Thanks for a fun read. Never acquired a taste for peanut butter. Guessing you may need to be exposed to it very early in life or perhaps I just need to find the right brand!

When I enlarged the picture of the traditional it did not look smooth, although admittedly it is hard to tell in the jar.  I wish them success in their venture.  I should think their industry would be a hard nut to crack.

The honey vanilla seems smooth to me (the brown sugar cinnamon does not, which is due to the graininess of the brown sugar, which is a reason I don't like it). You can email them and ask for a sample and they'd likely ship you one. They have sample jars they send to prospective retailers.

I have walked a long peanut butter road.  I would prefer to like a natural product and like many of us, I just don't.  It's too dry and grainy.

 

In my hippy years, I always ground my own at the "health food store".  I've done the Smuckers thing with the brown gingham top.  I try to keep to Skippy Natural, if I buy it.  I don't usually buy it because I like to sit in front of the TV with a big peanut butter lollipop on a spoon.  And repeat.  And repeat.  If you know what I mean.

 

The shameful truth is this:  my mother raised us on Peter Pan Smooth.  I love Peter Pan Smooth.  I love it on Ritz crackers.  I love it in a fluffer nutter.  I love it in a lollypop.  I love it in peanut butter cookies with the criss-cross top.

 

And I never buy it, because peanut butter is one of those things I can't control myself around.  Probably because of the sugar.  That being said, I want to try the Steen's Cane Syrup thang.

This is more about the label than what's inside the jar but I'll put it here anyway: 

Jif is rolling out a limited-edition peanut butter to settle the debate over the pronunciation of 'GIF' once and for all.

 

I didn't realize there was ever a debate about this but if anything can be settled once and for all with a jar of peanut butter, I'm all for it!

From the photos of the item on Amazon (currently unavailable for purchase), it looks like the promotional item might indeed have both Gif and Jif  on the labels.  One of the Amazon images is a little video that appears to show a jar turning around to show both.

Edited to add:  it also includes the text, "Limited edition jar with double-sided JIF/GIF label."

Jif and its natural-brand counterpart Adams have recently been pitching "dark roast" peanut butter, with a darker hue (which turned out to be due, at least in part, to molasses) and an allegedly deeper peanut flavor.

I bought a jar for curiosity's sake, and found it to be...peanut butter. It did taste slightly more peanutty and less sweet than my previous jar, but that wasn't Jif so it isn't a direct comparison.

The only Jif I've come across is this - now officially called Cif in the UK although most people still call it Jif. It is still Jif in many territories. Perhaps they should have done some more brand name research.

I always have peanut butter in the house since it is a good snack (on Wasa) for my husband. He actually prefers smooth because he likes the chunky style too much and will (over) eat with a spoon. I've tried some of the natural or specialty varieties and he's happiest with good old Skippy. I have found it to be so unbearably sweet...I just found the variety with no sugar added and it's perfect, it actually tastes like peanuts now.
