This was the lunch we had planned last week Covid and the need to vaccinate got in the way!

From one of our all-time favourite restaurants, Lemongrass.

Both of our plates were too similar to necessitate separate photographs.
Summer roll, spring roll, rice, crispy duck and dipping sauces.

I enjoyed some leftovers for dinner.

We already know that @Kerry Beal will be pushing as hard as she can to get needles into arms next week. Sitting in lunch did not seem very likely so Kerry picked up lunch today and brought it to my house.

Both plates look pretty much the same but I decided to share them both anyway. We opted for a selection of Thai appetizers from a favourite restaurant.

There is some crispy calamari, satay chicken, spring roll, summer roll and shrimp roll. My kind of eating.

Once again lunch during the week proved a challenge when weighed against getting a few more needles into a few more arms!  But @Kerry Bealwas determined that lunch with me would happen.
We decided on Turkish food from Rose in the Kitchen again. I checked on the website which clearly showed that they were open every day of the week. This information was there In more than one place.
So I made my selection — lamacun — even if I had to settle for beef instead of lamb!

As lunchtime approached, Kerry began calling the restaurant only to end up in a full voicemail box. Right then perhaps we should have had our suspicions.

Kerry drove over there and was feeling very confident when their open hours on the door said “noon on Sunday”.

Being a little early she went off to do some grocery shopping. When she returned there was still no sign of life in the restaurant!  Damn. We had no Plan B at that point.

Fortunately there are a number of restaurants nearby and we settled for Montforts but our disappointments were still not over.

Kerry ordered two servings of Montfort chicken thinking she would get meals. What we ended up with, however, was chicken with pineapple, two sauces and pita bread. No salad, no rice, none of the usual fixings. Was just not our day for lunch!

The food was perfectly adequate but you can all relate to expecting and hoping for one thing and getting something entirely different.

Somehow I completely forgot to post about lunch on Sunday, June 13. @Kerry Beal and I were planning on lunch but I was a bit under the weather and asked for a rain check. Later in the afternoon Kerry showed up with two pizzas made in her Ooni oven to stash in my freezer for later.

Yesterday, after driving me to get my second Covid shot, she detoured on the way home and picked up lunch from our usual Vietnamese place.

Seems like it is feast or famine as to whether @Kerry Bealand I get to act like the ladies who lunch!  But Kerry had a reason to visit me on Friday and since she was going to arrive around lunch hour she asked if we should “do“ lunch. I was right into it!  I told her to grab whatever. As long as it wasn’t eggplant, beans or foie gras, I would be game to eat it.

And so we had pho.

With rare and well-done beef for me.
The necessary garnishes were served on the side.

Lovely surprise today when @Kerry Bealpicked up lunch from Rose in the Kitchen.

Proved a little challenging language wise until she learned that in Turkish the letter C becomes the letter J for the purpose of pronunciation.

For Kerry—lahmacun and kibbeh.

For me – – lamb chops with rice and roasted pepper and tomato. Oh my God. Heavenly. Hidden beside the container at the upper left is a salad of tomato, cucumber and parsley that perfectly hit the spot.

And as if that was not enough

Dessert — Revani with wonderful orange flavour and rich and chocolaty mozaik.

Lots and lots of leftovers (except for dessert!)

Today @Kerry Bealpicked up lunch for us from a Peruvian restaurant called el inka.

For Kerry some calamari and Ceviche Vegano — Avocado, cucumber, aji amarillo, lime juice, red onions Peruvian corn, sweet potato cilantro*

According to Google el inka means ruler or lord.

*I suspect that the green sauce shown with my plate was actually the sauce that would’ve turned Kerry’s sweet potato into potato cilantro! It was quite delicious when poured over my rice.

** non-regretfully consigned to the compost bin because there were no canaries in the vicinity.

Unfortunately the calamari was almost unnaturally tender but also regretfully flaccid. Not a sign of crispiness or crunch.

I wouldn’t say that @Kerry Bealwas able to carve out an hour or two for lunch today but she did manage to share a working lunch with me. I suggested that we get food from one of our favourite Thai restaurants. Bahn Thai makes the best calamari in Burlington.

We shared everything. Our plates looked alike.

Again at our lovely local Thai restaurant.

There's a boom of more authentic Thai restaurants lately, mostly in Tel Aviv. I didn't sample many, but the few I did were a treat.

Thankfully, we are lucky to have one close to home. With it being a few good years old, I believe that it was one of the 2-3 first restaurants of the like in the country.

Nam Kao - Fried rice balls salad. Lot's of herbs. Sticky rice on the side.

Dumpling with sun-chokes and another ingredient I can't recall. Garlicky chili oil.

Tom kha gai.

Pad Kee Mao - Drunken (rice) noodles. With stir fried vegetables and tofu (tomatoes, chili, cabbage, Thai basil, pickled peppercorns).

Thanks! Defiantly no chicken there.

It was actually labeled simply "tom yum", which as far as I understand is usually coconut-free.

Tom yum has a very different flavor profile than tom kha.  Tom=to boil so is used to describe soups. Kha = galangal, which is the one of the primary flavors in tom kha.  Tom yum is definitely more spicy (tom kha is typically not spicy or just very slightly spicy, but more herbal) as it uses nam prik pao (along with thai chilies) and is much more lime-y.  Traditionally, tom yum is water based (no coconut milk), but lately, there's been a trend in Thailand (and worldwide) to make a creamy version of tom yum not using coconut milk, but usually using evaporated milk as the cream-ifier.
