Cookbooks – How Many Do You Own? (Part 3)

I have no idea how many cookbooks I have, but they currently fill one floor-to-ceiling bookshelf in the kitchen and most of one in the living room. I like to collect cookbooks from places that I visit, those of historical interest, and just plain odd ones. My sons find my collection very humorous for I never actually cook from my cookbooks. I have a slight anti-authoritarian quirk that does not allow me to follow directions, and I generally just make stuff up after comparing similar recipes from various sources.

To Marmish: I'd really be interested in knowing where that bookstore in Forest Park is. I hang out at the Frugal Muse in Darien (75th and Lemont) now and then -- nice collection of used cookbooks there, too.

Madison street makes for a nice afternoon of shopping. Most antique type shops are closed Mondays.

I have one, possibly two to add.

Yesterday I received The Big Book of Soups and Stews by Maryana Collstedt. It's a little hot to start trying out a lot of recipes (the chilled soup section is a little small) but I am ready for cold weather!

If drink books count then I have another one to add. I picked up The Little Book of Vodka Cocktails by Hamlyn at the Kitchen Etc. clearance.

:shock: Sadly, I must amend my last post. I have 1 cookbook. It was a gift to me yesterday from a dear friend who said it "was the start of a new collection". My house burned on Wed, Aug 11, and the collection of 30 years is no more. Sigh... Thank the Godess no one (i include the dog in that) was hurt badly. A friend got blistered in a largish area, but will heal. Think good thoughts for me, please! :huh:

judiu, I am so sorry. I share your loss and your relief that no one was badly hurt (I too include the dog). Please, let me know if I can give you some books to rebuild the collection. I certainly have some to spare.

I picked up 5 more on vacation.

It is good to be a BBQ Judge.  And now it is even gooder to be a Steak Cookoff Association Judge.  Life just got even better.  Woo Hoo!!!

Judiu, what terrible news! My thoughts and best wishes are with you, too. And may your collection rise again like a phoenix!

I too am sorry to hear of your tremendous loss.

An idea just occured as I was hitting the reply button:

Judiu's collection would definitely "rise again like the pheonix" if some of us who have duplicate cookbooks could send them to judie.

Judiu, are there any particular titles you desperately need? I may not have any that you lost, but this may be a good way to start new passions? :laugh:

A special one more for me, Maggie. Yesterday's sad news had me, like so many others, at the bookshelves visiting the well-thumbed volumes of Julia's brilliance and wisdom. I realized I had never gotten around to acquiring The Way to Cook. Done and done.

Another way she'll be with me forever.

Hey, can I send you a cookbook? I've got fifty something. I like them all, and I'm sure I could find something to part with that you'd like to.

Could you use a newer edition of Joy of Cooking? I love my first volume, and find that I just don't use the newer one as much. (It's the 1997 edition. The cover has some very slight marks on it, but the insides are pretty pristine.)

What are your tastes?

Tell here, and PM or e-mail me with a snailmail address and I'll find something to help you start back your collection.

I was thinking this too. I have at least two duplicates in need of good homes: Madame Maigret and... oh damn, now I can't remember what the other one was - maybe the Davidson Dumas on Food? But actually I should do some digging, because I'm pretty sure there are more than two - especially as I now own my mother's collection as well as my own. She wasn't a big collector, but there is certainly some overlap. Should we branch off into a separate thread for this? (I bet I have at least four different editions of The Joy of Coooking... :wink: )

Sorry, Lisa! Senior moment and all...

Two more books: a Civil War Cookbook because one of my ancestors was a baker in the Union Army. (Had relatives on both sides, actually.)

Number 2, my daughter brought me a church cookbook back from Deer Isle, Maine, edited by my son-in-law's cousin. Also brought me a lobster!

I should have my head examined.

I just ordered the Alain Ducasse's Spoon book (the big one)

What normal person would spend $181 on a cookbook, much less order it from france, the best price. Then again, comparing what might be construed as normal to my excentricities, it just fits. I can't wait for it to arrive.

I picked up a couple more sale books: Commander's Kitchen and a Smithsonian-published book on sustainable seafood.

And while on vacation I simply had to buy The Rocky Mountain Gourmet Cookbook.

Oh, and did I mention Wolfert's Slow Mediterranean Cooking?

      I just received a copy of "The Cook's Book - Concise Edition" edited by Jill Norman, and now I'm curious, what's the difference to the full edition? Supposedly it has 648 pages compared to 496 in this edition, and it appears to be much larger in size if the info on us.dk.com is correct. Other than that I can't find any info what the difference might be. It's a neat book with lots of photos about techniques etc, and lots of recipes. As with any DK book production values are high.
      If the contents are the same, I'm happy with the smaller version, but I'd really like to know what I might be missing on those 150 or so pages. If it's just filler, I don't care. If it's some fantastic recipes, I do care....
      Anybody here know both editions? Google was so far of no help. Lots of the full edition are to be had used as well, I'd be happy giving this one as a gift and ordering the full edition, if it's worth it.
