A Quick Tomato Question ...

Is there a difference between grape tomatoes and cherry tomatoes? Are there variations of each? Thanks!

No expert but: The cherry tomatoes I've always purchased are basically round and generally have a diameter of over an inch and a more traditional red. The grape tomatoes I buy are generally much smaller than that and often look like miniature pears and are more red-yellow (but not orange).

Augmenting what Porthos noted, cherry tomatoes remind me of juicy tomato orbs while grape tomatoes are more thick walled and less luscious - more like a Roma (not a great one)

Cherry tomatoes look like cherries and grape tomatoes look like grapes, that is all.

I don't like grape tomatoes. They have less flavor and do not break down as easily in cooking. The sugar level is much lower.

I don't like them, either Andie. They don't cook well at all and aren't tasty in salads.

I am not sure that you can generalize. I buy grape tomatoes all the time from Trader Joe's ('mini pearl grape tomatoes") and had the opposite experience - full of flavor and quite sweet. In summer it's our favorite snack and we go through at least a couple of pounds a week.

I've gotten some yellow grape tomatoes that were really outstanding, purchased at Fresh & Easy, grown in California.
