I give the lyric, you identify the artist and song

Recommended Posts

Well it was only a matter of time. . .

Below I will give ten lyric fragments from 1970's popular/rock songs (a few might be from the late 1960's) each has a reference to food and/or drink.

You reply with the appropriate artist(s) and song title.

We all feel good for remembering such a golden age of music, maybe pull out some vinyl, sip a fortified wine and crumble a stinky blue cheese, whatever gets you through the night, 'salright, 'salright (John Lennon, 1974) See how fun that was?

In increasing difficulty (for me anyways):

1.“Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals, I get my back into my living”

2."And in the master's chambers, They're gathered for the feast, They stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast"

3.“But there ain't no Coupe de Ville, Hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box”

4.“He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea. I had another look and I had a cup of tea and a butter pie.”

5.“Spent my days with a woman unkind, Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine”

6.“Creme tangerine and montelimat, A ginger sling with a pineapple heart”

7."We're gonna bring a case of wine, Hey, let's go mess and fool around,

You know, like we used to"

8.“I had a job in the great north woods, Working as a cook for a spell

But I never did like it all that much, And one day the ax just fell”

9.“So we bought a pack of cigarettes, And Mrs. Wagner's pies”

10."I got some groceries, some peanut butter,

to last a couple of days, But I ain't got no speakers, Ain't got no

headphones, Ain't got no records to play"

Bring it on!

I can't answer all of them, but here are the ones I know:

1. Teenage Wasteland, The Who

2. Hotel California, The Eagles

5. Going to California, Led Zeppelin

6. Savoy Truffle, The Beatles

8. Tangled Up in Blue, Bob Dylan

Can you tell I'm obsessed with 70s rock? And I'm only 21

ETA: I looked up the ones I didn't know, and I'm so annoyed I didn't recognize #7! :hmmm:

Well done!

I'll accept no.1 although, strictly speaking, it should be Baba O'Riley from 1971. Since you apparently weren't born for another decade and a half we'll let it go (I was five years old)

You joined eGullet in like grade ten? Good for you.

3.  "Two out of Three Ain't Bad," Meatloaf

4.  Some really awful song by Paul McCartney and Wings ..Admiral Halsley, maybe?

Right on!

“Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey”, 1971

I agree that is not one of Sir Paul's best. Strangely it just came to me as thought of starting the thread - as did no.6.

Number 7 is "There Goes my Girl" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?

Not sure.

How about:

"don't care what it looks like,

burned underdone crude,

don't care what the cook's like,

just thinking of growing fat,

our senses go reeling,

one moment of knowing that,

full up FEELING"

#7 Miss You

Rolling Stones

Spot on!

And it was 1978 from Some Girls Doesn't get much better.

So its not been an hour and nine of ten are solved - you people are good.

Hint for no.10:

Ironically not from their other album "More Songs About Building and Food"

And that's all ten solved!

Well that was clearly too easy.

I'll need to be more cryptic and rarefied next time.

2."And in the master's chambers, They're gathered for the feast, They stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast"

No way this is a song about food and drink. It is hard to imagine that it made it to this game...

Ooooh, now we're getting somewhere.

A feast, with a beast and a steely knife. What do you think? Is it Ozzy's Mr. Crowley? Non-specific hedonism?

Maybe they were preparing a pig or goat for roasting? That line would describe a pre-fiesta scene in my barrio neighborhood in the Philippines.

That specific passage refers to injectable drug usage. The song aas a whole is about addiction and substance abuse.

I remember looking up that theory awhile ago and the Eagles said it is NOT about Drug use per se, here is the web that I found the info on with a quote from Don Henley

Yeah, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds wasn't about an LSD trip either. (yeah yeah I know about the drawing his kid did. puleez. )

New Lyrics:

How come you're always such a fussy young man

Don't want no Captain Crunch, don't want no Raisin Bran

Well, don't you know that other kids are starving in Japan

way too easy I know, but it has to be the BEST song about food, EVAR!

Here's some more to try on for size...

1 - Her brother was on the sofa eatin chocolate pie

Her momma was in the kitchen cuttin' chicken up to fry

2 - You are my candy girl, and you got me wantin' you

3 - There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

4 - So after a lot of thought, I'd like to reconsider. Please, If it's not too late, make it a cheeseburger

5 - I was chasing the black girl with the Oysters Rockefeller

6 - Eggs ain't poultry, grits ain't groceries, and Mona Lisa was a man

7 - ...sucking down quarter pounder cheese burgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam container...

8 - Get you one of those greasebombs all peppered up, put you in the hospital for 10 days (This is quite obscure. Anyone gets this one, I'll have to make you the winner of the internet.)

9 - Boy grows up, he eats the enchilada, with the sauce that burns the heart (Even more obscure than #8, this was even a hidden track)

10 - Across the street, a neon sign, all you can eat for a dollar ninety nine - That old stew is the baddest in the land, but one dollars worth was all that I could stand

Screw it. It's a Butterball.
