time clock recommendations

What app or device do you )or your employer) use to track employee hours/schedule, etc. We are a small bakeshop (less than 5 employees) and use a clover device on a tablet for retail transactions. I'm looking for recommendations for a means to track employee hours instead of a paper system. I would like employees to be INSIDE the building to clock in (because I know someone would try to clock in from their phone while still in the parking lot) and I'd like to not have buddy punching. Paychex wants $55 per month (no contract) for their device, which I find outrageous considering what it is and what I am already paying them for payroll processing..... so I'm wondering what you use and would you recommend it?

It's not a restaurant, but I have a Pyramid 4000 time clock.  It uses punch cards, but automatically adds up the weekly hours.  We just have a camera in the ceiling facing the time clock to keep buddy punching at bay.

Just did a quick check- Pyramid also makes a fingerprint based punch clock that you can export the data to Paychex et al. MSRP is $599 but I wouldn't be surprised if you could get it for much less online somewhere.

Where I work we use timetrex with what I believe are USB based iButtons.  Some of us had doubts at first but speaking as an employee it seems pretty painless.  I haven't heard complaints from anyone.  I certainly would not want to go back to filling out a timesheet.

@gfweb, I agree with your assessment!  I really like the specialist I am working with now; but I feel like they nickle and dime you every possible step of the way.  ADP is worse.  I thought about doing Patriot Software but I really need someone else to handle this.  I have too much on my plate and too terrified of mistakes!

And when they screw-up it takes a long time to get them to admit and correct it.

We currently use Homebase https://app.joinhomebase.com which you could use for free for basic timeclock and schedule functionality.

It has a few quirks that make it tricky for us so we're looking at Hot Schedules https://www.hotschedules.com/ for next summer.

Both have crew messaging which is a great feature and online scheduling.
