  1. My mom always saved them, too. She used them on her supply of re-used supermarket produce bags.

    Bisquick

My mom was a Bisquick Queen, too. To this day I cannot eat anyone else's cobbler having grown up eating her Bisquick-topped peach cobbler. I won't offer anyone apolgies for using it myself. There are some dishes that just aren't the same without using Bisquick. Her biscuit cutter had a red-painted wooden knob. She'd make the Bisquick biscuits and then invert the cutter, pressing the knob into the biscuit, making a little valley in the center which she would fill with apricot preserves (for her and my dad) or grape jelly (for us kids). Those Bisquick biscuits with jelly in the center would make Soup Night bearable for us kids.
  3. With "Shrek the Third" coming out soon, I am nibbling on some "Ogre-sized, Swamped with Peanut Butter" Peanut Butter M&M's. They've added a lovely Shrek green to the brown and orange colors of candy in the bag. I think I'm addicted.
  4. New clues have been added to some movies: Please don't assign numbers to your new movie foods...if a movie is solved before it gets put into a recap, it's not given a number since it's out of play. Also, we're getting some repeat movies. Try not to use "Pretty Woman", "The Godfather", "Cool Hand Luke", "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", "Fargo", "Moonstruck", "Repo Man", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "Dirty Dancing" as they've all been used twice. CONGRATULATIONS TO: -petite tête de chou for guessing that #182 (A whole odd-looking roasted river fish paraded among dinner party guests before being placed on the table CLUE: The fish is probably from the Amazon river...) is the film "Fitzcarroldo". -viva for guessing that #183 (quote [more or less] 'What kind of a man does not eat a hot dog') is the film "S.W.A.T." ************ WAITING FOR CONFIRMATION: -petite tête de chou has guessed that #174 (Raw corn, bananas, scenery CLUE: The actor won't eat the banana, but does chew the scenery) could be "WarGames". #154 is not "The Notebook" nor is it "Jamon, Jamon" #174 is not "1492 - Conquest of Paradise" ************ STILL UNSOLVED AND TAUNTING US: 154. REVISED CLUE: A floor picnic of roast chicken, rudely interrupted by monetary concerns and time constraints. CLUE: Every meal in the movie was disrupted by SOMETHING, but no other by money. CLUE: The hero speaks to an older woman, and her comeback was quite memorable. CLUE: The lady came to the hero's place of work in order to watch him. No food was visible at the moment, though the aura of ham was present. 158. "I love their eggrolls" " Eat your eggs" and four perfect T-bone steaks 173. Jack Nicholson film: features a lot of barbequeing (as I recall) 174. Raw corn, bananas, scenery CLUE: The actor won't eat the banana, but does chew the scenery. 177. I hid behind the car. 5. Get 'em while you can. The city of San Francisco has banned (or is in the process of banning) plastic grocery bags. There's a local idiot who is also trying to push the same ban through here. I end up either recycling my leftover grocery bags or re-use them to carry in my haul from Costco (since Costco is too cheap to provide plastic bags for their customers ). When I visit my mom and we go grocery shopping, I'll snag extra twist ties for her. No harm, no foul.

  8. McDonald's is opening McCafés...their answer to Starbuck's. Here's the official website: McCafé website You can see listings for Dublin locations on the web page. I read a recent article that said they will be debuting in the U.S. shortly, if they haven't already. Given that McDonald's coffee has been rated very highly, do you think they will make an impact in the coffee house market?

  10. It seems that the freeze has done wonders for roses. Every rose bush in my mom's neighborhood is bursting with blossoms and the neighbors are a-twitter over the blossom bonanza. So some good has come from the bad... As for my mom's tomatoes, it turns out that the third plant didn't take, leaving her with just two plants in pots. One plant (don't know what type it is) has fruit but seems to be stunted. It just isn't getting any bigger so it may be a loss if it doesn't show signs of improvement. My brother will be planting two more for her soon, one being a cherry or grape (she hasn't decided which, yet). But the one tomato plant that is going like gang-busters is the "Whopper". It's already about two-thirds as tall as a fully grown normal tomato plant. I am in awe and almost alarmed by it's thickness. Just looking at it you get a feeling of strength and vitality. The fruit it grows must be huge. Or at least I hope so...
  11. I thought I would keep a can of Diet Pepsi before they made the switch to NutraSweet/aspartame and found out the hard way that the seal on the pop top doesn't last forever. I tried hording Ore Ida Potato Triangles for awhile. They were like Tater Tots, except large and in a triangular shape. They rocked. You can horde for only so long until Freezer Burn becomes a concern. Oh, and those spices in my cupboard aren't old. I'm hanging on to them because they don't come in a can anymore and I'm collecting the tins. Yeah, that's it.
  12. The game seems to be at a standstill. If you've posted a movie that remains unsolved, consider adding more clues.
  13. I am currently snacking on some homemade beef jerky sold by a fellow employee. I buy his extra spicy hot jerky. Being a chilehead, I originally gave him grief over his weak attempts at spiciness. So he's been slowly cranking up the heat level with each new batch. It's odd but when I first started nibbling on this batch, I thought he may have reached the right plateau. But I've discovered I'm becoming inured to the heat again. And so goes the life of a chilehead...
  14. There used to be "partner" links to Amazon and Jessica's Biscuit but I can't seem to find them. Here is an eGullet-friendly link to one of the Staub items for sale: Staub Coq Au Vin 6-Quart Cocotte, Eggplant I believe once you get there using this type of link, eGullet does get a little something when you make a purchase. Perhaps a host will weigh in shortly with a proper answer for this question.

  16. CHA-CHING! That out-of-print cookbook is going for huge $$$ these days. Congratulations!
  17. Marsha (zilla369) did her foodblog during Kentucky Derby Week. There may be some useful info in it: "Foodblog: zilla369, Derby Eats, Derby Week: Louisville, KY" And a releated discussion of some Derby fare: "Kentucky Derby Party, What's Everone Making?" You could also add a British dish for fun since the Queen will be attending the Kentucky Derby this year.

  19. Nibbling on some leftover Dove Dark Chocolate foil-covered Easter "eggs" that someone in the office brought in this morning. How anyone can have leftover chocolate is beyond me.
  20. McDonald's expands on their coffee beverages: "McDonald's Winds Up for Iced-Coffee Pitch" It's a free article from the Wall Street Journal online. Don't know how long the link will be active... From the article: Have you tried them? Are the drinks good enough to make Mickey-D's an iced-coffee destination?
  21. Is this the discussion you were looking for? "Finding the best Chocolate Cake recipe, do you want to participate?" All of the "Finding the best..." discussions used to be pinned to the top of the Baking & Pastry forum. I guess since the site overhaul there hasn't been time to dedicate to re-pinning them...
  22. Has anyone tried Jack-in-the-Box's new breakfast biscuit sandwiches? They're huge. The bicuits are of the soft "fluffy" variety as opposed to the flakey kind. I think I prefer them over McDonald's breakfast biscuit sandwiches. And it doesn't hurt that they're currently having a "two for two dollars" special in my area.
  23. Gosh, I have no idea. I am a dunce when it comes to anything scientific ! Maybe someone else can explain??? Kim ← Found this Googling...it's from Rose Levy Beranbaum's website...it may apply to cupcakes, too: "Why Cakes Dome." ← Okkkk! Got it. I will try and see how it works. I have the strips but for the cup cake with strips around all of them sounds impossible. So i will try adding more leavening, The idea is totally on the opposite from what i thought. Ignorant me, i thought adding leavening will make it dome higher, but Rose says it will lower the dome! Thank you very much indeed. iii ← If that doesn't work, one of the other solutions she offered was to add an extra ounce of butter. Or, as sanrensho suggested, try Rose's Yellowcake recipe.

    Dinner! 2007

Last night it was almost too hot here to turn on the oven but there was a head of cauliflower in the refrigerator calling my name. So for dinner it was the infamous roasted cauliflower along with pan-fried cumin-dusted pork chops and a simple green salad for dinner. I had to restrain myself from eating all of the roasted cauliflower.
