now in quebecker it means where do you go for drinks after work usually on a thursday but in the summer it can be all week

It's not a place but a thing: Québécois for happy hour or a cocktail party, and it can take place any day of the week.

On orgainse un petit 5 à 7 pour souligner son arrivée.

Ce bar a des maudits bons 5 à 7 !

I've never heard the expression used in its "Parisian" sense in Quebec (or in France, for that matter), and two Québécois word nerds I just asked say they haven't either.

I like Reservoir on Duluth close to St-Laurent, Montee de Lait on Vlleneuve next to St-Denis (better for a glass of wine as reservoir is for a glass of beer), and both have good eats, and on thursdays only for a special treat, Olive et Gourmando in Old Montreal. i have yet to try the new wine bar on pine ave. but the atmosphere at Bu doesn't pull me in and the food at Pullman I don't find worthwhile.

in paris a "5 a 7" means only one thing -- still, i guess you could call it a happy hour (champagne, cheri?).

As far as Thursday nights are concerned... I'll have to agree with Vinfidel Cavalli is flaming hot.

Lots of see and be seen happening there!

And if your one who likes beautiful people you'll have enough to make you

Cavalli gets my vote for Thursday night 5 a 7 or should I say 5 a 1am

The scene at Cavalli reminds of the Hamptons, and not in a good way. Middle-aged guys with hair-plugs and Ferraris, not to mention awful bartenders and worse food.

That scene would have been cool to me at 21, but not these days. The people were just as pretty (if not more so) at Dieu du Ciel, and I'll take a cute girl on a Vespa over a harlot in a BMW SUV anyday.

hey lambretta, dont hate

here we go again jealously complaining about people with money enjoying their wealth

this is a sickness in montreal and on this board

cavalli is a scene - see and be seen. you dont go there for the food, it is 5 a 7 after all

why is the girl a harlot if she has a bmw? she cant be a lawyer at the many firms in the area?

comparing dieu du ciel to cavalli as a 5 a 7 scene is the same as equating a vespa or bicycle with a bmw

Oh give me a break... Young women lawyers with beemers... You are obviously not in the legal business... Even I drive a luxury import and wear prada shoes, I can't imagine myself other than with a few baba cool friends who don't throw up their gold platted samosa's at 7:15h... This is Montreal buddy, not San Francisco.

Don't confuse hate and an opinion.

There's a lot of crap going down in Montreal right now. I spoke about this before. Mee toos and Paper type restaurants are a dime a dozen around the world. Only the ones with true signatures will survive. Even the big ass Gino enterprises of the Main are shaky at this time, just ask CDP why Gino and Co can't move out of Godin and need to sue them for mere loan payments . Just ask Dave McM why he's just had enough of the rosie world you're describing (I don't even know Dave but I can probably predict his answer). Having a good time has nothing to do with money or charity, it's not a question of living it 5 star or getto and it's not about the type of car that you drive. If you want to oppose that, so be it, but please, stop imagining yourself in the sack with a young natural perfect corporate lawyer who drives a beemer... cause either you have no clue or I need to meet your dealer.

And don't believe that self described cool getto spots are any better either, some are failing miserably by trying to reach the above mentionned crowd as an ultimate objective. If you want to be double stack melting cheesy for one night and let loose, that's one thing. If you want to defend weekly cheesiness that's a whole different subject.

OK - I'll take all of my impressions out of the equation. As this is a food and, to a lesser extent, drink, board, I'll comment on those two aspects of Cavalli.

Drinks - watererd-down and poorly constructed.

Food - white fish and beef carpaccio were at best passable (the beef tasted 'funky') and not worth half their prices.

It seemed like any of the dime-a-dozen bottle service places here in NYC. The one thing I will give it the benefit of the doubt on, however, is its wine list, which at least was quite interesting, allbeit overpriced.

Now - to Dieu du Ciel - since they only have drinks, I can only point out that they make some of the best beer in North America. I don't know if thats an opinion or a fact.

And I shouldn't, but I can't resist - whether I have a million or a hundred million, I'm going to pick the Vespa over the BMW any day. Well, perhaps, like my name implies, a Lambretta.

i dont even know what this rant is about except more hating on other peoples lifestyles and insane comments about cheesy

you dont like it, shut it and move on, you are seriously dumb if you think that only signature restos will survive think again. montreal does not survive by having great food and signature chefs - it lives and dies by the handful of people that keep the restos busy. ever notice the same faces over and over and over again in the same restos? this thread is not even about that it is about 5 a 7 and of course the usual clowns come here and start making righteous comments about their 'pure coolness' instead of other peoples 'cheesy coolness'

how do you know i am not in the legal business? if you saw how much my company spends on legal bills each year you would shut up fast and run away with your prada loafers leaving skid marks. since i know for a fact that MANY female lawyers drive nice cars you should really just be quiet and munch your samosa quietly or ask your own dealer for a higher dose. lambretta made a stupid comment about harlots driving BMWs that could only be motivated by some kind of bad feelings and jealousy. if he does not like the feedback then he should not make comments.

you make some broad claims about insider knowledge about the CdP and the BN Group. you think you know but do you REALLY know? from your unformed comments i can see you do not.

back to the original thread, hijacker

so mr. prada luxury import - where do you go 5 a 7 with your baba cool friends?

Great post, Vin. I like how you totally don't address ID or Lambretta76's points yet manage to work in a number of put-downs and insults. I always thought this forum was about civil, intelligent, good-humoured discourse, but it's taken a newcomer to set me straight. Thanks!

Never having lived in the city of light, I bow to your greater knowledge of Parisian argot. But here's an interesting data point: while cinq-à-sept isn't listed in Le Petit Robert, the Robert-Collins or the Grand Larousse Bilingue, it does appear in the 1980 edition of the two-volume Harap's Standard, which defines it as a reception or party. So, 25 years ago, the then-leading French-English dictionary, which was notorious for mostly ignoring Canadian French, listed only the "non-Parisian" sense. Will have to ask more French French word nerds for input. And now you've got me wondering about another word whose "Parisian" meaning I only recently learned: croque-monsieur.

maybe i am stupid carswell but - what are their points?

for lambretta, once he removed his personal impressions his points were watery drinks and bad food. this is a good opinion. i made the point first that cavalli has sucky food. the martinis at cavalli are excellent and i never had any watery drinks. wine list is expensive but this is 5 a 7 not a dinner. i respet his opinion but making jabs at people because they are rich and young women that have nice cars is mean spirited. don't you think so?

what is the point of identifiler? a lot of crap is going down now in montreal? we are not living in san francisco?

what does this have to do with 5 a 7 carswell? please inform me. also show me any put downs i dont see any.

this thread is about 5 a 7 not who is jealous of whose lifestyle and who is coolerer and who is cheesy all week

This compels an experiment in which I must use this phrase. I have some friends who are from Montreal and another couple who are from France albeit not Paris. It will be interesting to see their responses! I could also sprinkle the phrase around at the next French cineclub meeting, but as I don't know many of the people there very well yet, perhaps I shouldn't unless I'm up for an adventure.

(Thanks for the examples, carswell!)

"Under the dusty almond trees, ... stalls were set up which sold banana liquor, rolls, blood puddings, chopped fried meat, meat pies, sausage, yucca breads, crullers, buns, corn breads, puff pastes, longanizas, tripes, coconut nougats, rum toddies, along with all sorts of trifles, gewgaws, trinkets, and knickknacks, and cockfights and lottery tickets."

and then there are the "croque-diamants" -- many of whom specialise in the "5 a 7" -- ok, i'll stop now
