saturday... low 'n slow turnip greens simmered with smoked pork hock, red potatoes and garlic. served with generous splash of homegrown/homemade tabasco vinegar and cornbread wedges.

tonight... chicky leg browned then baked with rice. used the rest of country mushroom soup [cremini/carrots/onion...] i made last week for rice broth. broccoli and onion stir fry on the side.

To kick off the weekend, a filet mignon on a bed of roasted onions with a red wine reduction.

Lunch on Saturday was an abundance of green leafy things to make up for the beef orgy the night before.

Last night was a dish that's made in Le Marche...Baccala made Ancona style. Basically roasted cod, potatoes, stuffed tomatoes and some tuna-anchovy paste.

I think we're all in love with hzrt8w's ma po tofu. Even though we just had a lovely roast chicken, baked potatoes, and a lively green salad, I'd love to be smelling that garlicky, gingery sauce simmering right now.

I came home from work to find a very-tired wife and a kg of pig belly. 

This is a GREAT first line for a short story.

I found out Mapo tofu freezes extremely well and I'm having a bowlful now with rice and longganisa (also tastes good with them) made from a batch I made a month ago. :wub:

That's right yeah, the round bit (which we call back bacon) would be "Canadian" and the thin bit is the "streaky".

The name 'Shortcut' or "Shortback' rings a bell. I'll have a look next time I go in. It's from a specialist Pork Butchers.

For tonight I made Coq Au Vin for eldest son (Jai). This is the first time I made it with white wine (always made it with red). The verdict? Two thumbs up and a lot of plate-licking after. Sorry no pictures, maybe I'll post some tomorrow (post-blog hangover blues).

Yesterday it was time to use up a few more dry aged steaks I picked up from a butcher. This one was a "cowboy" ribeye

I decided to combine the pastry and the savory in me and do something for a special dinner that had to be cooked ahead of time. So here goes. Just this last week I received a cookbook entitled Cucina and Famiglia by Joan Tropiano Tucci and Gianni Scappin. In this book is the original recipe for Timpano Alla Big Night that was featured in the Stanley Tucci movie "Big Night". By the way I highly recommend the movie to all foodies. Any way here is the result. And yes it was worth all the effort and I would do it again although I must say that there are some short cuts if it must be made on short notice. The Dish was served on white plates with a green salad and a red wine. How Italian is that.

No more photo pics from me for a while. We had a break-in on Saturday and the basta&d took both of my cameras. He would have walked out the door with our laptop too if Moe hadn't walked in on him.

I made kefta with tomato and eggs for dinner tonight. However, instead of lamb in the meatballs, I used pork, as it's cheaper and more readily available. I didn't have any ras al hanout, either, but I used the aromatics blend for making pho that a lot of shops sell here. It has cinnamon, star anise, and some other spices in it as well. Actually, once I mixed it with the tomatoes, it tasted like a really lovely ketchup. I was impressed. Served with some bread and some very cheap Italian red wine, it made a great meal for a damp day.

I'm so glad you and Moe were not harmed---the mingy little weasel must have run for his life. Poo on all sneaky, craven snaglets who take other people's stuff. :angry:

Ann - I am so sorry that happened to you, but very glad that you and Moe are alright. That is a horrible experience - our house was robbed when I was in middle school and we felt so violated - kept finding stuff that the creeps had taken and we hadn't noticed right away!

Don't stop posting, though! Even without the pictures, we all love your food so much!

Wow, wow, wow...I have a ton of catching up to do. Everyone's been making such great looking meals, I want to eat everything even though I just had dinner!

A bunch of photos from the last week or so...

Baked ziti with white sauce, mozzerella, bell peppers, onion, bacon and tomatoes:

Sesame noodles with cabbage and chicken. This was really good, with the sauce made from sesame oil, soy, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, chili garlic sauce and scallions:

Apple slices with fresh goat cheese, long peppers (ground up) and olive oil. Keith found this idea somewhere on eG, but I can't find where. It was really, really good:

Chicken stew with lots of mushrooms, onions, bacon and carrots over polenta. This probably belongs on the anti-dinner thread since it looks so gross, but it was soooooo tasty!

Wow, Nishla, you returned with a flourish!! The apple slices are little works of art---the whole picture belongs in a frame. And the "long peppers, ground-up"---what are they? It looks like a scatter of ground peppercorns, but were they raw and green?

The Ziti would grace any long, sunny Sunday table under the grape arbor, with wine in little tumblers, two dozen mismatched chairs, and a big, laughing family gathered round.

And the noodle dish---hot or cold?
