Any ideas suggestions great places not found on the or off the beaten track?

I've heard about a place called Gilligans near Spring Valley? Also I noticed a newer Indian place where Ihop used to be on 59. I used to like Posa Posa 'cept for the greasiness. I love the place on the east end of 59 boat club or harbor club or somethin like that... also The Old '76 House in Old Tappan NY! Thanks for your suggestions and ideas I hope we get a regular thread going for us folks who live in Bergen Co NJ and Orange/Rockland Counties in NY nothing too far though ok?! Thanks again...

you might want to post this question on the NJ board. a lot more people who live in NJ and read the NJ know about restaurants right north of the NJ border than do those who live in/read the NY board, which seems primarly manhattan-centric. or at least NYC boro-centric.

When I mentioned a NY place on the border in the NJ it got moved to NY! LOL... so either way I can't win on this sorry! I agree this is very manhattan-centric/NYC. We should have a NY forum for the orange/rockland folks it seems to be their own little realm/world. Sparkill might be a bit far for me I will google it later (per the previous post) but the serving sizes on relish online site looks way too small for our big appetites and a bit pricy too! I don't mind plunking down 100. or so for a couple but not for a non-NYC or non-5 star place. A good example is "The Restaurant" or "Stony Hill Inn" in Hackensack they are worth the extra money IMHO! Thanks again though tommy & purple pirate.

Relish is about 5 tiers above Stony Hill Inn and The Restaurant, IMHO. Just a completely different level of restaurant: more quality of ingredients, care of preparation, creativity, and overall experience. Also Freelance in Piermont, NY is excellent. Both these places are about 15 minutes from River Vale.

But if quantity of food is the overriding feature that you want in a restaurant, you'd probably do best at the so-called Spanish/Portuguese type places that abound in Newark, with their 3-pound steaks and giant lobsters.

Sorry folks, if I go to a restaurant in N.J., I post about it in N.J. There is nothing to keep N.J.'ites from posting in N.Y. as has obviously happened on this topic

If the NY forum is NYC centric, I think the reasons are obvious, however, NYC-centric does not mean NYC exclusive. It would be less NYC-centric if therre was more interest and posting on these non-NYC areas such as is occurring with this topic. Keep it up!

I was very disappointed with a Suffern restaurant last weekend that I had heard a lot about - Pasta Cucina. We stopped there on our way back upstate from Northern NJ. It was extremely mediocre - big quantities, little quality.

i think you're missing the point. unless you're being facetious. in the case of the former, i'll only suggest that many people who visit/read/post on the NJ forum, and who are interested in restaurants directly over its border, couldn't give a bit less about the rest of the society, or the NY forum for that matter. they just don't read it. therefore there's value added in discussion of those restaurants that are closer to NJ than to NYC, but just over the NY state border, on the NJ forum. but what do i know.

Ok Menton, heh... I don't know where sparkill is but you may cause me to google it one day. No, I should have been more clear... lol I don't like those spanish food places with tacky decor and overabundance of food. I meant for the money I don't want to pay 20-40. a plate for a medallion of food when we eat on weekends it's usually one meal and I like to be and taste hearty yet delicious. You did make me giggle with the thought of the big steaks and lobsters (mutant food mwah-hah-hah!) however I am not a big meat eater I look for places that are good with shrimp and chicken mainly and prefer indian or thai food.

El Bandito is a very well-known and long established Mexican restaurant in Spring Valley. I've been to it at least half a dozen times, consistently good.

El Bandito is muy bueno although tacky is too polite for the decore. Get past the banners and tiles and paintings and just eat. Most of the time there is an amuse of a flour tortilla with cheese and chorizo warm chips and salsa of course(heavy cilantro). Then maybe the chiliquiles for an app and there are some great dishes across the menu from the combo plates which arent bad themselves. If you order drinks with your meal you usually get a shot of Quarenta y Tres after dinner, perhaps with some flan....MMmm
