Whole Foods Market

Here's a little something I found pretty interesting...

As a great many of you are probably aware, there's been a recent "cucumber recall," with cucumbers from a particular company, "Limited Edition," being contaminated with salmonella.

But what really caught my notice is that, when you read down the list of stores that were carrying these exact same cucumbers, you come across both WalMart and Whole Foods:

http://kfor.com/2015/09/04/cucumbers-sold-at-walmart-whole-foods-recalled-for-salmonella-risk/

What do you guess the cucumbers were selling for at each store?

Doesn't make Whole Foods look so special.

I don't understand why rappers have to hunch over while they stomp around the stage hollering.  It hurts my back to watch them. On the other hand, I've been thinking that perhaps I should start a rap group here at the Old Folks' Home.  Most of us already walk like that.

Too little change too late? The article:

"Whole Foods Likely To Get Cheaper Soon, Offering More Sales"

In an effort to ditch its “whole paycheck” image, the grocery store will likely be offering sales on fresh produce, seafood, meat, prepared foods and more. Don’t expect lower prices across the board. Instead, executives say stores will be “highlighting more limited-time discounts.”

there were several interesting articles about WF in the NYTimes  pre-quarterly report :

\

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/03/business/wall-st-sours-on-whole-foods.html

I enjoy following various markets  aside from where I shop.

I think WF had a revolutionary idea back then, and added a snob or effete appeal, and priced its stuff accordingly

now  ' organic ' is at the MegaloMart

so they need to revamp with this in mind

I do hope there is a WholeFoodsCheaper   near me so I can take a look   ( their budget market )

you can only fool most of the fools for so long.

and I must say, they have done this for longer than I expected.

Snob appeal only lasts so long before the consumer decides they really want to save money when grocery shopping. That was why the Haggen Grocery chain went belly up when they moved into the old Von's/Albertson's grocery stores in my area. Haggen's prices were far too expensive (didn't someone in the company do any area-grocery-pricing-research before buying all the stores? Duh!). Customers stayed away in droves and now the Haggen chain is in bankruptcy and suing Albertson's. Good luck with that, Haggen!

""  Snob appeal only lasts so long ""

true.  but I give WF credit for making an ambiance in the stores especially attractive to 'snobs' and 'effetes' Even if you were not one,  you did feel

different in a WF store.

but they destroyed many local Organic-ish chains in their desire to dominate.

in my area there was a chain called  Bread & Circus.   a very nice set of stores, with an entire double isle of 'bulk' ingredients

Organic and Not.  that's gone and missed by many.

WF's downfall is simple :  Corporate Greed

a common problem these days.

The WF sort of in my area is about to get a run for its money. A big Wegmans just opened. The prices seem a bit better...selection is better...meat and fish seem equivalent and perhaps cheaper.  The nearby Fresh Market is doomed, I think.

I lived in UpState NY for a year.  there was a Wagmans that I could walk to   4 minutes  I liked the store.

I did have other things on my mind, like sleep .....

but there is a new Wags two towns over, toward BOS

they send me a slick flyer.  it might be fine in that area, because as you get closer to BOS, the real estate  ( i.e. the $$$ / foot print ) goes way up

so they might be fine there.

Im a big Fan of Market Basket.    they had issues with the various cousins that owned it

it got resolved.

very very good prices, exceptionally  friendly work staff.

no sirloin flap meat at 3.99, cut to order  i.e. whole pieces.

that's gone to 5.99

I sure wish i had a Costco Friend

I have an unfortunate bias against WF based upon the people who I know who do shop there (my circle of friends covers a lot of California).I have never been inside a Whole Foods. None near me.  Of course I've never set foot inside a Haggen store either.  I didn't even get that they were a supermarket for a while. Having signage that looks like an upscale clothing store did not communicate to me "come buy groceries here." Here in southern California I have choices on top of choices as to where to buy groceries. I even have the luxury of choosing which specific store within a chain I want to go to. That last one is important to me because of uneven management from store to store.

I agree with this. The Von's down the street from where I live is smaller and doesn't have the atmosphere or square footage of another Von's that I usually give my business.

I just wish more grocery options would open in town. I'd give anything for an H.E.B. to open here like they have in Texas.

We've also been told that two of the Albertson's that closed here (that Haggen bought) will be re-opening as Albertson's. Apparently, opening them again won't push them into the "We're a monopoly" territory which is why they closed so many Von's/Albertson's in the first place.

I wonder what the "365" stores will be like? Ghetto versions of Whole Foods? Or just stripped down versions?
