if one substitutes "liver wurst" for spam - search engines produce near identical hate posts.

I've certainly had it. It was a regular food substitute when was a kid. Never ate it again after leaving home to go to university almost 55 years ago! Disgusting muck.

Liverwurst, I love.

The Hormel co. would have you believe that Spam is a contraction for Spiced Ham. Haters will tell you it stands for Specially Processed American Meat or Specially Processed Animal Meat. In any case it's the butt of jokes and gets more hate mail that probably any other processed food. The typeface, ITC Souvenir Bold, also is the most hated typeface on the planet. Paul Theroux surmised that Spam became popular when eating human flesh went out of favor. I apologize to all those Spam fans for bringing that up.

I grew up making fun of Spam but never tasting it. When curiosity got the better of me I tried it. One bite was enough. I'm in the Theroux camp. My husband had it as a kid, but he grew up to be a book designer and then he couldn't get past the typeface, let alone the taste.

I had two cans of SPAM 25 % less salt .

recent ( compared to the Basement Archives ) purchase @ MarketBasket for unknown reasons

well, why not use one can .

I liked the idea of SPAM Dogs.

thank you @Margaret Pilgrim

and for me supermarket hot dogs all have

similar nutritional concerns

took one can ( forgot how pink this stuff is )

and in the 12 " fond-less , after a dusting off :

I cut the tranche into what I though was thin-ish w some ' fill '

they all fit into the Pan !  side one

IMG_2561.thumb.jpg.5610032806d0cda401a889290c45a1dc.jpg

flipped

IMG_2565.thumb.jpg.31d6dbf72a4b0359b75d1bc1392cce55.jpg

re=flipped , for good measure

took them to , let them cool , and refrigerated them

' for later '

I diced one up , cold , and added it to my BeanwBacon soup + amendments

it was fine .  Tj's had a chicken andouille sausage that I used to use , crisped up

in a smaller fond-less .   of course , they D/C's it.

I do not think one would seek out SPAM

but it might wiser something to you , as it did @MarketBasket to me

after all , the stuff is near the end cap , with other canned mystery items

when I make my first left turn @ MB.

Gaah. We ate Spam sometimes when I was growing up. Like liuzhou, I hated it. Like liuzhou, I haven't touched it since. That said, there have been a few other things my mother loved that I have come to appreciate in my later years. If someone were to feed me Spam I'd be willing to try it. I don't expect ever to initiate the experience, though.

I decided to look into my * currently ) last can of SPAM

25 % less salt version

I used to get Tj's chicken sausage ( andouille )   and slice that up

brown until crispy , and use in soups , and salads .

Tj's no longer carry that version , and the other blends didn't make an

effective appeal for BeanwBacon soup etc.

the idea was :     SPAM is spam for sure   and ground up factory chicken is ' processed '

maybe the salt load ( a major ' processed '  sin )  .

the Tj's chicken sausage had about 2,000  mg /pack

and SPAM reduced  3.500 mg / can

Agra-Con made both packages exactly the same weight : 12 0z

and I thank them , as i was beginning to loose interest in the project.

too bad .  I was getting the hang of a single 12 " Fondless pan for one can .

chill , and use later .

Have you considered Taylor Pork roll?

Far superior to SPAM.

Spam here costs about $12. That comes pretty darn close.

About the size of 3 Spams, though.  And far better.

@rotuts you can get smaller tranches at amazon too

This pack of eight 6 oz units (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) is $47.99 ($16/lb) but ships "free." Each 6 oz pack contains 8 slices.

That $18 one-pound roll carries a $28.99 shipping fee.

What?  No photos

I checked all the references they had on the internet and they had no photos. I think the one that Michael and I stumbled into must have been the very first one that they had. As I remember it, the contestants had a lot more than two cans of spam and more than 15 minutes to complete their sculptures. I remember one contestant made an almost recognizable bust of Abraham Lincoln and another had a pretty passable pig. The mess I remember had to have been more than two cans of spam.
