Here's a nice Washington Post article about a commemorative restaurant "trail" set up to honor Edna Lewis via food and cultural discussions. It's set to close this weekend, although the restaurants themselves are alive and well. I suspect they'll continue to reflect things they learned during this 2+ year tourism event. It sounds as though it would have been interesting and delicious. Has any of you been to these restaurants?

The article should be unlocked.

If I read it aright, you just have to provide them with an email address. They'll start sending you email and of course you can cancel any time. I don't think it's an account where they charge you, as in a subscription. (I'm subscribed to their newsletters but not to the paper, either online or on paper.)

I can't open the article and don't want to pursue it with them, so I don't know what's on the "trail".  However, I'm guessing that one of the places that might be is Gage & Tollner in Brooklyn, where she was chef for a period around 35+ years ago.  I ate there when she was & it was a gorgeous room with excellent food.  Her she crab soup was a stand out.  Well, 3-4 years ago this place was rescued from having become a TGIF or some such & they restored the room to its former grandeur.  And they have her soup and a couple of other of her dishes on the menu.  Since we live a 10 minute walk away, we've now gone numerous times and can report that it's worth going for both the current food and the memories.  https://www.gageandtollner.com/history/

Sorry for the confusion about permissions and access to the article. For those who are interested but can't access it, here's a brief summary: the Edna Lewis Menu Trail was organized by the Orange County (Virginia) Office of Tourism to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Edna Lewis Cookbook. The participating restaurants are all in the state of Virginia.

The article discusses her widespread reach and influence in other areas, but this was cooked up (heh) to celebrate her roots.

Quote

The menu trail was created to celebrate the place that shaped Lewis’s culinary philosophy and educate visitors and locals alike about what she stood for. “She always insisted this is the area where it all started,” said her son Afeworki Paulos from his home in Georgia, and I was ready to explore this nurturing ground.

There are of course beautiful photographs of the dishes served by the participating restaurants. They all look like fine places to visit!

Thanks for sharing that, @Smithy!  Sounds like it would have been a sweet little road trip for a long weekend!

Edited to add this link to another map that lists the restaurants and their Edna Lewis menu items.
