My parents sent some boxed mixes up from Singapore, together with all the Chinese New Year goodies.

The brand is Prima Taste and I haven't been able to find them here anywhere.

I tried making the rendang and it was so easy! You just follow the directions and in an hour (or less) you have perfect rendang.

It tastes gooood, better than that, it tastes accurate. Oops ... make that authentic. To my uneducated tastebuds that is.

They have a bunch of other dishes as well. So far I've tried laksa and mee rebus as well. They have all been a big boost to someone that misses the food from back home.

I'll try and post pictures of the other dishes if I manage to get to them before the plates get licked clean.

Prepared mixes have come a long way in the past decade. My parents had sent me an excellent version which came with own pack of kerisik!!! Can't remember the name though.

Another item I have been on is Penang Prawn mee mix, gets very very close to the real thing.

SG-, would appreciate it if you can find out the name, and if it's available in KL. There's so much good beef here that it's a shame not to use them for rendang.

Ask and ye shall receive! When I go on my grocery round this weekend, will note down all the various mixes for you. I think they're pretty nifty too. Don't mind doing the sending too. I feel for you, guys! :smile:

What? You think I'd throw out the oil like Ah Leung Gaw threw out the Bak Kut Teh Soup?

Lapped up the rendang with some famous mantou BIL bought from some highway stop.

What? You eat the oil too? :shock::biggrin: Note to myself: after having a Malaysian dish, check with Tepee/Laksa first before throwing anything away.

I take it these are sauce packets and you just add the meat?

TP do you have a picture (or link to one) of the box? That looks so good.

I made rendang once from a recipe I had but since I have never had the real thing I wasn't sure if the taste was even close... :hmmm:

Yes, Kris, it's simply searing the meat,

Then adding the packet of sauce and a cup of water,

Bring to a boil,

Slow simmer for 1-1/2 hours,

Use a spatula to scrape the bottom of the wok now and then.

Some like their rendang cooked like chan25's. I like mine drier with the chilli oil showing.

This brand offers a range of other great Malaysian dishes, as close to made from scratch as possible.

Mmmm... could do with some rendang with nasi lemak for a 2nd breakfast right now :biggrin:.
