Heading to Atlantic City - Ideas for Where to Eat?

So @Alleguede and I are heading to Atlantic City for the Philly Candy show in a couple of weeks and I anticipate we will need to find a few meals. I found a few old threads but I'm hoping to get some up to date suggestions. A variety would be good - probably not a lot of fine dining unless there is someplace that we simply should not miss.

 

Thoughts?

There's a lot of casino dining...not to be confused with fine dining in AC. Knife and Fork (if its still there) is an old standby.

I seem to recall salt water taffy is associated with the place - any other iconic foods?

There's a hoagie shop that one is supposed to rave about. But how praise-worthy can a sandwich be?

 

Some of the salt water taffy places in Ocean City ( a little bit South) let you watch the machines making them; which is god for 10 minutes of mindless staring.

I know in Vegas we had subs I loved - I'm not a sub fan - so might be worth checking out.

Its called White House Subs.

IIRC the place will put mayo on a hoagie...which would get you thrown out of a few places in Philly.

White House subs gets a lot of mentions, but if I had the chance my first stop would be Pancho's:

The knife and Fork is still there, and is now run by the family that has Dock's Oyster House.  Docks has been around for years and is considered one of the best seafood houses.  You might also check out Luke Palladino. One of his restaurants is in Linwood and highly regarded.  Chef Vola's is considered the best Italian restaurant from what I've read and makes for fun reading even if you don't eat there.  There are lots of Pho places popping up should you decide you want Pho.

Disclaimer: I have only eaten out once in the past 5 years.  It was last Spring while my kitchen was being rewired. I did not enjoy it.  Worse service I've had in the past ten years.

Note:Don't bother with anything in Brigantine, there's nothing there. I should know, I live there.  Should you through some mischance end up in Brigantine make a U turn, the boulevard is the  only one way in and out.

While the candy show is going on at the convention center, the Miss American Pageant will be doing on at Convention Hall on the boardwalk on the 11th through the 13 which may complicate things for you.

I have eaten at this Vietnamese restaurant which isn't too far from the main casino area (ie, you won't step on crack vials)

Maybe this has been too long of a day for me, but I don't follow.  Your previous post clearly wasn't implying that there is a problem with using mayo instead of miracle whip, but rather that a proper hoagie should be made with oil (certainly an Italian hoagie). 

 

Don't even get me started on the fact that for some reason people in every other region seem to think a Philly cheese steak is made with bell peppers.  Also, isn't "Philly" cheese steak redundant?  Is there any other kind?

Miracle Whip is deplorable in any usage other than my mother's devilled eggs.

 

Indeed native cheesesteaks do not involve peppers. Alien chefs add all kinds of Italian-ish crap to a cheesesteak.

 

Absolutely right, Philly cheesesteak is redundant and a implies a bad steak to come.

When NJLA convention was held in AC John and I would go to The Irish Pub as it was close to the venue. 

 

Brigantine is just north of AC BUT if you are a birder it is a place to check out.

Just my 2 cents - a cold Italian sub is the food of the gods and NJ is the place to get one.

New Jersey Monthly in the last year have recommended the following places in AC:

Gordon Ramsey Pub and Grill in Caesars

Girasole

Knife and Fork Inn

 

any chance you have some time to head a bit outside of AC or are you on a tight schedule?

We arrive Philly on Sat am - drive up - need to set up our booth before 4 - so we'd have the rest of Saturday. Show is Sun, Mon, Tues - so we have the evenings.

about 45 minutes south is a place called Exit 0 Cookhouse in West Cape May or Red Store in Cape May Point.  Two new places that are quite good.  You might be able to check out Cape May Honey Company   or several of the wineries in the area.   

 

What ever you decide can't wait to hear your adventures.......and at least you will have a rental you won't have to retrieve if anything goes bad.....

 

I'd suggest some places in Wildwood Crest but Saturdays can be a bit problematic ... especially in September when it is crowded.

It would be way out of your way headed down to Atlantic City from Philly.  Philly is abour 47 miles east of Philly, and almost in a straight line from Philly.  Wildwood is a shore resort about 38 miles south of Atlantic City..  Atlantic City is on Absecon Island,. It takes up the north end of the island. Also on Absecon island  are  three more communities, in the following order Ventnor, Margate, Longport.  There are lots of interesting sounding restaurants in Margate.  If I lived in Margate I would have probably eaten out more often than once in 5 years.  If you google "Margate Restaurants you will find a lot of good restaurants.  If you want to go to a casino, The Borgata seems to get the best marks for food. It is one of the Marina casinos along with Golden Nugget and Harrahs.

• ...and if you go to Wildwood you might as well go to Cape May. There are many nice places to eat there. I've mentioned some in the "South Jersey" dining thread.
• I've enjoyed Luke Palladino in Linwood in the past. (I used to go to Linwood fairly frequently in the past, when I lived in NJ, and head over to AC afterwards not infrequently)
• BTW you mean drive DOWN to AC from Philly, a straight SE-direction shot down the AC Expressway. P.s. The ACE is pretty heavy going on Saturday.
• I've also liked Dock's Oyster House before, but it may count as "fine dining" (and a chain, as well), something you mentioned you weren't too keen on.
• The Casino restaurants are decent by-and-large, but are not exactly the cheapest, of course.
• Why not pull up Googlemaps and just look for restaurants around the casinos/convention center - the likely-sounding ones can't be all bad.
• As mentioned above, various "ethnic" places are there too but perhaps you get enough of them in the GTA.
• Consider just strolling along the Boardwalk - you can get your saltwater taffy, and munch on subs and hoagies and other casual food; many of the places aren't bad at all! And you get to take in the Human Tapestry there. I've certainly enjoyed doing the same. But one or another of you & Co. might disapprove of such unrefined food? 
• I assume you will be heading back to Philly and flying home to TO after the convention ends. Too bad. Going down to Cape May, noodling around, taking the ferry over to Lewes and driving down the DE shore and grazing and whatnot in the beach resorts all along the way (from Rehoboth Beach DE to Ocean City MD) is quite pleasant.
