Yeah the softness of the crumb requires a setting upside down.

 

we bought our clamps from Italy moving on to a flipping rack for space and production capacity.

Ordered a chocolate panettone today from Goûter.  (Glad I do the banking in this house.)  I'm very impressed by how quickly they a) answered my multiple questions and b) sent my order out.  Looking forward to receiving it.

It hadn't even ocurred to me to indulge this year until the panettone pushers on here popped up. In the absence of much else to go on, I saw that Wirecutter did a review and plumped for their overall winner, Olivieri 1882...

Excellent perfume of orange and vanilla. The fruits were soft and moist, particularly the candied orange which was remarkably good. Once warmed through, the texture was delicate and melting, and the taste of butter, orange and vanilla very well balanced. I reckon I could easily polish it off on my own in a couple of sittings (or maybe just the one 😏).

I bought my first panettone of the Season yesterday. Carlos's family is here for the weekend and I bought it for their breakfast today. It's made in Costa Rica and not the best but I love it all and I will happily eat mediocre with the same enjoyment.

No picture of the panettone itself, it really wasn't that photogenic and we ate it all. It was the equivalent of about $12. Believe it or not, the best that I have had here I bought on an after Christmas sale rack at our little Chinese store for about $2.

I've never had, nor made, panettone. From what I've been reading it sounds reminiscent of Christmas Stollen, which used to be a family favorite luxury from an almost-local bakery.

 

Well. The bakery is still in business but those family gatherings are a thing of the past. I suppose I could have ordered a stollen for my sister and me, but in a fit of self-pity and desire to experiment, not to mention @Pete Fred's fabulous review...

Shopping for a panettone at a local store, as @Tropicalsenior did above, might have been more sensible. But no, I'm shooting for the stars. Planning to share it with special friends!

Stollen is more dense, chewy and bread-like, whereas panettone is light and airy with a very tender crumb like the best brioche.

 

Do be sure to warm it through before eating, though. I do slices in the microwave for one minute at 30% power.

 

Or you can do a whole one in the oven...

I cut 3/4" horizontal slices (heresy, but how we like it) and very lightly grill/warm in a teflon pan, no butter.   I eat my portion straight, while husband slathers his with butter.

Okay, second panettone of the year. The last 5 years it has become very popular down here and you can buy it just about anywhere.

This one was a gift from one of Carlos's clients. I don't know what it cost but it was probably more than what I paid for the last one that I got although it's a little smaller. Doesn't say on the package anywhere where it is made, just that it is imported.

I haven't opened it yet. It looks a little darker than what I like but it's still going to be good.

I'm going to use all my willpower and not open it until breakfast. I'll let you know how it is tomorrow.

Well this one is nothing to write home about. I think the cheap one that I bought is much better. This one is very dry and I have yet to find a piece of fruit, just a few raisins. When I go shopping this weekend I will see what else I can find.

I wrote to the email address asking for a quotation to send one to me in New Jersey but they never got back to me.  Just as well because I am broke as usual.

I'm going to have a slice for snack this afternoon.

That is odd. I got an auto email confirmation from Gouter and the next business day human correspondence. But email can always have issues… I know a bit of how email gets routed from one address to another and I am amazed it works as well as it does.

Did you send it to info@gouter.ca?  I've sometimes used .com instead of.ca on the odd occasion.  My experience has been that they have been very quick to respond, so maybe they didn't get your email?

As is, for me.

(I'm sure it's tasty warmed too.)

Probably, if there is any left in a couple of days, I might try warming it. 😂

 

It has a subtle scent of oranges.
