Dinner! 2005

Dear Alinka,

It may be 'simple' (though the care with which it has been made - the moellet eggs; the beautifully marked toast - suggests a great deal of detailed care), but the two shots are SO magnificent that I'm drooling over this as much as I have over any more complicated meal in this thread - and that's a lot of dinners! You're very talented. Keep posting!

Thanks! What's "moellet eggs"? I just put together a quick sandwich of whatever was in the fridge: boiled egg, tomato, salami, goat cheese, olives, herbs. And the marks - this is why I loooove my panini press. Recently, I almost don't cook any more - simple food like mozzarella and tomatoes, greek salad, figs and goat cheese is so good. Gourmande gave me a great idea what to do with the beets I have in the fridge - roast them and eat with goat cheese. I look forward to that already.

By the way, I've a question. Someone mentioned they had goat cheese and honey for dessert. Are they mixed, or is honey drizzled over the cheese?

After gawking at Ann_T's gorgeous pies, Chufi's crunchy warm pizzas that smell deliciously of bread, MobyP's buttery looking short rib ravioli (and I'm not even sure what that means), percyn's fancy layered salad, and everybody else's carefully prepared, beautiful dinners, here I am with my simple sandwich (I'm saving my energy for the pasta party I am hosting on Saturday )

Wow, everyone is cooking such great stuff, I feel so...inadequate. But I'll steel up my courage and post as a dinner "underachiever":

last night:

sauteed chicken breasts with bacon, artichoke hearts, capers and lemon butter (a riff off a *gasp* macaroni grill dish)

baked potatoes

fresh green beans

After fighting the zotob virus for the past 2 weeks and eating crap take out or pre-packaged foods I've finally had a chance to throw together a couple of dinners.

Friday night, grilled marinated (EVOO, salt and pepper) lamb sirloin cut steaks, homemade mint sauce, tomato green bean salad (turkish style), and jasmine rice cooked with sauteed purple onion, garlic, ginger and finely chopped mushrooms.

Saturday night dinner out in Canmore, AB.

Sunday night, left over black bean soup (made by SO earlier last week) and rice from Friday night.

Monday night home made pizza with anchovy/garlic tomato sauce, proscuito di parma, mushrooms and some very nice mozzerella from the Italian deli down the street.

Hello Everyone

I am relatively new to eGullet and would just like to say how much fun I have had reading about all your dinners and drooling over all your photos. I am currently a medical student in my final year, and whilst I do cook proper food for myself every day, and even find the time to get out recipe books and work thru them, rarely do I have the necessary time and incentive to plate up and photograph my meals the way you folks do. Having said that, every time I see your photos, I feel like I'd really like to...anyhow, reading your posts and seeing your lovely photos provides me with the best form of escapism I've found and an extra-ordinarily pertinent reason to postponse revision for exams...

Thank you all...I shall join your ranks as soon as time (10months to go...altho realistically, things are likely to get a lot worse before they get better!) permits.

Cheerio...

Raj

PS my dinner was a pork chop (outdoor reared, organic, although I don't know which breed) marinated in garlic, EVOO and rosemary, sealed on the griddle and finished in the oven, served with spinach with a scratch of nutmeg and mashed potatoes following heston blumenthal's guidelines - they took longer than usual, but there is a noticeable difference, i assure you all! well worth a go should you have the appropriate thermometer!

Am feeling a bit under the weather right now, and last night had my equivalent of chicken soup: bun xao with chicken.

I really should take pictures. It has been a profusion of sweet corn (best ever at the stand on the south side of US highway 10 right on the city limits of Elk River and Ramsey, MN, close to Furniture and Things), green beans, and tomatoes. Tonight, I humored my family and cooked a mess of bacon so we could suppliment the corn and beans with BLT's. Also, we have been privy to a weekly lug of Colorado peaches, which we eat, whole, on the deck. Elbows perched on the railings, juices dripping down onto my yard.

I could eat like this every month of the year.

I have friends who are thinking ahead to braising. I, myself, love those meals best where all sorts of juices, be they peach, tomato, butter, hamburger on the grill, run down ones arms and stain one's t-shirt, rather than that indoor chopping and oven stuff.

We had a late night at work last night, so dinner was from Culver's -- we each had a butter bacon burger with cheese curds. And we shared a order of cheesefries.

There's a yummy in my tummy.

The digicam is broken so no pics :(. We had crab sandwiches with homemade chipotle mayo and ate farm-fresh tomatoes (given to us by a kind neighbour) with salt, pepper and olive oil. Oh, we also had some prawns left over from sunday's paella feast. So we had fried prawns on the side too!

gourmande, thanks for the toon, Herman has always been a giggle. My avatar was taken by my brother in Laos. He had aspirations of professional photography till he found out he couldn't make a living at it.

Dinner Tuesday night, orricetta (sp) pasta (the earlobe shaped ones), tossed in well browned pancetta with EVOO, garlic, red chili, anchovy fillets, black pepper, artichoke hearts, pine nuts and a little pasta water. Served this up with an extra splash of EVOO and parmigano.

I wanted to take a photo but my SO said it was weird and I shouldn't "get into that sort of thing". I'm going to have to start clanedestine food photography if I'm ever to get anything up here.

Cab Burger:

gallery_28832_1138_23777.jpg

I saw people on this board talking about a burger made with minced shallots reduced in some red wine, so I figured I'd give it a go... This is quite a decent burger, if you like your burger well done. I intentionally cooked it well done, because it's supposed to stay moist, even if well done. Well, it definitely stayed moist.

(And uh, my foodporn sucks, so I'm kinda proud of that picture... Purdy, ain't it?)

I really must learn how to upload photos....anyway, here's the menu from last night's French cafe feast. I cooked my own birthday dinner for some foodie friends and my somewhat non-foodie family. Thankfully it was enjoyed by all!

Gougeres (hot cheese puffs)

Various pates with olives, cornichons

Vichyssoise (Julia Child's recipe)

Goat cheese tart

Frisee aux Lardons (curly endive with hot bacon dressing and a poached egg on top...the surprise hit of the night!)

Cheese platter

Chocoate-Orange Mousse (this made everyone swoon...a Barefoot Contessa recipe)

Lemon bars (from Cook's Illustrated -- the best lemon bars ever!)

We had Kir Royales to start, a lovely Pinot Gris in the middle, and hot coffee at the end. We all collapsed on the sofa afterwards!

Yes, that photo does look mighty fine! I'm glad you tried a Cabernet Burger, and liked it. If I recall, it took some care not to overcook these burgers, so that would be an added note for someone who, like us, does not prefer them well done.

Life is short; eat the cheese course first.

Wow, such wonderful meals. Alinka great sandwich and what a wonderful picture too. This thread is responsible for many cravings. I would love a hamburger. And you should be proud of that picture Grub.

We had an easy pasta dish last night. Clams steamed with garlic, onions, white wine, chicken broth, chopped tomatoes and lots of fresh basil. Served over Linguine.
