flaking right now, and i know i missed stuff. but that's what this little discussion is all about. and forgive me if we already talked about it, but i'm a simple-minded fellow and need a list in one spot.

I bought some cheapie plastic table clothes for the tables at the dollar store..6 of them, I'lll go back and get 6 more.

I prefer my pig without the roll, but if most will prefer sandwiches, there is no one signed up to bring rolls.

I think the paper goods list looks pretty complete, Tommy.

okay, in that case, i'll see if i can get an order for sarcone's or cacia's. unless someone else wants to bring bread.

does anyone else have a really good bread source that would be available?

Steven, pick up like 4 or 5 packages of hamburger rolls or loaves of white bread at costco for the pulled pork, if you can. I dont think anyone is bringing regular whitebread type stuff.

Herb: If you want to pick up some nice bread as well, please do. But some of us like the crappy white trash bread with the pulled pork.

Relax and count backward from 300 as you breath in through your nose bringing your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Then breath out through your mouth dropping your tongue. Continue to breath in and out that way thinking only positive thoughts, eliminating all negativity from your mind. Thinking of nice soft fluffy clouds(or marshmallows) whatever does it for you.

If I bring a six of Heinekin, can I trade with someone for a lesser, crappier beer, or some other beverage?

I'll be bringing some real beer from Philly, from the city's own Yards brewery, some of the best beer made in America. Heineken will be welcome, for those who cant handle the Yards or Victory beers being brought so far.

To Summarize Curdnerd's post/rules:

  • 1. No Dogs.
    2. Making mac & cheese.
    3. Kids Welcome - someone needs to organize some kid activities. Update: Dumpling volunteereed to be Camp Counselor, but parents should still supervise their children. (we're up to 9 kids)
    4. We're going to be using lots of small tents.
    5. The bread-and-cheese shop will be open until at least 5 PM, and people can leave orders in the bakehouse (68F) or ripening room (55F) to keep it cold.
    6. Parking Czar - this person should plan to arrive early. Update: jhlurie and =Mark are being shanghaied into this position with me and Jason. Kim WB will organize the tables & food set up after people have parked.

Other notes:

  • 1. KP Duty - We must completely clean up after ourselves. Everyone bring an extra bag or two and leave with some garbage, please.
    2. Tents (not camping tents, party tents), tables & chairs -- the more the merrier.
    3. The pig is $4 per person (kids count too)
    4. Remember to check the RSVP list for what you offered to bring and confirm with Kim WB via PM.
    5. Label your food: Please label your food if it contains fish or meat of any kind (I should say if it does not obviously contain meat. I don't think the Pig needs to be labeled, but if the collard greens or baked beans have meat, that should be labeled. A label just saying what your dish is would be nice too.
    6. Pray for no rain. If you don't, you are volunteering to sweep out the barn!
    7. Ice:
i don't know how many people are bringing coolers, but i'm sure if everyone just threw a couple of bags of ice in, we'll be fine.
unless there's a need for ice that i'm not thinking of.
Excellent suggestion, tommy. If you are bringing your food in a cooler, take note of above.

8. Recipes - If everyone will please post their recipes on recipeGullet that would be great. Also, if your food contains any common allergens, please bring a tag (like a table tent maybe?) to label your food. Thanks.

9. Leftovers - We're not leaving any for Curdnerd unless he specifically asks for something on the day. So, if you're the type of person who may wish to bring home leftovers of others' food, bring some plastic containers so everyone can take their own (real) dishes home. The disposable Glad® or Ziploc® containers are great.

10. Bring a Serving Implement for your dish.

11. Try to remember to bring a roll of TP per carload of people.

Jeez, this thread is moving fast, so I once again missed to top of a page. Sorry.

the top of whose page?

i don't know if 10 serving spoons is enough. it depends on how many dishes need serving spoons and how many serving spoons people plan on bringing. i just didn't want it to be an oversight, as these things can often be. there's nothing like sitting in a field with 40 dishes, 3 cases of beer, and 4 cases of wine, and realizing there isn't a corkscrew, bottle opener, or enough servering spoons.

If your eGullet settings are set to 40 posts per page, most of the updates I've been posting appear at the top of most of the new pages. All of you who haven't optimized your eGullet settings must think I just post the updates randomly, huh?

The 10 spoons I brought were the extra (in my mind), JIC people forget to bring their own serving implement for their dish.
