@Alleguede and I are in the Air Canada lounge again awaiting boarding  to head off to Amsterdam.

 

I have been having great fun over the past couple of weeks posting teasers on Instagram. The blimp is truly taking off.

Fries were on the menu here tonight, till I ran out of energy.  How were the ones in Amsterdam?  P.S. This week Shoprite has a coupon for 20 rolls of toilet paper.

I'm really excited about this.  I haven't been to Amsterdam much, but went to my cousin's wedding which was in Vogel Park.  Beautiful.  My aunt lived in one of those houses lining the canal.  I was born in Zutphen, a town in what the Durch call the Achterhook, (translated as the backhook which I suppose colloquially is the the back end of Holland that hooks into Germany.  Have you ever had Dutch pancakkes?  NOT dutchbabies, but real dutch pancakes. If you haven't, you should try one.  There are restaurants that specialize in them.

There used to be a chain out in Western Canada called the Dutch Panekkoek House. Great big things, rolled up with various fillings. Is that the sort of thing you mean?

I don't recall that we rolled them and filled them but I don't see why not.  I'm familiar with the flat variety with things cooked into them, for example bacon or sliced apples which have been sauted first.  They are large, and cover a dinner plate.  There is no leavening in them, so quite different from what we eat here as pancakes.  As kids, we used to spread jam on them or plain sugar.  Like the chain out west, there are Pannenkkoek restaurants that serve nothing but pancakes and they have a lot of different toppings.

Yeah, that's probably them. They served them with different stuff cooked in, and then you could order 'em rolled (or in retrospect, now that I think about it, just folded) around hash and suchlike.

I vacationed in the Netherlands this past September. Here are the before and after photos of one of our panekkoeken from a restaurant in Lieden (https://www.oudtleyden.nl/). I think this one was apples & cinnamon sugar. Someone else had a savory one with speck & cheese. And another person in our party had a non-pannekkoek entree.

Unless the rules of grammar are different in Dutch, these people have badly abused the apostrophe. I hope they cook better than they write.

 

 

Before the Euro, they used to separate guilders and centen with an apostrophe in the same way we place a period between dollars and cents.  Looks like they are writing their prices the same way as in pre-euro days.

Here in the US we use the decimal point as the radix (integer to fraction) separator. Europe uses the comma.
