2003 Farmer's Market Schedule

Recommended Posts

Something has been bugging me.  Last week I went to a Farmer's Market and bought some peaches , cherries, and other vegetables.  I took two peaches to work yesterday and they had those tiny stickers on them <California peaches + a number>.  This kind of caught me off guard. I would have thought that the produce would have been " Jersey fresh" .  What 's do stop someone from going to Shop Rite and buying produce and selling it at one of these markets?

I believe that the Farmer's Market coordinator is supposed to make sure that the farmer grows his own stuff. However, I have been to many a stand where they have produce from other farms; Sunday a stand in Ridgewood had Blueberries in supermarket-type containers, and I asked about them, he said "they're from my neighbor".

So I guess we really can never be sure. It would probably be best if these people could only sell the stuff they grew themselves. I've seen stickers on peaches as well, and I stay away from those. I try to find the smaller farmers, with less variety, but better quality. Nyack on Thursdays has a guy like that. No "neighbors" products!!

I gave a long explaination on the NYC potluck thread that I'm reluctant to post the recipes since these are the only two items that I will be selling.  They are recipes that were given me which in no way represented the original items.  I reworked them over and over until they satisfied me. I hope that's understandable.

Oh I am just so mad at you.

I was so craving the cheese bread this afternoon, I would have actually been willing to make them from scratch. But I couldn't. Because I didn't have the recipe.

Are you going to have the batter on Thursday? If you are, I promise to come and buy at least 1 quart.

Could you at least tell me the special ingredient that you have to go all the way to Queens to purchase? Perhaps if I knew there was an ingredient in there that I couldn't get locally, I wouldn't feel so bad about not being able to make them.

Come on, PM me the recipe. I won't tell. Promise.

Elyse -

are you selling the batter as well as the bread? if so, that might be a way to distribute your product commercially via UPS local, and let the restaurants, etc bake it onsite

Paul, I won't be selling the bread, just the batter. Just starting out with home cooks, but maybe in the future selling to restaurants.

Rachel, did you get Suzanne's recipe? It's in pastry and baking.

I will definitely NOT have batter tomorrow.

elyse was officially sold out of pecan pies by 3 pm today. just minutes before i arrived. and the bastard who bought the last one was still there, with the pie.

but, i picked up 2 cookies. i should have picked up more, as the only thing left of them by the time i got home were the crumbs on my front seat and shirt.

Yay! That's exciting news. I don't know if the cookies didn't thrill me because they're avarage, or because I made hundreds of them. I haven't eaten anything but cookies for two days. What did you have again? Mexican chocolate and chocolate chip?

Actually it was very cool. Rail Paul came by and suggested I bring the remaining cookies to restaurants in the area and ask if they want to buy them. I did. They did. NJ Dutchess came by too, and got pie. I hope she likes it!

Next week there will be more pies and pao de queijo.

yip. the chocolate did have a kick as well. was there cinnamon in them?

Elyse decided that her dark Mexican chocolate cookies with the chile and cinnamon resemble the mayan love chocolate featured in the movie Chocolate. I suggested that to a buyer who wandered through and he took one, hope he got lucky with it!

There were quite a few people leaving the Midtown Direct trains while I was there, probably 50 or 60 per train. Capturing some of those people will add $ to Elyse's till, so I'm sure there will be a sign at platform level next week.

I wonder if the Epernay French bistro in Montclair (north park street right off Bloomfield Ave) would be interested in buying 20 or 30 heart shaped Mayan love cookies for $1.50 each? Might make a nice dessert item with coffee, tied in with the movie theme

Paul, we'll have to wait til my partner springs for a mixer first! And another sheet pan or two. Or eight. I think if I suggested heart shaped cookies his head would pop off.

Tommy, interesting yummy, or interesting I don't want to hurt your feelings? Cayenne a good choice, or should I think about other chiles?

P.S. I didn't get lucky after eating the cookies!

interesting is almost *always* good.

i liked the mixture of savory and sweet. and cinnamon, as we all know, is *always* the secret ingredient.

Elyse, the pecan pie was incredible. I picked mine up at 2:00 and it was still warm. Definitely the best I've had. You should charge more -- $9 or $10.

The Bloomfield "Farmer's" market was disappointing. There was just one other vendor, and I don't think that they were growers.

Elyse, I hope that you find other venues for your product. You're very talented.

njdutchess, I am honored that you've spent 1/4 of your posts on me! You really think $9 or $10 for that little thing? I was thinking of going up to $7. $8? Thanks for coming, and thanks for the compliment! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

There is supposed to be another farm stand with fruit pies, but they keep ditching. But I like being the only baker there!

You are so lucky to be the only baker there. I'm jealous. I think the Austin Farmer's market is almost all bakers -- and professional bakers at that! There's Swedish Hill Bakery, Texas French Bread, a couple of other small shops and one girl who calls her business "Full Belly Bakery".

Elyse, keep up the good work!

Pao de queijo is definitely happening this week. How many should I make? I have three on reserve already. I'm selling 32 oz, and 16 oz..

Pecan pies, I'm still waiting for the molds, but I can take special orders. Several pies on reserve too.

Just FYI.

I'll take the pao in a 32 oz size, if you don't have me on reserve already

Bloomfield NJ Farmers Market, opposite the NJ Transit train station at the Glenwood Avenue end. Thursday, starts 2 pm ends 7 pm?

32 oz for Paul! On reserve. Rosie, I hope you make it one of these days. It'll be nice to meet you.

I found my pie molds, and am going to test them tomorrow. They're not the qualita, but we'll see how they work. I got 10 large, and 10 small.

Next question. It's supposed to rain like anything. The other vendor is out in any weather. What do I do? I'll have big tupperware type things, but how long do I stand in the rain? Canopy's a tad small. Actually, I'll have no car so will have to stand there until someone picks me up!

Sorry! Opens around 2, closes at 7 when the cop goes home. Lackawanna Plaza.
