@blue_dolphin, you must be so frustrated!  I admire how none of it comes through in your posts about this experience; I'd be cursing a streak bluer than your hair!!

Meanwhile, I bought a panettone for the first time to take to my brother's girlfriend, who was hosting Christmas this year.  I got it from an Italian deli in NYC which, while not upscale, is reputed to carry really good panettone's (I heard this from, among others, a person from Italy who seemed startled at the offerings).

The brand I got was called "Bonifante".  At the last second I remembered that she does not eat chocolate, so I got the traditional.  I carried it on the plane, trying to keep it from getting smashed.

Guys.  It was . . . not so good.  In fairness, it was not the most expensive one, but it was fifty bucks!  I really should've done some more research.

Lovely haul!  Any word about tariff fees or customs?

I got an email yesterday puporting to come from FedEx. Not a lot of telltale spam details, so maybe it was legit. I thought perhaps they were going to ask for duty.

Turned out to be a piece of spam, but not until DH and I had emailed back and forth trying to determine same!

Now THAT’S frustrating!  I’m sorry you went through that trouble and wound up disappointed!

I’m only frustrated for all the small businesses, here in the US and world-wide who are just trying to get the best materials and ingredients to make their best products and share them with customers who want to support them.  Saying any more would be against guidelines but my minor inconvenience has been nothing compared to theirs!

Oh, and my hair is currently a shade of neon green called Electric Lizard! 🙀

For next year, https://www.gouter.ca/

There's still hope. Last year something went slightly wrong with one of my panettones and Goûter sent me one gratis for Valentine's.

IIRC it had strawberries. Délicieuse!

I'm witcha.

And @TdeV, gouter.ca it is.  The photos of those make me want to come through the screen!

i cut into my Gouter Traditional Panettone for breakfast this morning. It's as light and airy as the photo suggests. The flavors are rich and delightful.  I warmed it in the microwave and gilded the lily with melted butter. Mmmaybe I'll share some of this around, and mmmaybe not!

I have to go move snow after this, and I'll be well fortified. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

What I do is lightly butter one side of a slice and place buttered side down, in a frying pan.  Once lightly toasted, I flip it and heat it through on the second side.

Good idea, thanks. I was thinking that a little crispness would be a nice addition. Your idea sounds like it would do the trick.

We enjoyed some of Gouter's Soma panettone this morning.  Excellent, as usual.

@ElsieD and anyone else, I’m looking for panettone serving suggestions for a lunch/brunch with ~6 friends tomorrow at the home of a friend. I have the Soma and Three Chocolates panettone and could bring either one. I’m leaning towards the Three Chocolate as it sounds very interesting.
I’m hoarding the classic one for myself!  I ordered the Apple Pie panettone but got the Three Chocolate instead so I’m definitely bringing that or the Soma.

Should I just cut slices so my friends can enjoy unadulterated panettone perfection?  Should I follow your butter toasting method and maybe top with a scoop of ice cream for a dessert treat?  Any other ideas?
Alternatively, I could cut and wrap wedges and send my friends home with some to enjoy at home, though I’ve never had a panettone with chocolate so would welcome any advice I might pass on to them.

Given the relative sizes, I'd go with the 3 Chocolates so everyone can get a decently-sized slice and you'll still have leftovers.

Elsie is probably a better guide than I, but I'd lean toward her butter-toasting method unless that's too fussy for 6 to 8 slices. If it can't all be done efficiently at once, then I'd say just warm them slightly in the oven if possible, and serve them as is. I can't comment on the ice cream, since I've never tried that. It would look "fancier" but might be overkill.

Last year I fed my guests unadulterated slices of Three Chocolates panettone.

They said (and I thought) "Outstanding."

I also suggest providing a slice of panettone-- no butter, no warming. Please try the Goûter panettone "as-is" before testing out variations. Enjoy!

I can't think that ice cream and panettone would go all that well together, but then, I've never tried it.  Plain is good but personally, I like it the way I prepare it.  We have been eating the Soma and are enjoying it.  Haven't tried the apple one yet; we also have the three chocolate.

Very helpful, thank you! I’ve never had a panettone made with chocolate and wondered if it had more of a dessert vibe.  I also didn’t know if the chocolate would make a mess if I tried to heat it in a pan.

The chocolate doesn't really melt as in making a puddle but it will soften a bit and pieces do times fall out.  When that happens, I just stick them back in.
