Asian food films/videos worth seeing

Recommended Posts

right, I was only looking for a place to post the the Asian food flick that I'd just watched on Cathay, Le Grand Chef which was a great food porn flick for the Korean market, with loving scenes of dousing green peppers in deangjang and stuff like that that'll just get any normal man really excited....okay, maybe "normal" isn't the right word.....

Anyways, there must be other Asian films that people get hungry over.

Tampopo? The Scent of Green Papaya? Eat Drink Man Woman? Any Wong Kar Wai film? The liver eating scenes from P (I'm shameless, I know)

Let's hear from you! This end of the threads has been way too quiet for too long!

How funny, I just posted about Le Grand Chef on my blog last month. Nice movie

Eat Drink Man Woman is my favorite food movie, or actually, it's my favorite film period. The opening scene is just amazing to me.

I also like Scent of Green Papaya...I can't think of any more though...

Oh,there's got to be more!

What's the Korean soap opera about the intrigues in the palace kitchen (I really should know this...Jewel In the Palace or something like that)...

This may not be the same but I've been watching a lot of Hong Kong Tv Series. I loved "Taste of Love". Pretty Pretty food. I am currently watching "Yummy Yummy" and have the "Gateaux Affairs" on the wings for next.

well, I just watched a HK movie 'Dumplings' (Gau Ji) with Bai Ling, Maggie Leung and Tony Cheung and it is definitely NOT for the squeamish.....although certainly about food...questionably appetising but interesting nonetheless

Oh gosh, you've just reminded me...I've seen this too

Hmm, I haven't seen this one. But, if TV series count, then I'll add the Korean drama: My Name is Kim Sam Soon.

The main character was a pastry chef, so there where a lot of good shots of yummy desserts

HAHA watched that recently too (although I remember it was Miriam Yeung not Maggie Leung...). I wouldn't recommend it to dumplings/bun lovers as it'll put you off for awhile...as it did for me...although I have come across a few quirky people who mentioned to me they began craving for it...

I love, love, love The Way Home (Jibeuro). The old Korean grandmother and her spoiled, gameboy-playing, "Kentucky Chicken"-wanting grandson make a fantastic, incredibly touching story. Grab the tissues.

Shelley: Would you like some pie?

Gordon: MASSIVE, MASSIVE QUANTITIES AND A GLASS OF WATER, SWEETHEART. MY SOCKS ARE ON FIRE.

Its called 대장금 Daejanggeum. I have no idea what the english title is though...

식객 (Le Grand Chef) is actually based off a comic series of the same name. If you understand Korean, def. pick it up! Much, much, better and more informative than the movie.

My all-time favorite food related soap opera is Shota no sushi!

Its called 대장금 Daejanggeum.

There's a Daejanggeum theme restaurant in Shin-Okubo in Tokyo that my husband and I go to - they do a killer modum kimchi plate. The DVDs play in the background for the whole meal - which you can hardly hear for all the businessmen shouting toasts over their Jinro.

I'd say "Old Boy", but it might hurt my avatar's feelings.

Not sure if this really qualifies for a food flick, but years ago I really enjoyed "Chicken and Duck Talk" (not sure what it is in characters) - a Hong Kong comedy by Michael Hui about a run-down roast duck shop. Has anyone else seen this?

I'll have to look for this one.

Plus, it made me remember Stephen Chow's The God of Cooking (like you, I have no idea what the characters are). I only have a VCD for that. I'll have to hunt down a DVD and watch it again for the Shaolin cooking scenes.

I love Chicken and Duck Talk! They used to repeat it quite often on SBS (Australia) back in the mid-90s. I particularly love the running joke about the Buddhist monk who visits the protagonists' shop to eat a meal of rice and vegetables. And any show about warring BBQ meat shops must qualify as a food flick, musn't it?

Peter, is The God of Cooking the one about the cooking contests where the women use their magic powers to cook award-winning dishes?

I was given a copy of the 1967 Branded To Kill awhile ago, but I 'd been waiting for Yoonhi to get back to watch it.

This was Seijun Suzuki's last film for Nikkatsu. They basically stated "your movies don't make sense, and they don't make money. You're fired."

There's a series of scenes in here where the lead, Jo Shishido (he of the chipmunk cheeks) will obsess over the smell of fresh steamed rice.

It's not really an eating film (although the shot of Jo plowing down a bowl of rice reminds me of my nephews when they were young....and my kids) but it does bring back that inexplicable smell of fresh rice as its cooking. Not jasmine or the others that are well known for their smell, but rather that very fresh, very thick and full smell of good rice finishing its transformation.

Sorry, I've gotta go and get some rice now.
