Hi all

I currently get a meat box delivery from Well Hung Meat limited and the meat is indeed very nice - but i'm looking for some meat for a special occasion, and want something very special.

Any recommendations? Any type (non-game, not that it's in season I'd have thought) is welcome, mail/internet order as I wont be able to travel too much.

Thanks

Hi mate, i'm up in sunny (*ahem*) Stoke on Trent.

Any idea what some of these top Mich' starred places use? Saying that, best beef i've had was a tie between the starred-Baslow Hall and Michael Caine's new Abode hotel, which doesn't have a star.

Adey - thanks for that, I will take a look at their website.

I'm going to be controversial here and say that most chefs in this country don't have a clue (or don't care) about serving "uber quality meat". Chefs want meat that a) is consistent in its quality and b) meets the price they are willing to pay. For that reason alone I wouldn't be swayed by a supplier that has page long lists of chef recommendations (note that I don't say that the meat is no good). Consistency is another problem in this country,I'm suspicious that it is possibly a problem in most countries. The best meat I have eaten in this country has been cooked by myself, I would say that not one of the top ten pieces of meat I have had in this country have been served to me in a restaurant. For what its worth I go for Dexter anytime I see it especially if it has been hung for 5 weeks or perhaps even 6 but a lot of people find that too long with Dexter.

For Uber Quality meat I think you need to find a small supplier that understands what you want, of course that is difficult if you aren't ordering from them regularly or in large quantities. If any supplier, farmer, producer, butcher, chef here thinks that they have the best quality meat in the country please let me know because I want to try it :smile:

i think you're right to a certain extent matt, there are other considerations beside taste that matter to a resto, and continuity of supply is certainly an issue, the best meat is likley to come from small artisanal producers and they can't cope with an order for 20 strip loins every week. In our pub we got our beef from a local butcher (not a catering specialist) and he often struggled to keep up supply. We had some excellent dexter but anthony worrall thompson bought all the prime cuts the day before we got our order in and that was that. There's a reason why ginger pig for example only sell to a small number of restaurants.

and as prices are flying through the roof at the moment, price will become even more important to the trade buyer as the opportunity to pass those costs through menu price rises are minimal.

by far the best meat in the UK is butchered by Jack O'Shea - a great friend of mine, but nonetheless I speak purely with my taste buds here. I'm from Argentina and we have without a doubt some of the finest meat in the world - I have been eating meat from Jack for almost a year now and it is without a doubt the best meat i have had outside of Argentina.

You can get in in his shop in knightsbridge or through our website. All the steaks on the bone are superb, as is the bavette and onglet.

On Jack O'Shea, your judgement is sound here - this is a talented guy who knows his metier and works hard on sustaining the highest standards.

His other shop on Rue le Titian in Brussels (which pre-dates Knightsbridge) is the best butchers in the city - I'm off there now for a kilo of marinated bavette and whatever else looks good.

CheGuevara - interesting coincidence given where you are from, this week his Brussels newsletter (edited I think by sister Grainne) mentions an Argentinian restaurant here

Meet Meat – The ‘Heston’ Burger’ – rue stevin, schuman – even if its an argentinian restaurant they were so impressed by the heston burger (made with pure irish beef) they added it to their menu.

i've never been to his brussels shop - i was meant to go for the 10th anniversary with him but alas i was away that week-end. my brother went and apparently said the shop is wonderful.

if you like lamb - try some breast of lamb - on the bbq cooked very slowly or in the oven, also cooked slowly. only salt...

I presume the online suppliers mentioned so far deliver anywhere in the UK? If not, does anyone know any decent places that offer delivery in Cumbria?

Also, not meaning to take it off topic but somewhere that sells vegetables as well as meat would be great! So far I have found this place: http://www.howbarroworganic.co.uk/ Has anyone bought from here before? Would you recommend?

Right on the plot. http://www.manserghhall.co.uk/

I've been buying most of my meat from Mansergh for a few years now. Organic, well-hung and well butchered (a problem with some internet suppliers, IMO). A pleasure to deal with this family firm.

I think that, for Cumbrian customers, they also do veg.
