Some recent dinners.

Asian-spiced kedgeree - a Nigella recipe that we really like. Great comfort food.

Chicken Enchiladas with a poblano/almond sauce. The sauce was leftover soup that we condensed down.

White bean, bacon and kale soup.

Pan-seared bavette steak. We really like this little cut. A local beef producer sells it at our farmers market.

So what makes the carrot and Raisin salad "African"? C&RS is one of my faves, and I'd love to hear of something same but different! Recipe for the Cukes, please?

Wilt cucumbers with salt, make dressing of sour cream, lemon juice, s&p, add chopped dill, mix.

The carrot salad is actually currants, oops. It's a Jane Brody recipe: Jane Brody's North African Carrot Salad

So last night thanks to Ottomanelli's we had another wonderful dinner.. We had a 3.5 pound black pig roast and these wonderful ribs from Denmark.. All kept in a brine made from salt, sugar, star anise, pepper, garlic, ginger, and a tiny bit of cinnamon.

First I brined it, then I took it out and tied the roast for even cooking..

Plated with greens and a baked potato that was covered in salt and cooked at a really high temp:

Also brined these ribs from Denmark.. The guy was telling me that they use smaller pigs there or something. But the ribs were tiny and wonderful.. Really picked up the flavor of the anise.

Baked in the brine for a half hour and then grilled on a pan:

We turned leftover green curry paste into a quick sorta-Thai meal: green curry with chicken, mushrooms, and Thai basil; stir-fried gai lan with garlic and oyster sauce; eternal cucumbers; and jasmine rice.

That looks so wonderful, especially the gai lan...and I'm thinking is there anything that garlic and oyster sauce doesn't make better? (I have a real weakness for Asian greens!)

i thought i had taken pictures of last night's pizza but my camera doesn't seem to find them. tried a different recipe and am not sure i liked it. it was from Jane and Michael Stern's Real American Food - the thin crust pizza but the dough came out so wet i had to call johnnybird to get me some olive oil for my hands.

made one with tomato sauce and parmesan and asiago cheese; one with pesto. the pesto came out more like a foccacia. taste was ok, though.

today it is a dark, drizzly day so will cook the sauerbraten i've had brining since wednesday along with some mashed potatoes, red cabbage and applesauce. tomorrow ruby chicken with some sort of a starch.

Nothing is better than frying in lard.

Nothing.  Do not quote me on this.

Thanks, Kim and C. sapidus. Nice to see you again too.

Daniel, if only I was just a cab ride away from those heavenly pork buns...necessity is the mother of doing it yourself!

Tonight we had some really nice burgers courtesy of beef from the Farmer's Market.

The other night I had a nice cut of beef that needed to be cooked...I was craving a good dark beer, so I settled on French style of stew with dumplings, and cooked the whole in a lovely Festbock. It was amazing. The dumplings were incredibly light and fluffy. This came from my Mom's old copy of Great Dinners From Life. I'm sure some of you remember this series from a few decades ago.

Looks like pizza has been on a lot of minds these days, now that it is cool enough to crank the oven up hot... Made pizza with roast chicken, thyme, leeks sauteed with a bit of bacon, and gruyere... Serious yum!

Kale has been popping up in the stores here.. and the Dinner thread just gave me 2 great ideas to use it: MiFi´s kale frittata and menuinprogress´white bean and kale soup.

Shaya – those buns are gorgeous! I have that book and can’t wait to have some time to play with it!

MiFi – that sausage meal is just a beautiful fall dinner!

My dad and stepmom were in town last night on their way to Florida. Dinner started with pimento cheese, crackers and pickles:

So incredible! When I made it before, we liked it a lot, but thought it would be even better with gravy. Well, with the sauce for the short ribs, it was really over the top delicious! Thanks again to lucylou for the recipe!

For dessert, I decided on peanut butter pie:

very simple and good and one of the only desserts that my dad will eat (sans chocolate for him).
