Munich Trip '08

Recommended Posts

I had hoped to do this live during the actual trip but internet access in the room was 107 Euros for the week. But since there seems to be nothing scheduled you are stuck with me  ....

In December '06 as we showed off our Paris and Munich photos, my M-I-L said she wished she could travel like us. She said if she went to Europe she would have to go on an old people tour and didn't want to do that.

So began the planning, we would take her to Munich in a year. Then of course we should take our 22 yr old Daughter, and if he can spring for himself her Boyfriend. Now we have 5 people and thats no good so we add my B-I-L.

May 23rd we take off for Heathrow from Newark NJ to brave Terminal 5. Our in-flight meal was chicken something with a cold dinner roll, salad, citrus pie, and maybe something chocolate. Breakfast a few hours later was asst tea sandwiches - chicken salad and ham with mustard sauce. I dont know why we east this stuff, but it's so like...ooooh goody a diversion.

After landing in London we are herded to terminal 5 for our connecting flight at which point we find out you can't go outside (yes I smoke) with out collecting your bags (which are checked through to Munich) and going through passport control with Biometric screening. There we sit for 6 hours watching the trash and scraps and crumbs of society pile up around us...that place was Filthy and no one cleaned it in at least 6 hours.

A 1 hour flight and we are in Munich, where a 35 min train ride takes us directly to the lobby of the Hilton.

While I took a long hot bath my B-I-L went on a beer mission and did some scouting in the neighborhood.

The kids headed off to the Carnival he found and the rest of us took a walk to look for a place for dinner.

After exploring for about an hour we settled on an outdoor table at Topgaste Restaurant Augustiner. Our waitress was excellent and we had lots of fun translating the menu. We ordered for the table a dish of Kase Spaetzle which came as an app...Spaetzle mixed with a cheese sauce topped with carmelized onions and a mound of crispy bacon...Amazing,,,We also had 2 orders of Schnitzle, a Sausage Stew with a sauce similar to Sauerbratten and ...of all things a Turkey and Mushroom stuffed baked Potato with a sour cream spiked brown sauce. We were fat, happy and in Germany...too dark no pictures

Bright and early the next morning we met up at Cafe' Cino in the lobby....

We all managed to make our way down there by about 10 am and ordered up some coffees, Coke Light, and yummies like Ham and Brie Panini, muffins and Chocolate Almond Croissants to fortify our trip to Marienplatz and the museums

We wandered aimlessly through Marienplatze for a while and watched the famous Glockenspiel, then headed south towards where I thought the museums were. Then we took a train a few stops and walked right back to the beginning, then the kids found someone with a map and we all went to the Neu Pinakothek. The kids raced through and headed across the street to the Modern (1 euro museum day)

Back to the hotel to freshen up for

which we also took the long way around to find

Here we have a rather lovely sausage sampler also at The Hoffbrau, all 3 of the guys ordered this...the whipped potatoes were to die for

My camera kinda freaked at this point so I donated 2 of my batteries to the kids and have yet to load their pics in so we will revisit this place later...I do have my B-I-L's picture of Dessert though, we both got this. Kaiserschmaren...torn up pancakes with warm applesauce and powdered sugar I stole some whipped cream from Karl's apple strudel too

Thank you all for the Welcome

heidih...this was a basic warm sweet and sour red cabbage I love the stuff, but come to think of itthat was the only cabbage I had all week

Last year I kept ending up with white cabbage salad with everything I ordered, nice enough but I like the red better

For all that the Hoffbrau should have been tourist "crap food" it certainly wasn't, it was loud and the staff was slammed ( a few days ago I noticed a mistake on the bill, in our favor) I wouldn't rule it out for food quality.

I have no idea if we had anything planned for Monday morning but after trying to confirm vague plans for Tuesday hubby and I split off to find where we needed to be on Tuesday AM. The kids went their way, I think they headed straight for Englisher Garden and GMa and Kurt went off also...

We made our way across town by train and with 2 sets of almost directions went out the wrong subway entrance and walked all the way around the Siemans campus. We did confirm our special plans and headed to the Chinese Tower beer garden in the park to meet everyone at 3.

We headed for the food stands

Pille mentions these pancakes on her nami-nami blog.

I do hope you tried pig's knuckle....that might be as big as someone's head.

Delicious. We actually had one of those in a beer hall in Tallinn, when we met Pille....connection there somehow.

What fun! You are bringing back good memories of meals and waitresses from our brief stay in Munich. Our English Garden meal was in the evening, in the rain, huddled outside under the umbrellas. Good food and much laughter.

Monday evening finished with a stroll and a picture review over a few beers back in our room.

The kids took off for parts unknown  ...I have to keep remembering they are over 21 and could be on this trip alone

Tuesday was my hubby and his brothers big day, and I was along for the ride (ha ha)

The kids were going to the Zoo and GMa was supposed to go shopping, she ended up at Dachau

We grabbed a roast beef Panini in the cafe and hoisted a duffle bag down to the subway. I was a little worried about the outcome of this day as alot was riding (get it) on the kindness of a stranger we had yet to meet...

Two weeks before the trip I emailed a local for some advice, who after being confused about where I found his email, asked what I needed help with. After a little chat of this and that I told what I really needed was someone to take a day off of work and come out to play with us. "No Problem what day?"...Tuesday the 27? ...Ok

Then we get to the hotel and have no internet...I got 5 mins to check my mail Monday afternoon and give him the last bit of info but as it turns out he made a bunch of calls and found US

We arrive at the motorcycle rental place to get a message from the confused manager that Zappa called and will arrive soon :laugh::wub:

We rented a pair of BMW R1200RTs and with the wonderfull Zappa leading the way on his Honda Goldwing we head for Mittenwald and Austria

And then what? And then what? Don't hesitate to throw in some alpine scenery with the food porn!

I've only been to Munich a couple of times, as a vegetarian. (I've come to my senses. That roast pork--did it have the skin on?--looked amazing.)

Lets see....Skin on the roast pork...of course - very crispy and just a touch sticky too

This is our lunch stop in Mittenwald...all the boys with our new friend Zappa on the left with his Goldwing

gallery_23695_426_132226.jpg

And this would be what I saw when I turned and stepped to my left

gallery_23695_426_468027.jpg

there was another one across the street too

Lunch here was long and tasty Kurt and I ordered the Venison Stew each of us was served a portion big enough for 4 people and a bowl of homemade spatzle was placed between us...best spatzle Ever..

Karl and Zappa both got the roast pork with sauerkraut and potato dumplings

no food pics didnt want Zappa to think we were freaks and leave us somewhere

Somewhere like on the side of the road in Austria

gallery_23695_426_341964.jpg

or perhaps 1550 metres up a mountain

gallery_23695_426_277586.jpg

actually I wouldn't have minded if they let walk back down that road

gallery_23695_426_218589.jpg

but this time if I turn around...there is a restaurant on top of this mountain...there was a tour bus from Italy also...the road up to this was a freekin goat path, a very well paved goat path but still I wouldn't to meet a bus on a blind corner.

AAArgh Image gullet seems to be down

So Tuesday was scarey as hell, we went south to Mittenwald and on into Austria through the towns of Imst, Fleiss and Fuchsmoos and back around to the Autobahn back to Munich. We stopped at a cafe right after being on top of that lovely mountain and had some coffees, a Soda that I have no idea what it was called but it tasted like a cross between Ginger Ale and Apple soda..pretty good, and some apple strudel with icecream and whipped cream.

After returning the bikes to the shop around 8pm we said goodbye to our new friend untill Thursday when we were going to meet up again for dinner with his wife also.

Back at the hotel we grabbed some Panini went to our room for a beer or 2

Wednesday we had to be at the Main train station at 9am for our trip to Neuschwanstein with Radius Tours. We picked up our tickets and hit a cafe downstairs for breakfast. I had a buttered soft pretzle ring, Karl had a sandwich and Gma got a pastry, I think the kids had eaten at the hotel.

We met up with our guide at 9:30 and soon boarded the 1st of our trains

which left us in Buchloe for an hour because we missed the connecting train!!! There was muntiny in the air...the 90 degree sticky air. By the time the next connection came the next train from Munich had arrived so we all preesed onto 1 train with not nearly enough seats. 1 hour later we arrived at our next stop which was a bus...with you guessed it not enough seats...Mutiny I tells ya so we squirted off that bus 10 min later at the base of the Mtn that Neuschwanstein sits on straight into tourist hell. It is a 40 min walk up to the castle we had 55 min before our tickets expired....Gma took the horse carriage, the kids took the minibus and for some sick sick reason I walked. Jess thought I had sunburn when we met at the top...nope, just about to pop a gasket

Castle is very pretty...save 47Euros and your sanity ...buy a picture of it in Munich and dont bother with the trip

We had much better luck with the transportation back to town and after a cool shower were ready for dinner.

The kids wanted Mexican  So they took off back into town. We wanted Pizza :hmmm:

We have decided to try pizza wherever we go so that is what we did, less than a block from the hotel was Bella Italia with nice garden seating and 12 inch pies which we stuffed ourselves with. I had a mixed seafood pie and the others ordered a couple of Salami pies and a Salami, mushroom and hot pepper combo...

And we ended a very hectic tiring day with that and a few beers.

pics to come ...

This brings back wonderful memories of our 2 week trip around Germany at just this time last year. Isn't it "spargel zeit"...aka asparagus season? We found fabulous asparagus on every menu - most restos had a separate page just for the spargel dishes...talk about eating seasonally. My only complaint is that they LOVE the white version over there and I firmly believe the green has more flavor.

As to the Neuschwanstein, our plans only included seeing it from the bottom of the mountain - when we got there, the fog was so thick, that we bought postcards to say we had been there!

Over the 2 weeks, the food was unremittingly great - I think German cooking has a bad rap!

I need to start some discussion on that after this and the video editing and the Flikr thing...

I still cants seem to load any pictures but I am going to wrap this thing up anyway

Thursday was another "scatter day" Kurt was going to rent a bicycle and explore, the kids were going to the Deutches Museum and Karl, Gma and I were going shopping.

We started at the Viktulien Market for ...uh brunch? I had all these plans that we would get tons of food from different stands and have a big buffet but that never works... I ended up with cheese spread, a nut and seed roll and a beer oh well next trip..

We headed for the Galleria so I could get the Rouladenringes I wanted last year...(metal clamps for stuffed meal rolls so you dont have to use string or picks)

Then off to pick out Beer steins for Karl and his Brothers and gifts for other people.

Kurt went off to Englisher garden to see the surfers, the nude sunbathers and go swimming in the Isar, he did all that and had a few beers at the Chinese tower beer garden.

Thursday evening the kids had plans to meet a group from the Something Awfull forums and we were having dinner with Zappa and his wife.

We met up at the Hirschgarten near Nymphenburg Palace and had a few beers and then headed for a nearby Greek restaurant...yeah Greek food on vacation in Germany.

We sat in their garden and had a wonderfull time chatting over lamb, and mixed seafood platters...I think they chose this place because it was across the street from our Trolley Stop

Friday morning was our last day...and another planned Tour. This time on a big old bus, right to the door of where we were going...ok there was a second lighter bus to take us straight up the mountain above Berchtesgarten to the Eagles nest. This was a wonderful trip with great scenery and commentary from our guide at Greyline Tours

After the 4 story elevator ride up to Hitlers Tea house and plenty of time to ooh and aah over the scenery we went back down to the tourist center where there is a restaurant and a Documentation House. We had lunch with a side of great views and then buzzed through the Documentation House..German only..

Friday evening we didnt do much, went to the supermarket in the train staion below our hotel for sandwich fixin's and some goodies to bring home ( lots of candy, and Gyro spice pack) and then it was time to pack. We had a 4:30 am wake up call to make our 7am flight so we could go sit in London for another 6 hours....DIRECT FLIGHTS PEOPLE

bad airplane food and then we were home
