Road food...

In less than 48 hours, I'm going to be pulling out of Edmonton and pointing my car east. I'm heading to New Brunswick to open a restaurant (yay!), and I'm going to be driving so that I can take my things with me instead of shipping them.

I'm going to be crossing from Ottawa, and probably follow the southern route through Quebec to the New Brunswick border, and then the #2 down to Saint John. Seeking the wisdom of the assembled multitudes, then, my question is this: are there any roadside places along the way that merit a stop? I'm not looking to delve into a strange city in search of a meal, however excellent; I want to know where the good roadside diners and truck stops are. Y'know...good, simple, filling food.

Any suggestions?

Once you hit the NB border, look for the Irving Big Stops, sometimes also called the Mainway. Truckers food but generally not bad, depending on the operator.

If you're on highway 20 going through Montreal, when you get to Ile Perrot, stop at Smoke Meat Pete's for a great smoked meat sandwich and awesome fries. They're on the corner of hwy 20 and Perrot boulevard on the left hand side... there's a stoplight there. Oh, and you have to order at the counter before you sit!

^^ was JUST going to post that very same thing. You don't even have to get off the highway. Seems like a logical first stop in Quebec.

When you hit Quebec city, and take the bridge Pierre-Laporte, take the Highway 20 West. Take the the first exit named "St-Redempteur/St-Nicolas", turn right, and in front of you will be Ashton. Get a poutine there....it's one of the best ones....

Actually, if he's driving on highway 20 from Montreal he doesn't have to cross the Pierre-Laporte bridge, he'll already be on the south shore. Also, I really don't get all the admiration that Quebec City's people have for Ashton, a chain average at best poutine. Might as well stop at Jucep on the main strip in Drummondville where the thing was supposedly invented. Or better yet, take the Cartier exit when in Rivière-du-Loup and turn right and drive on Cartier to Snack-Bar d'Amours, now we're talking poutine.
