You are not mistaken. It is (was) also sold for hand crank ice cream freezers, too. It has unspecified impurities so may not be a good choice for food contact.

I went down another rabbit hole.  Indeed, most rock salt is not to eat.  Morton Ice Cream salt has delicious pictures on the box but the label says "Not For Human Consumption."  Fortunately on amazon I found some culinary rock salt specified for food.

 

This is what I just ordered...  (eG-friendly Amazon.com link)

Is the whole potato covered in salt whilst baking or is it just nested in it?

 

FWIW i do russets in the CSO at 400f steam for an hour and have been happy

A bit uninspred this evening, but it did its job. Chicken breast in spicy breading, plain boiled potatoes and tomatoes. Afrer taking the photograph, I did add some piri-piri sauce for extra heat and lubrication.

 

Followed by the last of my durian.

More from the backlog.

Pan fried egg pasta (home made, leftover) with brie, mushrooms, thyme, eggs.

A salad of lettuce, eggs and a sweet-spicy mustard dressing with lots of pepper and some honey. (worry not, it was mixed for serving)

Wine.
