Also, almost *every* firehouse kitchen Ive been in has a bottle of Gravy Master and a box of what is that bay flavoring...Old Bay?

And we crank out some damned good meals in those kitchens.

Sorry this is off topic.

Not off topic at all. At this very moment, several food producers are probably scouting firehouses for hunky guys who love to cook. We'll probably see that show in the fall on FoodNetwork with Jill Cordes hosting.

I wonder if anybody's doing a Baywatch cooking program for FoodNetwork? Incredibly sculpted women who long to cook (in their bathing suits, of course) for surfer dudes. Might be more suitable for MTV, tough...

What about Padme Latskhy or what ever her name is? She just about rules.

Id be happy with any of them in my firehouse...and Rachel...god I cant remember her last name.

I think Id be a god in house if I could pull off getting her in for dinner.

Thinking in terms of any of them posing for pix in my fire gear as a souvenir for the house. Id get ribbed mercilessly for my coat smelling like a womans fragrance....but if one of them was the source...do you think Id honestly give a rats ass?

Hi nyfire guy, nice to meet you....

My point...and I have one, not just on the top of my head :raz: ...

Is that I credit television, in particular, Mme. Julia Child, for encouraging american cooks to use fresh ingredients in cooking. I remember the 60's as being a veritable wasteland for suburban american cuisine... And not just in my home.... Anyone else have a plate of wonder white bread on the table with a stick of margarine as your evening "bread basket?"... As Emeril would say, Julia kicked it up a notch...

I have nothing against frozen foods or dried spices, my home is full of both as well.

So, am I the only one old enough  to remember Dione Lucas, who had a cooking show on t.v. long before Julia came along?

Watched "Everyday Italian." Except for the marginally attractive hostess it was an utter snore fest. I can see how some homebodies may find it engaging though. After watching Mario whip up some Lasagna Bolognese--making sure not to cut his veggies too neatly and slopping sauce all over the place like a true Italian--the perfectly 10X dusted polenta cake (pretty nice recipe) and cream reduction for the mushroom "ragu" was disheartening given the title of the show. Suggestion (that will undoubtedly go unheeded): hire out one of those cute little Italian grandmas with poor knife skills for that show or get someone on par with Lynn Rosetto Kaspar. Does everyone who cooks on these new shows have to look like they stepped off of Melrose fucking Place?

I am only (HA!) forty friggin' four...and was just a wee one when Julia arrived on the scene on Channel 2 in Boston.... she was the first tv chef I recall.... I think her show initially ran about 15 minutes, though it may have just seemed that way.... I don't recall Dione Lucas.... It's odd how I started watching Julia..... I actually misread the tv guide and thought the show was called "The Fire Chief" and was about firefighting. Serendipity!

Obviously, yes.

I rather liked the polenta cake recipe as well. Might even try it . . .

Who exactly are you calling attractive now?  And who was unattractive then?

no one in particular. i was explaining a possible impetus behind the choice of putting people who look like they stepped off of "fucking Melrose Place" on television. in fact, i'm not even sure TVFN started this.

Oh, this is long-term Food Network policy: Jack McDavid, Chen Kenichi, Sarah Moulton, Gordon Elliott, Sissy Biggers, Mario Batali, the Two Fat Ladies. These people are getting air time for their looks, not their personalities or talent. Basically, it's twenty four soft porn, with some cooking thrown in.

You know, it's funny how it goes with TV channels. They show a whole bunch of shows, and some of 'em I am interested in watching and others I am not.

The new "uglies" are mere tokens. And as for the veterans who need facelifts--they came in under the wire, back before looks mattered all that much. And hey, I'd have a little romp with Sissy Biggers--a little low light, a couple Magnums....
