I think I have found a new favorite wasabi-flavored snack.

gallery_2_4_1097353857.jpg

The Romaji transliteration on the US-importer applied sticky label on the back of the package says "DAIKO NORITEN WASABI AJI". I bought a  small bag of these onsale for $1.60 a package at Mitsuwa marketplace -- now I want to run out and buy a case of them, they are so addictive.

......

I love these too, but they are a major hit to the system. My first bag I practically inhaled in minutes, but payed for it in the form of salt headache and dizzyness. Now I make a bag last a few days to keep that from happening.

Last okashi eaten: Black Black chewing gum. Hm, maybe that doesn't count.

morinaga sells their version of marie biscuits...

<center><img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041123marie.jpg"></center>

i used a box of them, broken up, to make a kind of cake/brownie/fudge (it defies categorization, actually) dessert featured in renees <a href="http://www.shiokadelicious.com/shiokadelicious/">shiokadelicious!</a> blog. the bruneian treat is called <a href="http://www.shiokadelicious.com/shiokadelicious/2004/11/selamat_hari_ra.html"> <i>kek batik</i></a>.

<center>khong guan small maries (left), and morinaga maries (right)

<img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041123marie2.jpg"></center>

<center>the fudgy batter

<img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041123marie3.jpg"></center>

<center>adding in the broken maries

<img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041123marie4.jpg"></center>

<center>chilled and set kek batik, sliced open to show the maries

<img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041123marie5.jpg"></center>

the marie biscuits are really pretty tasty on their own right with coffee or tea.

Jason is right about those ume pretz... they're very weird tasting. I love ume, but those ume pretz have an odd anise flavor going, which is not something I'm used to with ume.

I also picked up some Chocolat Orange Pocky... very good.

Has anyone else tried Calbee Vegetable Fries yet?

gallery_18820_2_1106348368.jpg

Our whole family has been hooked on these for quite some time now. It's frightening how quickly an entire bag can disappear before you're even aware of it. Light, crispy, not greasy and just the right amount of salt.

Disappointingly, though, I've not been able to find a single box of Roasted Corn Pretz for months.

New Okashi discovered at the "recent import" section of the grocery store:

Snacks.jpg

(L-R):

Hokkaido kabocha pretzels by Kabaya: does this mean the Kabocha is grown in Hokkaido? These were good, but the kabocha flavor was very light and I really had to concentrate to find it.

Mont Blanc flavored sitcks by Kabaya (like Pocky, but a different company). These were yummy, they mostly had a mocha flavor to them - Im not sure exactly what the chestnut flavor is supposed to taste like.

Porute Creamy Marron, by Meiji: My favorite of the three. They are covered with a light chocolate coating and a chestnut (Marron) flavored- inside with texture similar to white chocolate....What is "porute"?

I haven't had those for years! my kids used to love them...

The only ones I have had are the middle ones and found them lacking in flavor...

Yes Hokkaido is very famous for their kabocha and as to porute, it sounds more French than English.....

The cousin of MeltyKiss.....MeltyBlend

Similar to MeltyKiss in texture, only instead of Matcha flavor, a very slight coffee flavor, with savory smooth chocolate....yum!

....How come we have MeltyBlend here but not MeltyKiss???

A friend of mine, who knows that I am always on the lookout for new and interesting products, brought me this the other day

Mousse Pocky, azuki flavor

this was pretty gross, I love azuki but this was very starch-y tatsing and overly sweet....

taking a look at their homepage:

http://www.glico.co.jp/pocky/lineup/index.htm

it looks like they have a matcha one as well in the mousse series

I tried the azuki as well as the matcha kind a couple of weeks ago, and I was really disappointed. I love anko but the azuki kind had a really odd earthy taste. The matcha pocky tasted more of honey than of matcha, to me. I definitely prefer the kit-kat, that was really yummy - hmm I think I'll have to go get another one from the conbini soon...

origamicrane, I saw a Valentine's Day gift pack the other day for the exam-sitting boyfriend...a Kit Kat bar packed with a red pentagonal mug with a Kit Kat logo on it and a sachet of milk and coffee mix...big logo on the box saying "Do your best, exam candidate!"

 Actually the reason I remember it in such detail is that I bought one for my Kit Kat loving husband as a Valentine's Day present, and have it hidden in the cupboard next to my computer...

The latest Kit Kat I've seen has been the passionfruit one!

Thanks for warning me from the matcha one! I think I will spend my money on the matcha kit kat! I think I am becoming adicted.....

The flavor on that azuki one really was odd, it was like they took all the bad things about azuki and anko and emphasized them  my kids liked it though....

lately i have been obsessed with <a href="http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=%E3%81%93%E3%81%A4%E3%81%B6%E3%81%A3%E3%81%93&btnG=Search">kotsubukko</a>. i cant eat enough!

i am also fond of soft salad and hoshii tabeyo. why do all these products seem to be aimed at children? pocky, melty-x, etc dont seem to have large happy faces plastered all over their packaging and seem more 'adult'.

i guess i just have childish tastes.

also, is kotsubukko considered to be sembei?

According to the manufacturer's website, it is classified into the category of Arare/Okaki.

As I mentioned somewhere, sembei are made from regular rice whereas arare and okaki are made from glutinous rice.

I am still searching for those passion fruit flavored Kit Kats....

I just ran across this great site (Japanese only) that show how the snack flavors vary from region to region. Lots of pictures!

In a different thread I talked about these wonderful kurozato (raw "black" sugar) caramels (right)

gallery_6134_184_1096973390.jpg

A couple days ago I found matcha flavored ones

gallery_6134_549_18846.jpg

The matcha ones are quite good but I think I prefer the kurozato ones.

I also found the passion fruit kit kats and they were actually quite good, I will definitely buy them again.

A new store opened up nearby, and I came home with an armful of snacks. One of my favorites is Sonomama Iwashi, which are called fish crackers, but seem to be more fish than cracker, and are crisp and sweet with sugar and sesame and a touch of red pepper. Now you see them, now you don't.

I also got Fried Chili, which is either Japanese or Korean. The label is not very instructive. It has sliced hot peppers fried until crunchy like potato chips, and mixed with peanuts, sesame seeds, and cumin. Oh my gosh, it's good!
