Has anyone been to The Market at Morris Plains? It's on Sat and has been runiing for two weeks. A close market on Sat is great for me.

rosie, take those long legs of yours down bloomfield ave into bloomfield. you'll see signs for lackawanna on your right. not sure what street it is, but i think you take a right onto washington or glenwood. again, there will be signs for the train station. rail paul probably has better directions, as he knows something about everything.

Next question.  It's supposed to rain like anything.  The other vendor is out in any weather.  What do I do?  I'll have big tupperware type things, but how long do I stand in the rain?  Canopy's a tad small.  Actually, I'll have no car so will have to stand there until someone picks me up!

Wear a raincoat. Bring a clear plastic tarp (a cheap shower curtain liner would be good) to keep the food & money dry. Bring a change of clothes packed in a ziploc bag or tupperware, so that you won't catch a chill from the air conditioned car ride home. If the people don't show (except for the eGullet people who will try to get there as early as possible, right?), sell to the restaurants or crash a Friday Farmers Market!

Rosie -

I presume you are proceeding east on Bloomfield Avenue from Montclair.

East on Bloomfield, remain on the Avenue, pass Ridgewood Avenue Glen Ridge, down the hill, past the last extant Arthur Treacher's and the Bottle King, past the traffic light for State Street. You're still on Bloomfield Ave

The next traffic light is Washington, as Tommy noted. There's a sign for NJ Transit Rail on a post. Turn right onto Washington, bear left at T, and follow the road as it winds around a parking lot. The station is ahead up on an embankment. Parking is available on the street in front of the station.

The market is in a parking lot directly opposite the station, between the station and Bloomfield Avenue. The trip should take you under ten minutes from the area of Blue Sky. If for some reason you miss the turn for Washington, the next right should also get you to the market.

If you run a mapquest search for "Lackawanna Plaza, Bloomfield NJ" the location is correctly marked. However, the railroad tracks are not indicated. Curiously, the now inactive tracks of the former Erie line on the opposite side of town are marked.

All he has to do is reserve the pie and show up. You take your chances if you want to play it by ear.

I've got a pie for tommy, pao for Rachel and Paul, pie for Rosie? Paul, in case I get online tomorrow, which is doubtful, large or small pao? Anyone else? Maybe in time I'll post a phone # for last minute reservations.

I'm also going to try to do anadama bread. What a panic.

Going into NY today and don't think I will make it.  :sad:

well, if anyone else goes, tell elyse that i'm going to try to get there for pie, but can't promise. it's looking pretty good right now, though.

Well I am happy to report that I completely sold out today (by...6?). Except for a pao de queijo, but still! I didn't even have anything to take to the local cafe. I did stop in though to tell them not to expect cookies, and they told me to bake extra next week so they can buy it. Nice to hear.

Last Thursday morning, I went to the Nyack Farmers Market. There has been a lot of discussion about the decline of, and disappointment in many of the farmers markets. FG has also talked about the provenance issue.

This is a wonderful market, large, with about 10 stands. The best one is Andrychuk Produce, where EVERYTHING at the stand is grown on his farm. No provenance issue. (FG take note!) Wonderful lettuce, tomatoes, kirby cukes, carrots, corn, onions, potatoes, and other veggies. The owner swears that everything is picked by himself, his children, a couple of workers, and his sister. The stuff is GREAT!! Lettuce is covered with dirt, but it is a "clean" dirt :smile: that lets you know it was just picked.

There is also a stand called Baker's Wife, where they have most of the Balthazar Breads and rolls for 25% cheaper than you can buy them at Balthazar in Englewood!! A Pickles from the Barrel place, an organic little farm, Buffalo Mozzarella cheese stand, a flower stand, a stand with homemade jellies and jams, another stand with veggies and fruits, but not necessarily home grown, and there was one place giving free 1/2 cobs of roasted corn hot off the grill!!

This is definitely the best farmers market in the area, and make sure you go to Andrychuk for all the home grown stuff. Balthazar Breads are a bargain as well. The market is open Thursdays from 9AM to 2PM, on Main Street behind the Helen Hayes Theater.
